To reduce cookie-based tracking, block or partition third-party cookies in your browser, then clear cookies and site data already stored. This limits cross-site tracking through cookies; it does not make you anonymous or stop every kind of tracking, and some websites may not work as expected.
How cookies can track activity across websites
A cookie is data a website stores in your browser. It can help the site recognize your browser when you return. The FTC’s explanation of internet cookies describes this basic function.
Cross-site tracking can happen when a third party—such as an advertising or analytics service—has content embedded on multiple websites and uses cookies to recognize the same browser on each. MDN’s guide to third-party cookies explains how this differs from cookies used by the site you are visiting.
Block or limit third-party cookies
Start with your browser’s privacy or cookie controls. Blocking third-party cookies, or using a browser feature that partitions them by site, is the main browser-level step for limiting cookie-based cross-site tracking. Settings and defaults vary by browser, device, and version.

Chrome
On Chrome desktop, open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies. The available controls include blocking third-party cookies; Chrome also blocks them by default in Incognito mode. Menu labels and options can differ on mobile or change with updates. See Chrome’s cookie settings help for current details.
Firefox
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection includes Total Cookie Protection, which keeps third-party cookies in a site-specific cookie jar rather than allowing them to be shared across sites. Firefox also provides protection levels and options for clearing cookies and site data for individual sites. Clear cookies already stored
Blocking or partitioning cookies limits how they can be used going forward; clearing site data removes cookies and other stored data already on your device. In Chrome, use Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies to reach the cookie controls and find the option to delete browsing data. Review the time range and selected data types before confirming, since clearing site data can sign you out or remove site preferences. Refer to Chrome’s cookie settings help for the current steps.
Deletion is not a lasting opt-out: a site can create new cookies the next time you visit. Pair clearing with a browser protection setting if you want to limit future third-party cookie tracking.

Allow an exception if a site stops working
Cookie blocking can interfere with features that rely on cookies, such as sign-in or embedded content. If a trusted site stops working, try allowing cookies for that site through your browser’s site-specific exception controls rather than disabling protection everywhere. Chrome documents exceptions and notes that some sites may not work as expected when cookies are blocked; see its cookie settings help.
Do private browsing and Do Not Track stop tracking?
Private browsing is not anonymity
Private browsing can limit what is saved in the local browser after a session, but it does not prevent websites from seeing your online activity. Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito mode, but that setting alone does not make you anonymous. The FTC’s guidance on how websites and apps collect and use information explains the limits of private browsing.

Do Not Track is only a request
Do Not Track sends a preference signal; it does not technically block cookies or force a website to honor the request. Google Chrome Help says, “Most websites and web services, including Google’s, don’t change their behavior when they receive a Do Not Track request.” You can enable the setting if you want to send the signal, but do not rely on it as a tracking barrier. Cookie controls address tracking that depends on cookies, especially cross-site tracking through third-party cookies. They do not prevent every way a site or service might recognize or track a browser. Browser fingerprinting and other techniques are separate privacy concerns discussed in MDN’s privacy guide and Mozilla’s overview of Firefox protections. No percentage reduction in tracking can be inferred from enabling a cookie setting alone.
