Linux systems become vulnerable when attackers can reach services or accounts that are poorly maintained or insufficiently controlled. CISA and the NSA warn that “Poor patch management and network hygiene practices often enable adversaries to discover open attack vectors and exploit critical vulnerabilities.” That is a warning about common security weaknesses—not evidence that Linux is uniquely or universally under attack.

Reduce the opportunities for compromise by keeping supported software updated, limiting network exposure, protecting administrative access, applying least privilege, maintaining offline backups, and checking configuration against a baseline that fits your distribution and release.

Why Linux systems can be exposed

A Linux host is at greater risk when vulnerable software is reachable, unnecessary services accept connections, or administrative accounts are easy to access or hold excessive privileges. The CISA and NSA misconfiguration advisory identifies poor patch management and network hygiene as ways adversaries find openings. It does not establish a Linux-specific attack rate or show that Linux is more or less secure than another operating system.

Remote administration needs particular care. In a network-appliance case study, CISA described actors enabling an additional SSH endpoint on Cisco IOS XR, creating a local user, and granting that account sudo privileges. IOS XR is Linux-based, but this is a device-specific incident; it is not evidence that ordinary Linux systems share that endpoint or configuration. [CISA advisory]

Prioritize these defenses

1. Keep supported software patched

Use a supported release of your distribution and install applicable security updates for the operating system, kernel, and applications. Check your distribution’s security notices and follow its instructions for updates and restarts; commands and reboot requirements differ by distribution and package lifecycle. A single update command should not be assumed to work for every Linux system. CISA and NSA identify poor patch management as a weakness that can help attackers find exploitable openings. [CISA/NSA misconfigurations advisory]

2. Expose only services you need

Inventory services listening on network interfaces and disable those that are unnecessary. For services that must remain available, restrict access to intended clients or trusted networks using the firewall and service-specific access controls appropriate to your distribution and environment. Monitor required internet-facing infrastructure. CISA and NSA recommend minimizing unnecessary exposure rather than leaving services reachable by default. [CISA/NSA misconfigurations advisory]

3. Restrict administrative access and harden SSH

Allow only intended users and networks to reach management services. For administrators, prefer public-key SSH authentication when it fits your operational needs. Do not disable password authentication until you have tested another working login path and confirmed a recovery method; otherwise, a configuration mistake can lock out legitimate administrators.

Review local accounts, remove or disable those that are no longer needed, avoid routine root logins, and grant elevated permissions only to accounts that require them. CISA’s appliance case illustrates the consequence of an unauthorized account with sudo rights, while remaining specific to that device and incident. [CISA advisory]

4. Apply least privilege and plan for recovery

Give users and services only the permissions needed for their roles. Keep an inventory of critical assets and establish which systems and data must be restored first. Maintain backups protected from routine access by the systems they back up; offline copies can help preserve recovery options if an attacker compromises a connected environment. An external drive is one possible way to hold an offline copy, but CISA’s guidance does not prescribe a particular device or brand. [CISA StopRansomware Guide]

Choose a hardening baseline that fits the system

A benchmark is useful only when it applies to the machine’s distribution, release, and role. NIST’s Linux hardening guidance names Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) Compliance Checker (SCC) and OpenSCAP as tools for checking against an applicable DISA Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) or CIS Benchmark. NIST also describes using OpenSCAP for policy remediation. [NIST Linux Hardening]

Red Hat’s Security hardening guide is a concrete example for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, with security and compliance profiles specific to that product and release. It was last updated May 30, 2025; its configuration details should not be treated as universal Linux defaults. [Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 Security hardening]

Option Coverage and fit Assessment or remediation Operational considerations
Applicable DISA STIG Use when the selected STIG applies to the distribution, release, and required security context; it is not a universal Linux baseline. NIST names STIGs as a possible baseline for compliance checking; the exact assessment and remediation workflow depends on the chosen tools and content. Review requirements and compatibility with the machine’s role before applying settings.
Applicable CIS Benchmark Choose a benchmark for the system’s specific distribution and release, and select a profile suited to its role. NIST names CIS Benchmarks as an applicable baseline for checking with SCC or OpenSCAP. Check the selected profile against operational and application requirements.
SCC or OpenSCAP Use with applicable security content for the target system; tool suitability depends on platform and content coverage. Used to assess configuration; NIST also describes OpenSCAP for policy remediation. Automated remediation can change system behavior. Review proposed changes and understand their effects before applying them in production.
Red Hat RHEL 8 hardening guide Specific to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and its documented profiles. Provides hardening and compliance guidance for that product and release. Do not apply its configuration details as defaults for other distributions or releases.

For a workstation or general-purpose server, prioritize a baseline that matches the installed system and does not break required services. In a regulated environment, use the applicable compliance requirements and validate changes before deployment. An assessment can reveal deviations; it does not by itself guarantee that a system is secure.
