It adds container-level settings such as ordered power operations, OVF-related metadata, and an OVF environment; it does not automatically verify that the grouped application is healthy or correctly configured.
What is a VMware vApp?
Broadcom defines a vApp as “a collection of virtual machines (and potentially other vApp containers) that are operated and monitored as a unit.” In vSphere, the vApp object extends a resource pool, adding product information, ordered power operations, support for OVF import and export, and an OVF environment for application-level customization. Broadcom vSphere Web Services API: VirtualApp
A vApp is therefore a management container, not a replacement for its member VMs. The machines retain their own configuration and operational states. Grouping them does not by itself ensure that dependencies, networking, or application health are correct.
Create and manage a vApp
The exact vSphere Client workflow and PowerCLI parameters can vary by installed release. Broadcom’s PowerCLI reference documents commands for retrieving, creating, importing, exporting, moving, changing, starting, stopping, and removing vApps; check the help for your installed release and confirm the required privileges before making changes. How vApp startup and shutdown order work
A vApp can define the order in which its member VMs start and stop. On power-on, vSphere follows the configured sequence. If a VM fails to power on, the sequence terminates, but VMs that already started remain powered on. The result can be a partially running application stack rather than a fully rolled-back vApp. Broadcom vSphere Web Services API: VirtualApp
Power-on can fail because of issues such as insufficient resources, missing network or IP configuration, or faults in the vApp or a member VM. Broadcom vSphere Web Services API: VirtualApp

- Document application dependencies and configure the sequence accordingly.
- If a start operation fails, inspect the power state of every member VM; do not assume the vApp is entirely off.
- Check available resources, network/IP settings, and VM or vApp configuration when troubleshooting.
Export a vApp as OVF or OVA
vSphere documentation supports downloading a vApp or vApp template as an OVF package or OVA archive. An OVF package contains a descriptor and one or more VMDK files; an OVA is an archive containing the descriptor and other package components. VMware vSphere documentation: OVF and OVA export
The export format also affects identity data. A default-format OVF descriptor omits deployment-specific information such as MAC addresses, BIOS UUIDs, and the network configuration section. Identity format retains deployment-specific information. Before enabling a vApp for download, the documentation requires it to be powered off and undeployed; an administrator or other privileged user must enable the download. - Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
| Export choice | Identity information | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Default-format OVF | Omits deployment-specific details such as MAC addresses, BIOS UUIDs, and network configuration. | When portability to a different deployment environment is the priority. |
| Identity-format OVF | Retains deployment-specific information. | When preserving that identity information is required by the destination workflow. |
Choose based on the destination and whether its deployment process needs the source environment’s identity settings; do not assume a default export preserves them.

A vApp snapshot operation creates a snapshot for each VM in the vApp and can be run while the vApp is powered on or off. The documented limitations are specific to the vApp snapshot workflow: it does not capture OVF product-section elements or NIC configurations, and it cannot be created if any member VM is connected to an independent disk. Creating a new vApp snapshot also overwrites existing snapshots without warning. VMware vSphere documentation: vApp snapshots

Destroying a vApp versus unregistering it
These operations have materially different consequences. Destroying a vApp also destroys its VMs and child vApps. Unregistering removes the vApp from inventory while leaving the VM files on disk. Broadcom vSphere Web Services API: VirtualApp
| Operation | Effect |
|---|---|
| Destroy | Destroys the vApp, its contained VMs, and child vApps. |
| Unregister | Removes the vApp from inventory but leaves VM files on disk. |
Before removal, establish whether you mean to delete the workloads or only remove the inventory object, and confirm the selected operation’s effect in your vSphere release.
When to use a vApp instead of managing VMs individually
Use a vApp when related VMs benefit from group-level operations, shared application metadata, an OVF environment, or coordinated power sequencing. Manage VMs individually when those container-level capabilities are unnecessary and separate administration is simpler. In either case, application dependencies and health still require appropriate configuration and monitoring.
The API reference identifies the VirtualApp object as available since vSphere API release 4.0, but that does not establish one universal vSphere Client path or guarantee identical PowerCLI parameters across current installations. Match operational instructions to your vCenter/vSphere and PowerCLI releases.
