RDP is not inherently insecure, but exposing it directly to the internet, leaving systems unpatched, or allowing unnecessary access can make it a serious security risk. Microsoft advises against direct internet connections to RDP because the protocol has limited protection against modern attacks such as password spraying. If remote access is needed, put it behind a VPN or remote-access gateway, require strong authentication, and limit what the session can reach.
Why do people say RDP is insecure?
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) lets a user interact with a Windows computer over a network. That makes it useful for support and administration, but also means an exposed or poorly controlled RDP service can become a path into a device and, potentially, the wider network. The risk comes from how RDP is deployed and managed—not from a rule that every RDP configuration is unsafe.
Direct internet exposure invites unwanted login attempts
A publicly reachable RDP listener can be targeted with password spraying and other attempts to gain access. Microsoft says direct RDP is not recommended for internet connections because it has limited protections against modern attacks. Its privileged-access guidance describes gateway-based alternatives: Microsoft Learn: Securing privileged access intermediaries.
Stolen or weak credentials can turn access into an entry point
If an attacker obtains or guesses credentials that are allowed to connect, RDP can provide access to the host under that account. Reusing passwords, permitting more accounts than necessary, or accepting connections from unrestricted networks increases the opportunity for misuse. Multifactor authentication (MFA), account lockouts, source restrictions, and monitoring reduce risk, but MFA alone does not guarantee that an account or device cannot be compromised.

Unpatched RDP implementations can have serious flaws
BlueKeep, identified as CVE-2019-0708, was a severe vulnerability affecting specified older Windows releases. It could allow remote code execution on vulnerable systems. This is a historical example involving affected versions; it does not mean that every current Windows computer has BlueKeep. Microsoft’s advisory explains the flaw and mitigations: Protect against BlueKeep.
Network Level Authentication (NLA) can mitigate some pre-authentication risk, including in the BlueKeep scenario, but it is not a substitute for security updates, supported operating systems, or access controls. Microsoft continues to recommend putting internet-facing RDP behind a second factor such as a VPN, SSL tunnel, or RDP gateway.

RDP sessions can share resources from the local device
RDP connections can redirect local resources to the remote session. Depending on the connection settings, those resources can include drives, the clipboard, smart cards, WebAuthn devices, microphones, and other peripherals. A malicious or unexpected RDP file can initiate a connection to an attacker-controlled computer and request access to local resources. Microsoft documents the risks and configuration details in RDP file settings.
Administrative jump hosts are valuable targets
A jump server can concentrate access to sensitive systems and handle privileged sessions or credentials. Microsoft notes that this makes jump servers attractive targets. Treat them as high-value systems: tightly control who can connect, restrict where connections come from, and monitor access.

When should you disable RDP?
If there is no business need for remote desktop access, disable it. CISA says disabling RDP blocks adversary initial access and lateral movement using the protocol: CISA: Disable Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) (CM0025). Before disabling it, identify the users and systems that rely on it and arrange another support or administration method where needed.

How should you secure RDP when it is required?
- Keep the listener off the public internet. Use an authenticated VPN or remote-access gateway instead of publishing the RDP service directly. For Azure resources, Microsoft lists Azure Bastion among the alternatives in its privileged-access intermediary guidance. Check that the endpoint’s RDP listener is not publicly reachable.
- Require MFA and narrow access. Require MFA for remote access, preferably phishing-resistant MFA where your environment supports it. Allow only the accounts that need RDP and restrict connections to approved source networks. CISA’s Cross-Sector Cybersecurity Performance Goals include MFA, account lockouts, and logging RDP login attempts as relevant safeguards. Microsoft describes phishing-resistant MFA options in its authentication strengths guidance.
- Patch supported systems and retire unsupported ones. Apply security updates promptly and plan to replace operating systems that no longer receive support. NLA is an additional mitigation, not a reason to leave a vulnerable system unpatched.
- Minimize redirected resources. Verify the publisher and destination computer for RDP files, and reject unexpected files. Leave drive, clipboard, and other redirections disabled unless a specific task requires them; enable only the resources needed for that session.
- Inventory and monitor RDP use. Keep track of which endpoints have RDP enabled, who is permitted to connect, and how access is controlled. Review login attempts and investigate unexpected or repeated failures.
Which RDP access approach fits your needs?
| Choice | Main trade-off | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Direct internet RDP | Convenient connection, but greater exposure and fewer access controls at the network boundary | Microsoft does not recommend this for internet connections; assess whether the listener is publicly reachable and use a gateway-based alternative. |
| RDP through a VPN or gateway | More access control, with added setup and operational overhead | Check MFA support, source restrictions, monitoring, and who can reach the gateway. |
| Disable RDP | Smaller attack surface, but remote desktop workflows must stop or use another method | Determine whether RDP is needed for business operations and identify affected users before disabling it. |
| Retain restricted RDP | Preserves required remote operations while demanding ongoing safeguards | Limit accounts and source networks, enforce MFA and lockouts, patch systems, and review logs. |
| Full resource redirection | More convenience, with more local data and devices exposed to the remote session | Identify which drives, clipboard access, authentication devices, and audio resources the task actually needs. |
| Minimum resource redirection | Less convenient for some tasks, but limits what the remote system can access from the local device | Enable only the specific resources required for the session. |
