PostgreSQL 18 and MySQL 8.4 with InnoDB both use MVCC, but store and clean up row history differently. PostgreSQL is a complete database server; InnoDB is a storage engine within MySQL. Those architectural choices affect recovery, memory use, and maintenance—not which system is faster for every workload. Choose by testing the transaction semantics, data, and operating conditions your application actually needs.

PostgreSQL vs MySQL architecture: compare the right layers

This comparison uses PostgreSQL 18 and MySQL 8.4 with InnoDB, based on their documentation available on October 5, 2026. PostgreSQL’s architectural overview describes its client/server model; MySQL’s server layer can work with different storage engines, and InnoDB is the transactional engine relevant here. “PostgreSQL versus InnoDB” is therefore shorthand for comparing PostgreSQL’s database path with MySQL’s InnoDB-backed path—not two equivalent products or every MySQL engine.

The distinction matters operationally: some behavior and controls belong to the MySQL server layer, while storage, transaction, and recovery details can depend on the engine. The [PostgreSQL 18 architecture overview](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/tutorial-arch.html) and [MySQL 8.4 InnoDB architecture guide](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.4/en/innodb-architecture.html) describe those respective boundaries.

Area PostgreSQL 18 MySQL 8.4 with InnoDB
Product boundary Database server architecture MySQL server with a pluggable storage-engine layer; InnoDB is the engine in this comparison
MVCC history Row versions reside in table storage; routine vacuuming reclaims obsolete tuples Undo information supports rollback and older consistent-read versions; purge removes history no longer needed
Recovery log Write-ahead log (WAL) records changes before affected data pages are written Redo log supports crash recovery; undo logs serve rollback and version-history functions
Memory focus Shared buffers plus the operating-system cache and background write behavior InnoDB buffer pool for table and index pages, alongside other in-memory structures
Documented default isolation Read Committed Repeatable Read

How PostgreSQL MVCC differs from InnoDB MVCC

Multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) lets a transaction read an appropriate version of a row while other transactions make changes. PostgreSQL stores row versions in the table itself. InnoDB uses undo information to reconstruct older versions for consistent reads. Both approaches support concurrent reads and writes, but their version storage and cleanup work differ.

PostgreSQL’s documentation puts the ordinary case this way: “The main advantage of using the MVCC model of concurrency control rather than locking is that in MVCC locks acquired for querying (reading) data do not conflict with locks acquired for writing data, and so reading never blocks writing and writing never blocks reading.” This is not a promise that databases are lock-free: explicit locks exist, and particular transactions can conflict. PostgreSQL’s [Introduction to MVCC](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/mvcc-intro.html) also describes Serializable Snapshot Isolation, which can reject transactions that applications then need to retry.

What this means for cleanup

PostgreSQL’s routine vacuuming makes space from obsolete tuple versions reusable, helps protect against transaction-ID wraparound, and works alongside analyze to maintain planner statistics. A long-lived snapshot can hold back cleanup. InnoDB purge removes obsolete undo history once it is no longer required. These are not interchangeable operations: one reclaims obsolete tuples in table storage, while the other cleans up undo history.

For frequently updated or deleted data, monitor table and index growth, cleanup lag, transaction age, and how maintenance relates to latency. The [PostgreSQL vacuuming guide](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/routine-vacuuming.html) and [InnoDB multi-versioning documentation](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.4/en/innodb-multi-versioning.html) explain the different mechanisms.

Durability, recovery, and the role of logs

PostgreSQL uses write-ahead logging: the log records describing a change must be flushed before the affected data-file changes are written. WAL supports crash recovery and, with archived logs, point-in-time recovery. It is a record of changes needed for recovery and replication, not simply a second copy of the database files. The [PostgreSQL WAL introduction](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/16/wal-intro.html) describes this mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

InnoDB separates two jobs. Its redo log supports recovery after a crash; undo logs support rollback and reconstruction of earlier row versions for consistent reads. PostgreSQL also supports rollback semantics, so the useful comparison is not “redo versus no undo,” but how each system combines recovery logging with transaction history. See the MySQL 8.4 documentation for [redo logs](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.4/en/innodb-redo-log.html) and [undo logs](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.4/en/innodb-undo-logs.html).

Memory, storage, and I/O: what to measure

InnoDB’s buffer pool caches table and index pages and is a major memory-allocation and tuning surface. PostgreSQL cache analysis should account for shared buffers together with the operating-system file cache, WAL generation and flushing, and checkpoint and background-writer behavior. Comparing one buffer-pool setting with one PostgreSQL setting does not establish which system will serve a workload with less I/O.

Instead, test both systems with the same data, memory budget, storage, and workload, and record:

  • Whether the working set fits in RAM and how cache hit behavior changes as it grows.
  • Random and sequential reads against the storage’s latency and IOPS.
  • Write rate, log volume, durability and flush settings, and the effects of dirty-page flushing on tail latency.
  • Index maintenance, update frequency, and the impact of tuple or undo-history cleanup.
  • Concurrency, lock waits, transaction duration, and contention on hot rows.

The [InnoDB buffer-pool guide](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.4/en/innodb-buffer-pool.html) describes that cache; PostgreSQL’s [architecture overview](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/tutorial-arch.html) and WAL documentation cover parts of its memory and write path.

Isolation levels and application behavior

PostgreSQL 18 documents Read Committed as its default isolation level; MySQL 8.4 InnoDB documents Repeatable Read as its default. The names alone do not guarantee identical results across systems. Compare when each transaction sees a snapshot, what locking reads do, how range reads and phantoms behave, and whether serializable execution can fail and require a retry.

Before choosing an engine or migrating, exercise the application’s real transaction boundaries. Confirm that retry logic handles serialization failures where applicable, deadlock handling is in place for lock-based code, and long transactions do not create unacceptable cleanup pressure. Consult the version-specific [PostgreSQL isolation documentation](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/transaction-iso.html) and [MySQL 8.4 isolation documentation](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.4/en/innodb-transaction-isolation-levels.html).

Replication and availability are deployment choices

PostgreSQL documents high availability, load balancing, streaming replication, and logical replication. MySQL documentation covers replication and related clustered options. Feature names alone do not establish equivalent failover behavior or prove either architecture fits a particular service.

Evaluate the actual release and deployment for synchronous versus asynchronous replication, lag, failover orchestration, recovery objectives, consistency requirements, read scaling, write scaling, and operational tooling. PostgreSQL’s [high-availability and replication guide](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/18/high-availability.html) is a starting point for its options; design and test the failure path you intend to operate.

Which database fits your workload?

Architecture narrows the questions to test; it does not establish a universal performance winner. No comparative benchmark result is established here. Build a representative prototype using the same schema, data volume, hardware, durability expectations, and application behavior on both systems.

  • Transactional workloads: vary transaction duration, contention, index shape, read/write mix, durability settings, and concurrency.
  • Update-heavy workloads: track cleanup behavior, storage growth, write amplification, and latency under maintenance pressure.
  • Read-heavy workloads: establish how much of the working set fits in memory, then measure cache behavior and storage latency.
  • Reporting or mixed analytical queries: compare query plans, statistics, indexing, and the effect of concurrent transactions.
  • High-availability systems: test recovery, failover, and data-loss or recovery-time objectives rather than comparing feature lists.

Record p50, p95, and p99 latency, throughput, resource use, storage growth, and the operational work needed to sustain the test. The result should reflect the team’s real query mix and deployment—not an isolated engine feature or a benchmark run under different conditions.

Conclusion

PostgreSQL 18 and MySQL 8.4 with InnoDB make different architectural trade-offs in row-version storage, cleanup, memory, and transaction defaults. Use those differences to shape a workload-specific evaluation, then choose the system whose measured behavior, recovery design, and operating demands fit your application.
