Thingiverse is no longer the only sensible place to start: try Printables or Thangs as well, then judge each model by its files, instructions, evidence of successful prints, and license. There is no established universal winner, and a repository’s reputation cannot guarantee that a particular design will print well.
Where can you find good 3D print models besides Thingiverse?
Start with Printables or Thangs, choosing according to what you want to make and how you prefer to search. Printables presents itself as a 3D model database and showed recent model and blog activity in 2026. Thangs offers model search and downloads, paid model bundles, and physical print sales, with categories including functional prints, miniatures, tools, organizers, and toys.
Those differences can help you decide where to browse, but they do not establish which site has better search or more reliable models. The reviewed sources offer no comparable print-success rates or platform-wide quality measurements. Search more than one repository when the first results do not fit your project.
What is happening to Thingiverse?
Thingiverse is changing ownership, not disappearing. Tom’s Hardware reported on February 12, 2026, that MyMiniFactory acquired 100% of Thingiverse from UltiMaker. The report said Thingiverse would remain a standalone platform within MyMiniFactory’s SoulCrafted initiative, with cleanup and infrastructure stabilization planned before a business model for creator monetization. That report also said Thingiverse began in 2008 and had over 8 million users and well over 2.5 million “things” at announcement time. These are reported historical scale figures, not independently verified current counts. Romain Kidd, identified in the report as Thingiverse’s new CEO, described the SoulCrafted initiative this way: “This is about what kind of internet and future we want.”

Evaluate the individual model page rather than relying on the repository name. Before downloading, check these details:

- Print evidence: Look for photos or comments showing that someone printed this specific design. Treat them as useful signals, not a guarantee for your printer and settings.
- Files and instructions: Confirm the download includes the format you need and that the page explains assembly, orientation, or other relevant requirements.
- Fit for your project: Check dimensions, intended use, and category. A decorative miniature, a functional part, and an organizer call for different design details.
- License: Read the license attached to the model before selling a physical print, remixing the design, or redistributing its files. Do not assume a site-wide policy grants commercial rights to every upload.
- Workflow: Consider whether the file and page information suit your printer and slicer workflow. The reviewed sources do not establish a comparative integration advantage for these repositories.
Should you stop using Thingiverse?
No. Keep it in your search mix when its large legacy archive may contain a useful design, while recognizing that its reported transition is still underway. Compare a promising Thingiverse result with alternatives, and apply the same checks to its files, print evidence, instructions, and model-specific license.
