To render video faster in After Effects, first find what is slowing the job down, then address that specific bottleneck. Check the Render Queue and Composition Profiler, keep Multi-Frame Rendering enabled, use fast local storage, and avoid repeatedly rendering work that is already finished. Preview-only changes can make editing feel faster, but they do not necessarily shorten a final export.

Find the bottleneck before changing settings

Render time can be limited by CPU processing, GPU-supported effects, memory and cache pressure, media access, repeated composition work, or simply the time needed to redraw the interface. A hardware or settings change helps only if it addresses the part of the workflow that is slow.

  1. Run a representative short test. Use the same composition, frame range, render settings, and output module you expect to use for the final job. Adobe recommends testing the workflow and output pipeline early so you can confirm the delivered file meets the actual requirements: Improve performance in After Effects.
  2. Check the Render Queue. Watch elapsed and estimated remaining time, estimated file size, available disk space, and the render information. Treat time estimates as estimates, not guarantees.
  3. Inspect expensive layers and effects. Use the Composition Profiler to see which layers and effects take the most relative render time. This helps distinguish an effects-heavy composition from one that is waiting on storage or other work.
  4. Compare like with like. Keep the tested frame range and output settings unchanged when evaluating a tweak. Render settings affect properties such as frame rate, duration, resolution, and layer quality; output module settings control format, compression, and cropping. See Adobe’s rendering and exporting guidance.

Use Multi-Frame Rendering

Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR) uses CPU cores to process multiple frames in parallel during previews and Render Queue exports. Adobe documents it as enabled by default; check or change it under Edit > Preferences > Memory & Performance on Windows or After Effects > Settings > Memory & Performance on macOS. Keep it enabled unless a specific compatibility or troubleshooting issue requires otherwise.

The result depends on CPU core count, RAM, GPU, the effects in the project, third-party plugins, and project type. Adobe’s documentation gives these illustrative After Effects 2022 examples—not current-project guarantees or independent benchmarks:

Adobe’s After Effects 2022 system category System described by Adobe Example MFR improvement
Minimum specs 4–6 CPU cores; 16 GB RAM 1.2–1.5×
Mid-range 8–10 CPU cores; 16–32 GB RAM 1.75–2×
High-end 16–64 CPU cores; 48–128 GB RAM 2.5–4×

Those examples are tied to Adobe’s After Effects 2022 guidance; actual results vary by release, system, effects, plugins, and composition. Adobe’s current general performance page recommends at least 2 GB of RAM per processor core, but that is a recommendation rather than a universal measured optimum. MFR is not the legacy “Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously” approach, which launched multiple After Effects instances. For further detail, see Adobe’s Multi-Frame Rendering documentation.

To check what is happening on your system, review Render Queue process information for concurrent frames and system use. An effect that does not support MFR displays a yellow warning icon in the Effects Control Window. That can help explain why a particular composition does not benefit as expected.

Speed up media access and disk cache

When source footage or cached frames are slow to read, use fast local storage rather than a slow drive or network location. Adobe recommends a fast disk for source footage and a separate fast disk or disk array for the disk cache; it specifically identifies SSDs as well suited to cache because of their speed. When practical, keep source media and rendered output on separate fast local disks. See Adobe’s performance recommendations.

  • Enable Disk Cache in After Effects preferences and assign as much cache space as practical on a separate fast drive.
  • Move frequently used source footage to fast local storage if media access is the bottleneck.
  • Consider an external SSD for video editing only if it provides a fast local path for your media or cache. Adobe’s guidance does not establish a particular model, capacity, interface, benchmark, or compatibility; an SSD will not automatically accelerate a CPU- or effects-limited render.

Avoid rendering the same work repeatedly

Reducing unnecessary composition work can help both previews and final output. Adobe’s performance guidance recommends removing unused project material, splitting complex projects where that makes processing easier to manage, and pre-rendering nested compositions that would otherwise be rendered again whenever they are displayed.

  • Use proxies or lower-resolution stand-ins while iterating. Work with lower-resolution or still-image proxies when you do not need the source footage’s full detail.
  • Lower composition resolution for previews. Reduce resolution while editing, then restore the required settings for the final render.
  • Focus preview work. Solo the layer being edited rather than repeatedly previewing the full composition.
  • Pre-render completed nested compositions. This can avoid recomputing a finished composition each time it is used, but ensure the pre-render retains the quality and transparency needed downstream.
  • Apply repeated effects strategically. Adobe notes that placing the same effect on an adjustment layer can process it once on the composite beneath it. This is useful only when that layer setup produces the intended image.
  • Defer expensive effects during iteration. Temporarily disable costly blurs or distortions, or reduce particle counts for previews, then restore the intended final settings.
  • Gather media before a demanding job. Use Collect Files when appropriate to consolidate project footage onto fast local storage.

Separate preview speed from final-render speed

Some changes reduce screen redraw and make After Effects feel more responsive without reducing the work needed to produce final pixels. Adobe suggests enabling hardware-accelerated previews for drawing panels, closing panels you do not need, limiting work to a region of interest, setting preview resolution to Auto, reducing magnification, and hiding controls or status details when they are not useful.

Caps Lock pauses panel updates. Adobe says this can save processing time for simple Render Queue items with many frames, but it is not a general substitute for reducing expensive composition work. Changes such as preview resolution, panel layout, magnification, and hidden controls should be understood as display or iteration aids; do not assume they lower final export time or change final image quality.

Choose GPU settings and output workflow deliberately

GPU acceleration

In Project Settings, the Video Rendering and Effects option distinguishes Mercury Software Only (CPU effects rendering) from Mercury GPU Acceleration (GPU effects rendering). Supported GPU effects may benefit from acceleration, but not all After Effects rendering is GPU-bound. Adobe also warns that GPU-accelerated effects can have small color-precision differences from CPU-only rendering in 8-bpc projects; for accuracy, Adobe advises 16-bpc or 32-bpc. Check the required image quality before changing bit depth or rendering mode. Details are in Adobe’s rendering and exporting documentation.

Render Queue or Media Encoder

Choose the export path based on what the file is for, rather than assuming one is always faster. Adobe recommends the After Effects Render Queue for high-quality intermediate movies or image sequences intended for another editing, compositing, or 3D application, and Adobe Media Encoder for compressed delivery formats such as web, DVD, or Blu-ray. The Render Queue can batch items and use multiple output modules, so one rendered movie can serve multiple exports without rendering the composition from scratch for each version.

Workflow Useful when Trade-off
After Effects Render Queue You need a high-quality intermediate, image sequence, batch output, or multiple output modules. Rendering occupies the After Effects application.
Direct queueing to Media Encoder You need a compressed delivery format and want to continue working in After Effects. Adobe cautions that rendering may be slower because the background After Effects instance may not have GPU acceleration and multiprocessing.
Render a lossless master to a watched folder, then encode in Media Encoder For applicable MPEG-2 or WMV workflows where you want After Effects rendering features followed by Media Encoder encoding. The main After Effects application remains occupied during the render; this is format- and version-specific, not a universal speed ranking.

Adobe describes the watch-folder and direct-queue options in its Media Encoder export guidance. Confirm that the chosen codec, alpha handling, bit depth, frame rate, and color requirements match the deliverable before changing the workflow.
