To redact text in Adobe Acrobat Pro, open All tools > Redact a PDF, mark the text or images to remove, select Apply, then save the sanitized document. Redaction removes marked visible content; sanitizing separately removes hidden information such as metadata and comments.
Redact text in Acrobat Pro

Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro and choose All tools > Redact a PDF. Adobe’s current desktop instructions describe this workflow for Acrobat Pro. Adobe’s redaction instructions were updated August 31, 2026.

In the left pane, choose Redact text and images.

Drag across each text or image area you want removed. Review the marked areas before applying the redaction.

Select Apply. In the dialog, decide whether to sanitize and remove hidden information as well, then select Continue.

In Save Sanitized Document, choose the filename and location, then select Save. Keep an unredacted source copy if you may need the original later: Adobe says redaction is permanent and cannot be undone once applied and saved.
Find and mark repeated text
If the same sensitive name, phrase, or value appears more than once in searchable text, use Acrobat Pro’s Find text and redact workflow rather than locating each instance manually. You can search for a single word or phrase, multiple words or phrases, or patterns; review the returned matches, select all or individual occurrences, and mark matches as whole words or partial words. Inspect the results before applying them. Adobe’s search-and-redact instructions were updated November 5, 2025.

Check scanned pages and text rendered as images
Find Text does not search text inside images or line art. A search that finds every occurrence in selectable PDF text can still miss a name or number shown in a scan, screenshot, or graphic. Inspect those pages visually and mark visible sensitive content separately. Adobe’s image workflow is to double-click the image, apply the redaction, optionally sanitize, and save. Adobe’s instructions for redacting images were updated September 23, 2025.
Choose whether to sanitize hidden information
Redaction and sanitization address different content. Redaction removes marked visible text or images, replacing them with colored boxes. Sanitization removes hidden data, which can include metadata, embedded content, scripts, comments, and hidden layers. If you need to remove hidden information, use one of these separate cleanup options:

Remove all: Choose All tools > Redact a PDF > Sanitize document > Remove all, then save.

Selectively remove: Choose Selectively remove, select the relevant items in the Hidden Information panel, choose Remove, and save.

Choosing to sanitize while applying redactions is a way to handle both visible marked content and hidden data in the same overall task; it does not make the two operations interchangeable. Adobe’s sanitization instructions were updated September 23, 2025.

Before applying marks, Acrobat Pro lets you set the fill color and choose whether to show overlay text. You can also enter custom overlay text and configure its font, size, and alignment. These options change the appearance of the marked areas; they do not replace selecting Apply. Adobe’s appearance settings were updated September 23, 2025.
