In Windows PowerShell 5.1, use New-JobTrigger and Register-ScheduledJob. For PowerShell 7 on Windows, create a Windows Task Scheduler task—typically with Register-ScheduledTask—whose action launches the intended PowerShell executable and script. Register-ScheduledJob is part of the Windows PowerShell PSScheduledJob system; it is not shipped with PowerShell 7 and is marked unsupported by PowerShell 7’s compatibility layer.
Choose the scheduler for your PowerShell version

Microsoft lists PSScheduledJob as unsupported by the PowerShell 7 compatibility layer and notes that the module is no longer shipped with PowerShell 7. ScheduledTasks is listed as natively compatible in supported Windows environments; check the target operating system and module availability. Microsoft’s PowerShell 7 module compatibility table and differences between Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7.x describe these version distinctions.
Create a repeating job in Windows PowerShell 5.1
A scheduled job combines a script or script file with a trigger. The trigger determines when the job starts; without one, registering the job does not make it run automatically. Microsoft documents daily, weekly, startup, and logon trigger scenarios. See New-JobTrigger for trigger options.
- Set the schedule: Create a trigger with
New-JobTrigger. Specify the recurrence and start time appropriate to your environment. - Register the script: Pass the trigger to
Register-ScheduledJobwith-Trigger, along with a job name and either a script block or a script file path.
For example, this Microsoft-documented pattern schedules a script for 9:00 PM every other Monday. Replace the path and timing with values suitable for your system:

Scheduled jobs are stored on disk and registered in Task Scheduler; Microsoft documents their location under Task Scheduler’s LibraryMicrosoftWindowsPowerShellScheduledJobs folder.
Use Task Scheduler for a PowerShell 7 script
For PowerShell 7 on Windows, create an ordinary Task Scheduler task with a trigger for the desired recurrence and an action that launches the PowerShell 7 executable with the script. Microsoft’s Register-ScheduledTask documentation covers registering task definitions with actions and triggers. Set and review the executable, arguments, working directory, run identity, and permissions for your script. Registration does not verify that the intended file is compatible with the target Windows version, edition, or platform.

Inspect job results and troubleshoot missed runs
For PSScheduledJob, job instances and saved output can be inspected with job cmdlets such as Get-Job and Receive-Job. The about_Scheduled_Jobs documentation explains the scheduled-job model and result handling.

- Check that the trigger specifies the intended recurrence and start time, and review job options or Task Scheduler conditions that may prevent a run.
- Confirm the run account can access the script, files, network resources, and commands it needs.
- For PSScheduledJob, review Task Scheduler history and the Task Scheduler event log for launch failures. Microsoft provides further guidance in about_Scheduled_Jobs_Troubleshooting.
- Use the management interface for the task type you created:
Get-ScheduledJobreturns jobs registered withRegister-ScheduledJob, not ordinary tasks created directly in Task Scheduler. The two kinds of task are related through Task Scheduler but are not interchangeable.
