For a Windows system drive on a computer booted in UEFI mode, choose GPT. MBR is mainly useful when you need compatibility with legacy BIOS booting. GPT also supports disks larger than 2 TB and more partitions, while the right choice for a data drive depends on its size, operating-system support, and partition layout. Back up important data before changing a disk’s partition style.

GPT vs. MBR at a glance

Feature MBR GPT
Windows boot mode Legacy BIOS compatibility UEFI boot for supported Windows installations
Disk capacity Microsoft describes MBR as limited to disks of 2 TB or smaller Supports disks larger than 2 TB; Windows documentation gives an 18-exabyte maximum partition size
Partitions Up to four primary partitions Up to 128 partitions on a Windows basic disk
Partition metadata No equivalent replicated-table and CRC feature is described in the Microsoft comparison sources Replicated partition information and CRC protection

These figures are from Microsoft’s Windows documentation: disk-style conversion guidance, UEFI/GPT partition guidance, and basic and dynamic disk documentation. The 18-exabyte figure is a documented maximum, not a typical consumer-drive capacity.

Which partition style should you choose?

Choose GPT for a Windows system drive booted in UEFI mode

Windows installed on a UEFI-based device requires GPT for the disk that contains Windows. Match the disk style to the firmware mode used to boot both the installer and the operating system. Microsoft outlines the UEFI/GPT relationship in its Windows deployment guidance.

Choose MBR only when legacy BIOS compatibility is required

MBR can be appropriate for a system that must boot through legacy BIOS compatibility. Whether a computer supports legacy boot, UEFI, or both depends on its firmware and configuration; consult the device maker’s documentation before changing boot settings.

For a data drive, consider capacity and partition needs

A data disk does not have the same Windows boot-mode requirement as a Windows system disk. GPT is the practical choice for a drive larger than 2 TB or when you need more than four primary partitions. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes MBR’s limit as 2 TB or smaller and GPT’s Windows basic-disk limit as 128 partitions.

What the capacity and partition limits mean

MBR and the 2 TB ceiling

Microsoft attributes MBR’s roughly 2 TB limit to its 32-bit addressing. On a larger drive, an MBR layout can leave capacity beyond the supported limit inaccessible. Exact usable capacity depends on addressing and sector conventions; see Microsoft’s explanation of Windows support for hard disks exceeding 2 TB.

GPT’s larger theoretical maximum

Microsoft’s Windows deployment documentation gives GPT partitions a maximum size of 18 exabytes. That is a documented theoretical maximum, not a claim that consumer computers or operating systems support drives of that size. Actual support depends on the platform and operating system.

Four MBR primary partitions versus 128 GPT partitions

MBR supports up to four primary partitions. Extended and logical partitions can provide another arrangement, but GPT is more straightforward if you need more than four primary partitions. Windows supports up to 128 partitions on a basic GPT disk.

Does GPT protect data better?

GPT stores replicated partition information and uses CRC protection to help detect corruption in its partition metadata, as Microsoft explains in its basic and dynamic disk documentation. This is a partition-table resilience feature, not a backup and not protection against drive failure, accidental deletion, or every kind of data loss. Keep separate backups of files you cannot afford to lose.

Why Windows Setup says the selected disk is not GPT

This message can appear when Windows Setup is booted in UEFI mode but the target disk uses MBR. Microsoft documents that mismatch and describes switching to legacy BIOS compatibility or configuring the disk for UEFI with GPT as options. The right fix depends on the computer’s supported boot modes and the intended installation; see Microsoft’s Windows Setup instructions for MBR and GPT.

Can you convert MBR to GPT without losing data?

For a qualifying Windows system disk: MBR2GPT

Microsoft’s MBR2GPT documentation says the utility converts an MBR disk to GPT without modifying or deleting the disk’s data. It is intended for Windows system disks, not arbitrary data drives, and conversion is conditional on meeting its layout prerequisites. Microsoft requires no more than three primary MBR partitions and no extended or logical partition, among other validation requirements. After conversion, the device must boot in UEFI mode; confirm that it supports UEFI before proceeding.

For other disks: the standard Windows conversion workflow is destructive

Microsoft’s standard Disk Management conversion process requires that the disk contain no partitions or volumes. Removing them erases access to the stored data, so copy anything you need to another location and verify the backup before conversion. Follow Microsoft’s disk partition-style conversion guidance for the applicable Windows version.

How to decide safely

  1. Identify the disk’s role. Determine whether it contains Windows, will be used only for data, or is part of another boot configuration.
  2. Check boot mode and hardware support. For Windows on a UEFI-based device, use GPT. If you need legacy BIOS boot, check the computer maker’s documentation for supported modes.
  3. Check size and partition requirements. Prefer GPT for a drive over 2 TB or when you need more than four primary partitions.
  4. Confirm conversion eligibility and data impact. Use MBR2GPT only for an eligible Windows system disk; the ordinary Windows workflow requires an empty disk.
  5. Back up important files before making changes. A conversion can make data inaccessible if the wrong method or disk is selected, even when a specific utility is designed to preserve data.
