The excerpt also says the author recommends the BOOX Go 10.3 for ebooks. It does not reveal the complete three-tablet lineup or enough of the comparison to verify which model won overall or why. The practical answer is to choose by display technology and primary use—not by assuming the headline establishes a universal winner.
What “paper-like” means on an Android tablet
“Paper-like” is a description, not a single display technology. A matte LCD can reduce reflections and soften the screen’s glossy appearance while retaining the color and responsiveness associated with conventional tablet use. E Ink is a different display technology, commonly chosen for a reading- and writing-focused experience.
The distinction is explicit in WIRED’s review of the TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER: it is a matte LCD, not E Ink. WIRED found it useful for ebooks and video, but said its writing feel does not match E Ink’s paper-like texture. These observations concern the Note A1, not the similarly named TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER.

This is a use-case comparison, not a measured head-to-head test. The sources do not establish comparative glare, battery life, writing latency, or overall performance for the three tablets in the headline.
What the named devices actually establish
TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER
TCL advertises anti-glare features, adjustable refresh rates up to 120 Hz, 16.7 million colors, and a T-Pen Pro with 8,192 pressure levels and latency under 5 ms on the Note A1 product page. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative measurements. WIRED rated the Note A1 6/10, praising its matte high-resolution display, pen, handwriting conversion, ebook reading, and video use. The review also criticized its interface, bulky keyboard case, lack of hardware volume buttons, and writing feel relative to E Ink.

BOOX Note Air4 C

TCL TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER
The Yahoo Tech excerpt names the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER as a review sample but does not disclose its specifications or enough of the test to confirm its position in the ranking. Do not transfer the Note A1’s specifications, WIRED review findings, or T-Pen Pro details to the TAB A1 Plus just because their names are similar. The available material also does not establish whether a pen is included with, compatible with, or sold separately for the TAB A1 Plus.

How to choose without relying on the headline
- For video, color, and general tablet use: look for a matte LCD model if those capabilities matter more to you than an E Ink writing texture. The Note A1 is an example of this category, but its review is not a verdict on the TAB A1 Plus.
- For an ebook- and writing-led device: consider E Ink models, and check reviews of the exact model you plan to buy. The Yahoo Tech excerpt’s ebook recommendation is for the BOOX Go 10.3; the available evidence does not provide enough information to compare that model with the Note Air4 C.
- Before buying a TCL model: verify the exact product name and regional configuration on the listing. TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER and Note A1 NXTPAPER are distinct model names, and the cited Note A1 specifications cannot confirm what comes with the TAB A1 Plus.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about the “winner”
The Yahoo Tech headline supports the narrow claim that its comparison names a non-E Ink winner. The visible excerpt identifies the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER as a sample and separately recommends the BOOX Go 10.3 for ebooks, but it does not establish the winner’s identity or the basis for an overall ranking. Treat that headline as the comparison’s framing, not proof that a non-E Ink tablet is best for every reader or writer. The more useful conclusion is conditional: choose matte LCD for a broader color-and-video experience; choose E Ink when its reading and writing character is the priority, and compare the exact models rather than their category labels.
