When a React component needs page as a number and q as a string, reading window.location.search, converting values, and choosing fallbacks can quickly become repetitive. Lei Wang built @standard-search-params/react to handle that chore with validators supplied per query-parameter key, using Standard Schema as a common interface across compatible validation libraries.

Why build another React search-parameter hook?

Query strings contain text, even when an application needs numbers, enums, or other typed values. Components often end up repeating the same work: read the URL, convert each value, and decide what to do when a parameter is missing or malformed. Wang’s September 21, 2026 article describes the resulting code as repetitive and its fallback behavior as easy to make inconsistent.

Libraries already address typed URL parameters. The distinction Wang emphasizes is not that the general problem was unsolved, but that this hook accepts validators through Standard Schema, rather than binding its integration to one validation library. The npm README lists Zod (v3.24+ or v4), Valibot, and ArkType as compatible examples. That makes the validator interface portable among those implementations; it does not mean every feature of those libraries is supported by the hook.

Why validators are supplied one key at a time

Callers pass a plain object mapping query keys to validators, for example { page: z.coerce.number().int().min(1), q: z.string().min(1) }. The hook validates each declared key independently. If page fails, a valid q can still be returned.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

There is also an interface reason for this shape: Standard Schema does not define a library-independent way to extract a field validator from a composed object schema. A per-key map avoids requiring library-specific extraction APIs, such as Zod’s .pick() or Valibot’s .entries. The trade-off is that this is not whole-object validation: checks that depend on relationships between fields in a composed schema are not applied.

What the hook returns when a value is invalid

The hook exposes two distinct views: searchParams contains raw string values, while validatedSearchParams contains successfully parsed values. Only keys in the validator map are read. For a URL like ?page=2&q=hello&sort=bad, with validators for page and q, the validated result can contain page: 2 and q: 'hello'; sort is not included because it has no validator.

The package documentation summarizes its failure-isolation intent this way: “One invalid param never throws away the rest.” A key that should pass through without meaningful constraints still needs a validator, such as an always-succeeding schema.

When and how the URL is read

This is a browser-side hook. It reads window.location.search after mount, rather than during server rendering. In an SSR framework, the documented initial server render and corresponding client render remain not-ready until the client effect reads and validates the URL. This avoids accessing window on the server, but means the hook cannot provide validated search values for the initial server-rendered HTML. If the server-rendered output needs those values, validate the server-provided parameter object directly.

By default, the hook reads the URL once on mount. Browser back and forward support is optional: pass { listenToPopstate: true } to listen for the browser’s popstate event. That event does not cover SPA router pushes and navigations. When the router location changes, the caller must invoke the hook’s refresh() method. Refreshes for an unchanged search string are skipped unless forced.

Deliberate limits to account for

  • Independent fields, not cross-field rules: validation is per key, so composed object-schema checks between fields are not run.
  • Synchronous validation only: a validator that returns a Promise is treated as invalid, with a development warning.
  • Stable key set: the hook reads only the keys present on the initial render. If the key set genuinely changes, the documentation says to remount; development builds warn about the change.
  • Navigation integration is explicit: back/forward listening is opt-in, and SPA router changes require the caller to connect location changes to refresh().

The README for the listed 0.2.0 package states that “react (>=16.8) is the only peer dependency.” This is the package’s stated peer-dependency requirement, not a claim that every React environment or rendering setup has identical behavior.

Who this design fits

The package is a focused option for a React application that wants per-parameter parsing, can accept post-mount client values, and benefits from using validators from more than one Standard Schema-compatible library. It is a less direct fit when the application needs validated values in server-rendered HTML, asynchronous validation, cross-field constraints, or automatic subscriptions to its router’s navigation events.

Wang writes in the article, “機能を積み増すより、「挙動が予測できる」ことを優先して作っています。” The design reflects that stated priority: narrow per-key behavior and explicit refresh integration rather than a broader URL-state abstraction. The article and README describe the intended behavior; they do not establish comparative performance, widespread adoption, or superiority over other query-parameter libraries.
