Learning system design does not require abandoning coding. It means briefly shifting focus from writing a component to tracing how a request moves through the whole product—and what happens when part of that path slows down or fails. In a first-person DEV Community article, Musah Congo Adama describes pausing feature work to develop that broader view. His experience is personal, but the exercise is useful for developers who want to understand how software components work together.

What it means to learn how systems think

Thinking in systems means looking beyond a function, service, or database in isolation. You follow the work from its starting point to its result, identify the components involved, and consider how each component affects the others.

Adama illustrates this with a short-link request. Rather than stopping at the code that resolves a link, trace the request through a load balancer, a cache, and a database. Ask what each part receives, what it returns, and what the next part does with that result. The goal is not to memorize a standard architecture; it is to understand the path a particular request takes.

Trace a request from start to finish

  1. Start with the requirement. Define what the product must do and what matters for this request. A short-link service, for example, needs to resolve a submitted link to its destination.
  2. Narrate the request. Follow it from the user-facing entry point through each component, such as the load balancer, cache, and database, to the response.
  3. Ask what happens next. At every handoff, identify what the component needs, what it might return, and how the next component responds.
  4. Introduce a failure or delay. Consider a cache failure, conflicting writes, or a slow service. Trace how the problem affects the request and other parts of the system.
  5. Explain the trade-offs. Say what a design choice improves, what it makes harder, and which requirement makes that trade-off worthwhile.
  6. Build and revisit the design. Implement something small, then compare the actual behavior with the system you expected. Redesign a familiar service to practise tracing flows without starting from a blank page.

Use failures to test whether you understand the design

A diagram of components is not enough if it only describes the happy path. A system-level view asks how a problem travels: if the cache fails, does the request go to the database? If writes conflict, which outcome is acceptable? If one service becomes slow, do requests pile up at upstream components?

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

These questions connect local failures to product behavior. A slow service, for example, can have consequences beyond its own response time if upstream requests keep waiting. The useful answer depends on the design and requirements; the exercise is to make the consequence explicit rather than assume every component will always respond promptly.

Choose technologies by their consequences

Adama uses SQL versus NoSQL, caching versus no caching, and synchronous versus asynchronous processing as examples of choices that depend on the situation—not as universal rankings.

Choice What the article’s framing emphasizes Question to ask
SQL or NoSQL Structure and guarantees versus flexibility and scaling Which requirements for data structure, guarantees, and scaling matter here?
Cache or no cache Speed versus the risk of stale data Is faster access worth managing the possibility that cached data is out of date?
Synchronous or asynchronous processing Simplicity versus resilience under surges Does this work need an immediate result, or should the design better absorb bursts?

These are prompts for reasoning, not complete rules for choosing a database or processing model. Start with the requirement, then describe the benefit and cost of each option in that context. As Adama puts it, “Learning to say ‘it depends, and here’s what it depends on’ turned out to be the real skill.”

Apply the same thinking to machine learning

A model is part of a product system, not the whole system. Adama’s article suggests considering its inputs and outputs, latency limits, monitoring, pipelines, and possible fallback behavior. That broader view helps frame practical questions: how does information reach the model, what does the product do with the result, and what should happen if the model is slow or unavailable?

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The article’s point is that a model’s surrounding system affects whether it works well in a product. A strong model alone does not describe the complete path from incoming data to a useful user-facing result.

Ways to keep learning without pausing product work indefinitely

  • Redesign a familiar service. Pick a product you know and trace one request through its likely components, including a failure case.
  • Build a small version. Use implementation to test whether your design assumptions hold, rather than treating diagrams as the final answer.
  • Explain choices aloud or in writing. State the requirement, the option chosen, and the cost accepted. If you cannot explain the trade-off, identify what you still need to understand.
  • Use AI as a challenger. Ask it to question assumptions or suggest failure scenarios, then evaluate those suggestions against the requirements. Treat its output as something to assess, not proof that a design is sound.

Adama names System Design Handbook: The Complete Guide as a resource that shaped his thinking. The article identifies a guide by that name but does not establish whether it is a physical book or confirm its availability.

What the first-person account does—and does not—establish

Adama says that stepping away from feature coding to focus on how systems fit together changed how he approached building products. That is his account of his own learning, not independent evidence that the same pause will produce the same result for every developer.

He also says he has products in hand and names academialync and mantroops as forthcoming. The article does not independently confirm their release or current availability.
