Imperva reported that Python-based clients sent millions of requests to webshells already present on compromised PHP servers, attempting to install GSocket malware. On some investigated hosts, the activity was accompanied by persistence changes and newly created pages promoting Indonesian gambling services. The report describes abuse of compromised websites—not bots manipulating gambling games, and not a newly discovered PHP flaw used to break into the servers.

What the Python-based bots did

Imperva Threat Research published its account on January 15, 2025. It described a high-volume stream of requests from a Python-based client with similar HTTP and TLS fingerprint profiles. Requests used changing parameter names and values but included a command to install GSocket, also known as Global Socket. Imperva characterized the command as one provided by the toolkit’s publisher. Imperva’s analysis is the primary source for the observations.

The requests interacted with webshells—malicious server-side scripts that let an operator run commands remotely—that were already on compromised PHP servers. Imperva said the operators sent requests to common webshell paths using known webshell parameters. The report does not explain how the servers were first compromised, identify a specific PHP vulnerability, or establish that the Python requests achieved initial access.

Imperva described the volume as “millions of requests.” Separately, it said it had mitigated over 3 million requests related to the campaign. The first is a broad description of observed activity; the second is the vendor’s mitigation figure. Neither should be read as an exact count of infected servers or affected users.

How compromised sites were used to promote gambling

On investigated backdoored hosts, Imperva found irregularly named directories containing recently created index.php files. Those files served HTML landing pages with Indonesian text describing gambling services. The PHP code treated search-engine bots differently from ordinary visitors; ordinary visitors were redirected. Imperva reported that a redirect eventually led to pktoto[.]cc, which it described as a known Indonesian gambling site.

This setup could let operators place gambling pages on unrelated, compromised websites and route visitors onward, including as destination domains changed. The report documents the mechanism on hosts researchers investigated, but does not quantify redirects, visitor totals, revenue, or prove that every part of the campaign sent traffic to the same destination.

What Moodle and persistence artifacts indicate

Imperva identified Moodle paths among the targets and said it found backdoored Moodle instances with traces of GSocket infection. On some hosts, researchers observed changes to crontab and bashrc. Decoded scripts could reinstall GSocket from a binary named defunct, using a key stored in defunct.dat. The report says this mechanism could preserve access after a webshell was removed; it does not establish that these specific artifacts appeared on every target.

For a site administrator, the practical implication is that removing a visible webshell alone may not address all persistence. If compromise is suspected, investigate unauthorized scheduled tasks, shell startup changes, and unexpected files as well as the webshell itself. These are response considerations inferred from the persistence described, not a complete incident-response procedure.

What is known—and not known—about the campaign

The Hacker News published its report on January 17, 2025, attributing a statement to Imperva researcher Daniel Johnston: “Over the past two months, a significant volume of attacks from Python-based bots has been observed, suggesting a coordinated effort to exploit thousands of web apps.” The Hacker News report attributes that characterization to Johnston; it is not an independently verified count of affected applications.

Imperva said the bots targeted servers across various regions, with a notable focus on Indonesian sites. It suggested the activity appeared tied to gambling-site proliferation and potentially to heightened government scrutiny. That is an analyst interpretation: the reporting does not demonstrate that enforcement caused the campaign, identify its operators, establish the number of compromised sites, or confirm activity after the January 2025 reports. The findings are historical reporting, not evidence that the operation remains active in 2026.

What administrators can do

Imperva recommended auditing PHP servers for backdoors, including common webshell paths, monitoring for unauthorized files, keeping software updated, and using robust security measures. These recommendations are useful starting points, not a full recovery checklist. In light of the reported persistence, organizations investigating a suspected compromise should also examine scheduled tasks and shell startup files rather than treating webshell deletion as conclusive cleanup.

For organizations evaluating defenses, relevant capabilities include PHP and Moodle environment coverage, visibility into webshells and file changes, controls for bot and application-layer traffic, and the ability to investigate and respond to compromise. Imperva’s campaign report also promotes its own security offering and cites the company’s mitigation figure; it is not an independent comparative test of security products. Imperva’s recommendations and account should be understood in that context.
