For most production React applications, stream schema-constrained data and render it with application-owned components; use AI SDK RSC’s streamUI only when its experimental status and constraints fit your use case. These are related but distinct approaches: one streams partial structured data, while the other lets a model choose tools whose server-side generators return React components. In either design, the model proposes data or an operation; your application owns validation, component selection, and interactive behavior.
Choose the contract before choosing the rendering pattern
Generative UI is not a single transport or API. Decide what the model is allowed to produce and what trusted application code will do with it. The key distinction is whether the stream carries schema-defined data, tool-call state, or rendered UI.
| Approach | Model output and contract | Rendering boundary | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structured-data streaming | Partial values for an application-defined schema, such as a JSON object | Your components render the received data | Interfaces with a finite set of known views and props, especially when you want to inspect or validate data before rendering |
AI SDK RSC streamUI |
Model-selected tool calls; each tool has an input schema and a generator that returns a React component | The server streams React components, including possible intermediate loading components | Experimental flows where a model-selected tool naturally corresponds to a server-rendered component |
Neither a schema-valid object nor a tool call is permission to execute arbitrary model-authored JSX. Treat generated values as input: validate them, map allowed operations to application code, and render only components your application has chosen to expose. This boundary follows from how the AI SDK’s structured output and component-streaming APIs work alongside React’s separate server and client environments.
How to stream schema-defined data into a React UI
Define a narrow data contract
With AI SDK Core, streamText and Output.object can generate schema-constrained structured output and stream partial values. The documented schema options include Zod, Valibot, and JSON Schema. Keep the contract limited to the fields and states the interface needs; the schema defines shape, not whether every value is true, safe, or complete. The AI SDK explicitly advises developers to supply schemas and validate output because models can produce incorrect or incomplete data: Generating Structured Data.

Separate a preview from a committed action
Partial output is useful for progressive display, but it may be unfinished. Let the UI show provisional content where that is appropriate, and gate consequential actions—such as submitting, saving, or triggering a workflow—on a complete value that passes application validation. Validate semantic constraints the schema cannot express, too. For example, a structurally valid date or identifier may still be invalid for the user’s current task.
Render from a finite component set
Translate validated data into known application components rather than allowing output to name or construct arbitrary components. Keep interactive controls in client-rendered components, with their state and event handling owned by the application. This keeps the model’s role at the data or operation boundary and leaves behavior under explicit code control.

When AI SDK RSC streamUI fits
The AI SDK RSC API lets you give the model tools with a description, input schema, and generate function that returns a React component. A generator can yield a loading component before returning the completed one. The flow also needs a text handler that maps ordinary model text to a React component. See the Streaming React Components documentation for the API shape.
This is component streaming, not simply JSON streaming with a different renderer. The model selects among the tools you expose; application code implements each generator and defines which component it returns. Use input schemas and application-side checks to constrain tool inputs, and keep the available tool/component set finite.

Keep React Server and Client Component responsibilities explicit
React defines Server Components as components that render ahead of time in an environment separate from the client application or SSR server. They can read server-side data, and their original component implementations are not sent to the browser. They cannot use interactive APIs such as useState directly. Put interactive controls and state in Client Components marked with use client, and compose them with server-rendered output where needed. See React’s Server Components reference.
There is an important version distinction: React says Server Components in React 19 are stable, while the underlying APIs that bundlers and frameworks use to implement them may change between React 19 minor versions. Check the compatibility of your React, framework, and bundler versions rather than treating the feature as either universally unstable or implementation-independent.

Production trade-offs in AI SDK RSC
As of the AI SDK documentation inspected on October 5, 2026, RSC is labeled experimental, and the streaming-components page recommends AI SDK UI for production. The migration guide gives concrete reasons for that recommendation:
- Server-action streams cannot be aborted.
- Components can remount and flicker when generation completes.
- Numerous Suspense boundaries can cause crashes.
createStreamableUIcan cause quadratic transfer growth.- Updating a closed stream can cause problems.
streamUIdoes not directly support the parallel and multi-step tool-call patterns described for AI SDK UI.
These are operational constraints to evaluate against the interaction you intend to build, not a claim that every RSC application will encounter every issue. The migration guide recommends AI SDK UI for stable production use: Migrating from RSC to UI.

A production-oriented alternative: stream in a route handler
The documented migration path separates model streaming from client rendering: run streamText in a route handler, produce a UI message stream, and consume it in the client with useChat. AI SDK UI also documents built-in support for parallel and multi-step tool calls, patterns the migration guide says RSC streamUI does not support directly. This separation is a practical default when cancellation, client-side chat state, or those tool-call patterns matter. It does not remove the need to validate model output or define which operations and UI states the client may render.
Quick Recap
Make the choice against your requirements
- Choose structured-data streaming when the UI can be expressed as known components populated by constrained data, and you want the application to own the data-to-component mapping.
- Consider RSC
streamUIfor experimentation or a specific server-component streaming use case where its experimental status, cancellation behavior, remounting, transfer costs, Suspense limits, and tool-call constraints are acceptable. - Check the framework boundary when using Server Components: React, framework, and bundler support must align because implementation APIs may shift between React 19 minor versions.
- Keep validation in the application whichever route you choose. Schema conformance is a useful contract, not a guarantee of semantic correctness, completeness, or safe behavior.
