To delete a protected organizational unit (OU), first turn off its accidental-deletion protection, then remove it with the Active Directory PowerShell module. If the OU contains child objects, removal requires -Recursive—and Microsoft warns that this also deletes protected children. Check the target and its contents before changing protection or running a deletion command.
Before you delete the OU
Use an administrative PowerShell session with the ActiveDirectory module available, and make sure you are working against the intended Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) instance. Confirm the OU’s distinguished name (DN) or GUID, inspect its protection setting, and review its child objects. Follow your organization’s change-approval process before making a destructive change.
Newly created OUs are protected from accidental deletion by default unless creation explicitly sets protection to false. Microsoft documents that an OU whose ProtectedFromAccidentalDeletion property is true cannot be deleted until that value is changed.
Delete a protected OU with PowerShell

Set and verify the target
Replace the example DN with the exact OU you intend to remove. Retrieve the object and check its name, DN, GUID, and protection setting before proceeding.

Review the OU’s contents
Check the OU and its subtree in your environment so you know which objects are in scope. Do not use recursive removal unless you have reviewed every child object and have authorization to delete them.

Only after confirming the target and approval, clear its protection property:

Remove the OU using the appropriate command

Important: recursive removal deletes protected children
-Recursive is not a way to preserve protected descendants. Microsoft’s Remove-ADOrganizationalUnit documentation states that protected child objects are removed when this parameter is specified. Its documented examples distinguish the parent’s protection from the children’s: a protected parent blocks deletion, while an unprotected parent removed recursively can take protected children with it.

Keep the default confirmation prompt for an interactive administrative deletion. The cmdlet documentation shows that -Confirm:$False suppresses it; do not disable that safeguard for a manual operation.
What to verify if removal fails
- The OU is still protected: Check
ProtectedFromAccidentalDeletionon the exact target. Microsoft documents a terminating error when that property is true. - The OU contains children: An OU with child objects requires
-Recursiveto remove them. First review the complete deletion scope; recursive removal deletes protected children too. - The target identity is wrong or ambiguous: Recheck the DN or GUID returned by the inspection command before retrying.
