FreeOTP+ is a free, open-source Android app that generates two-factor authentication codes using HOTP and TOTP. Its additions over the original FreeOTP include token import and export, search and categories, a dark theme, and optional PIN or biometric protection when opening the app. Its backup and restore feature has a specific caveat: F-Droid’s version 3.4 release notes report user issues and advise testing the process on a new device before relying on it.
What is FreeOTP+?
FreeOTP+ is an Android authenticator forked from FreeOTP. Like other one-time-password authenticator apps, it stores token configuration for accounts that support authenticator codes and generates codes on the device. A code from an authenticator is one part of two-factor authentication; it does not replace the account password or the service’s other recovery options.
FreeOTP+ supports HOTP, which generates codes based on a counter, and TOTP, which generates codes based on time. Both are established one-time-password standards: HOTP is specified in RFC 4226 and TOTP in RFC 6238. Whether a particular account works with the app depends on the service supporting a compatible authenticator setup.
What does the “plus” add?
FreeOTP+ retains the basic code-generation role and adds features for organizing tokens and moving settings:

- Import and export: The app offers settings import and export using Google Drive or other document providers.
- Token search and categories: These help find and organize saved tokens as the list grows.
- Dark theme: An alternate appearance for the app.
- App-launch protection: An option to require a PIN or biometric authentication when opening the app.
These access controls protect entry to the app; they are not a substitute for securing the Android device itself or keeping account recovery options available.
Does FreeOTP+ support TOTP?
Yes. It supports both TOTP and HOTP, and tokens can be provisioned by scanning a QR code or entering configuration manually. FreeOTP’s token-URI documentation also describes provisioning by opening a token URI link. Such URIs use the form otpauth://TYPE/LABEL?PARAMETERS, where the type is totp or hotp.

The token-URI documentation gives six digits and a 30-second period as defaults for its default token format, and also allows algorithm and display settings. Those are format defaults, not a guarantee that every service uses them; use the configuration supplied by the service when setting up an account.
The same documentation says a shared secret must be at least 128 bits and recommends 160 bits, describing this as an enforced requirement drawn from HOTP guidance. This is a statement in the token-URI documentation, not an independent measurement of FreeOTP+.

How do I back up FreeOTP+?
FreeOTP+ advertises settings export and import through Google Drive or other document providers. The exact available destinations depend on the document providers configured on the Android device. F-Droid’s release note for version 3.4 warns: “Users reported issues with the backup & restore functionality, please test this whenever you install the app on a new device.” That warning reports user issues; it does not establish that every backup fails.
- Open FreeOTP+ and use its settings export option, choosing an available document provider and destination.
- Confirm that an export was created and that you can locate it again. Do not assume that selecting a destination alone proves the file is usable.
- Before depending on the export for account recovery, test importing it on a new device or a separate installation, following the app’s available import flow.
- After import, check that the expected tokens appear and verify codes against the corresponding services before treating the migration as complete.
For important accounts, keep a separate recovery method available, such as the recovery options provided by the service. The app’s backup warning makes it prudent not to make one untested export the sole path back into those accounts.

Can I transfer FreeOTP+ to a new phone?
FreeOTP+ provides an import/export route intended to move settings, but the F-Droid version 3.4 notice means a transfer should be treated as something to test, not as a guaranteed one-step migration. Keep access to the old phone and account recovery options until you have imported the tokens and confirmed that the codes work on the new phone. If a token is missing or produces an invalid code, use the affected service’s recovery or authenticator re-enrollment process rather than assuming the export contains a usable copy.

As listed by F-Droid on October 5, 2026, version 3.4 (build 26) was added June 2, 2026, and requires Android 6.0 or newer. F-Droid lists arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86, and x86_64 architectures. The project README says Android 5.0 or newer, so the two published requirements differ; for the current F-Droid 3.4 build, follow its version-specific Android 6.0 minimum.

F-Droid says its build is signed by F-Droid and corresponds to the source tarball. It recommends installation through the F-Droid client; a direct APK download will not receive update notifications and is described by F-Droid as less secure. Google Play lists the app under developer Haowen Ning and showed an update date of May 31, 2026, when accessed in 2026.
Privacy and security considerations
Google Play’s data-safety panel carries the developer-provided declarations “No data shared with third parties” and “No data collected.” Google Play qualifies that the information is provided by the developer and may vary by use, region, and age, so these statements should be understood as a developer declaration rather than an independent privacy audit.
The available product and distribution information does not establish that the current FreeOTP+ release has undergone an independent security audit. That is not evidence that the app is unsafe; it is a limit on what can be claimed about its security assurance. As with any authenticator, protect the device and plan for account recovery, especially before replacing or resetting a phone.
