With synchronous computation, dependency reads, calculation and caching usually happen within one call stack. Once a computation pauses at an await, dependencies can change and newer work can begin before older work finishes.
Why async changes the reactive model
A synchronous computed value has a compact lifecycle: it reads dependencies, calculates a value, caches it, and becomes stale when a dependency changes. The runtime can treat those events as one immediate computation.
An asynchronous callback can pause before it produces a value. While it is pending, an input may change and trigger another execution. The runtime is then handling not just a derived value, but multiple executions with different starting states and completion times.
That is the central argument in Luciano0322’s DEV Community article, “When Computed Becomes Async.” It is a conceptual discussion, not an official Solid specification or confirmation of behavior in a particular Solid release.

How an older result can overwrite a newer one
Consider a computation that fetches a user record from an ID signal. The ID changes from 1 to 2 while the first request is still pending:
- Execution A starts for user ID 1 and waits for its request.
- The ID changes to 2, so execution B starts while A remains pending.
- B finishes first and produces the result for user 2.
- A finishes later. If the runtime publishes every completed result without checking its validity, the older result for user 1 can replace the newer one.
A Promise reports that its work finished; it does not know whether its result has become outdated. Luciano0322 puts the distinction this way: “A normal Promise has no concept of I am outdated. It only knows: I finished.” The runtime therefore needs a rule for deciding whether a completed execution may still publish a value.

What a runtime has to decide
One conceptual approach is to associate an execution with the graph revision or input state that started it, then compare that identity with the current state before accepting its result. The article uses revision checking as an explanatory sketch, not as a claim about Solid’s implementation. Other implementation details are not established by the article.
- Execution identity: How can the runtime tell which inputs or graph state produced a result?
- Dependency changes during pending work: Should a change start a new execution, invalidate the old one, or follow another policy?
- Stale work: Should pending work be cancelled, or allowed to finish but prevented from publishing?
- Tracking across suspension: Does dependency tracking continue after an
await, and how is that context kept separate from other asynchronous work?
These are design questions, not a list of behaviors that the article verifies for a released Solid version. In particular, it does not establish whether stale requests are cancelled or merely ignored.

Why await complicates dependency tracking
Reactive systems commonly discover dependencies when a computation reads signals. With asynchronous code, some reads may occur before suspension and others after it. Whether those later reads belong to the original computation depends on how the runtime manages tracking context.
Stopping tracking at the suspension boundary can mean that reads after await do not become dependencies of the original computation. Keeping a tracking context across the boundary creates a different challenge: concurrent asynchronous executions must not accidentally share or mix that context. Luciano0322 raises this as an open design problem; the article does not settle which policy Solid uses.

What this means for Solid and for UI behavior
The article uses Solid-style createMemo(async () => ...) to illustrate the issue, but it does not verify a release, version, or official implementation contract. Its focus is the reactive graph: dependency tracking, execution overlap and result validity.
It also deliberately does not explain UI or Suspense behavior in depth. A discussion of asynchronous computations in the graph should not be read as a guarantee about loading states, rendering, Suspense boundaries, cancellation, or any particular Solid release.
