To start a thread in Slack, open the message you want to discuss, choose Reply in thread (desktop) or Reply in Thread (mobile), write your response, and send it. To show the reply in the main channel or DM conversation as well, select the option below the message before sending.
What a Slack thread does
A thread attaches a discussion to a specific message in a channel or direct message, so replies stay grouped with that message instead of appearing as separate posts in the main conversation. Slack describes threads as a way to create “organized discussions around specific messages.” Slack Help Center: Use threads to organize discussions
Start a thread on desktop
- In the channel or DM, hover over the message you want to discuss.
- Click Reply in thread.
- Type your reply in the thread pane.
- If you also want your reply to appear in the main conversation, check the box below the message.
- Send the reply.
Start or reply to a thread on mobile
- Tap the message you want to discuss.
- Tap Reply in Thread.
- Type your reply.
- To show it in the main conversation as well, check the option below the message.
- Tap the paper-plane icon to send.
If the message already has a thread, you can also use its Add a reply field.
Open and reply to a thread with the keyboard
With focus on a message, press T or the right arrow to open or reply to its thread. In Slack’s screen reader instructions, pressing End moves focus to the reply field in the secondary view. See Use Slack with a screen reader and Slack keyboard shortcuts.

Show a reply in the main conversation
By default, a reply remains in its thread. Before sending, select the checkbox or option below the reply field to also display it in the channel or DM’s main view. Slack also documents how to send a reply to the channel after it has already been sent in its thread instructions.
Who gets notified about thread replies?
Notification behavior varies by conversation type. Slack says replies in one-to-one DMs notify by default. In channels and multi-person DMs, notifications go to people who started the thread, replied to it, or were mentioned. You can also turn notifications on or off for a specific thread; see Slack’s thread guidance.

Thread structure and availability
Slack threads are one level deep: a reply belongs to the original message rather than opening a nested thread. Slack lists thread use as available to all members and guests on all plans. Slack’s screen reader guide describes the one-level structure.
