Read the sections that match the symptom: the command combines local device state with user-specific information, and one successful check does not prove the others are healthy.
Run dsregcmd in the right context
Open Command Prompt and run dsregcmd /status. Microsoft’s dsregcmd command reference recommends running it as a domain user account. For valid User State and SSO State values, run it in the affected user’s logged-in session.
Some checks need a different context. A hybrid join is carried out in SYSTEM context, so an elevated prompt most closely approximates that join scenario and exposes pre-join diagnostic data. Certain post-join tests, including KeySignTest, also require elevation. An elevated prompt can make WamDefaultSet show an error; do not treat that field alone as proof of a registration failure.
Identify the local join state
In Device State, interpret AzureAdJoined, EnterpriseJoined, and DomainJoined together. Microsoft documents these combinations:

WorkplaceJoined appears separately in User State and indicates workplace registration; it is not a substitute for reading the three device join fields. For local hybrid-join verification, confirm both AzureAdJoined and DomainJoined are YES, then compare the output’s DeviceId with the corresponding device record in the tenant. Check the cloud device record independently
For an Entra joined or hybrid joined computer, review Device Details and DeviceAuthStatus. The join fields report local state; DeviceAuthStatus tests the cloud device object. Microsoft defines SUCCESS as the device existing and being enabled in Entra ID. A failed status can mean the object is disabled or deleted. FAILED. ERROR means the test could not run, not that the command has established a specific object problem.

- If local join fields indicate joined but authentication status fails, check that device’s Entra record and whether it is enabled before choosing a recovery action.
- If the command cannot run the status test, treat cloud-object health as unresolved and use the tenant’s device and sign-in diagnostics as appropriate.
Tenant Details can list MDM URLs when automatic enrollment is configured, but their presence does not prove that this particular device is managed. Empty URL fields can mean MDM is not configured or that the user is outside the enrollment scope.
Use Pre-join Diagnostic Data for hybrid-join failures
When a domain-joined device cannot complete hybrid join, inspect the Pre-join Diagnostic Data section. Microsoft’s hybrid-join troubleshooting guide and dsregcmd reference describe these fields:

- AD Connectivity Test: A failure points to a pre-check issue involving connectivity to Active Directory.
- AD Configuration Test: Checks the on-premises Service Connection Point (SCP) configuration used for discovery.
- Previous Registration: Records the time of the last failed attempt.
- Error Phase: Identifies
pre-check,discover,auth, orjoin, narrowing down where the attempt stopped. - Client/Server ErrorCode, Server Message, and HTTPS Status: Provide details about the client-side or service response.
- Request ID: Helps correlate the attempt with server-side logs.
Run this diagnostic from an elevated prompt when investigating the join itself, because the join operation runs in SYSTEM context. Use the phase and response details to direct investigation toward the corresponding AD connectivity, SCP/discovery, authentication, or join-stage issue rather than assuming every hybrid-join failure has the same cause.
Separate a post-join sign-in issue from registration
If the device appears joined but the user cannot obtain the expected sign-in experience, run the command in that user’s session and inspect SSO State. Microsoft’s field reference and primary refresh token troubleshooting guide explain the relevant signals:

AzureAdPrt : NOindicates an error acquiring a Primary Refresh Token (PRT).- If
AzureAdPrtUpdateTimeis more than four hours old, Microsoft says a refresh problem is likely. For a hybrid device, its troubleshooting guidance suggests locking and unlocking Windows to prompt a refresh, then checking whether the update time changes. - When available, acquisition and refresh diagnostics can show an HRESULT, user identity, credential type, correlation ID, endpoint URI, HTTP method and status, and server error. Use these details to trace the attempt rather than treating the PRT indicator as a join-state result.
On shared computers, diagnostic details might belong to another user’s sign-in attempt. Confirm the identity and attempt time in the output before using those details to diagnose the currently affected user.

AadRecoveryEnabled : YES means the device’s stored keys are unusable and recovery is pending. KeySignTest : PASSED indicates healthy device keys; a failure usually means the device is marked for recovery. The test requires elevation. Microsoft describes different recovery experiences depending on join type, so use the recovery procedure for the device’s actual state rather than deregistering it solely because a sign-in symptom appeared.

Use additional diagnostics when the output is not enough
The Microsoft Entra admin center Windows device troubleshooting workflow analyzes a collected authlogs folder and suggests next steps. Microsoft also publishes the DSRegTool sample, which advertises more than 50 tests spanning Entra join, hybrid join, and registration, including endpoint connectivity, device existence and enabled state, SCP verification, PRT checks, health status, and log collection. It is an optional sample diagnostic aid; assess its suitability and maintenance status before adopting it in production.
Choose the branch that matches the evidence

These checks answer different questions: local join status, cloud-object health, user PRT state, hybrid AD/SCP readiness, and key recovery are not interchangeable. If the command narrows the issue but does not explain a tenant-specific failure, correlate its error and request details with the relevant Entra service or audit logs.
