What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can query server and application logs with SQL without ELK or a cloud service by keeping files on a computer you control and using a local SQL engine such as DuckDB. Structured files and existing SQLite databases can be queried directly; plain-text logs usually need parsing into rows and columns first. “Local” describes where queries run, not necessarily whether the app makes any network requests, so check the selected tool’s behavior if no network activity is a requirement.
What you need before querying logs
The workflow assumes the machine running the SQL engine can access the log files. Keep the originals in a controlled local directory and work from copies or read-only inputs when you need to preserve evidence. Start with a small representative sample: identify the format, encoding, timestamp conventions, and whether one event spans one line or several.
For analysis, aim for a consistent set of fields such as timestamp, severity, host, service, and message. Preserve the original timestamp text and raw message where practical; retaining a source filename and line number can also help trace a result back to its input. These are useful schema choices, not fields DuckDB automatically supplies for every log.

Structured files
DuckDB’s documentation covers reading text files and querying supported file formats directly. That makes it suitable for local SQL workflows over structured data, but file access is not the same as understanding every log format. See the DuckDB data import and export overview and its CSV documentation for supported file-reading workflows.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For CSV, JSON, newline-delimited JSON, or Parquet, inspect the available fields and map them to a consistent schema before adapting the examples below. DuckLocal’s product page lists support for several such file types, but that is a vendor statement rather than an independent compatibility audit: DuckLocal.
Existing SQLite database
If an application already stores events in SQLite, you may be able to query its tables without exporting them first. DuckDB’s SQLite extension documents installation, loading, and attaching an existing database; the exact tables and column names depend on the application. Follow the DuckDB SQLite extension documentation.

Plain-text logs
For unstructured text, first turn each event into a record with fields you can query. A SQL engine’s ability to read a file does not establish that it can parse arbitrary Apache, Nginx, systemd journal, Windows Event Log, or application-specific syntax. Parsing may require a format-specific tool or a preprocessing step, especially for multiline events, inconsistent timestamps, and fields embedded in message text. Keep the raw line or event alongside extracted values so you can inspect parsing mistakes.
Build a queryable table
The SQL below assumes you have already created a table called logs with columns ts (a normalized timestamp), host, service, level, and message. This is an example schema for adaptation, not a table DuckDB creates automatically from arbitrary logs.

Check what “local” means for your setup
DuckDB UI documentation says local query execution is the default, but also documents that the UI server fetches its UI files from a configured remote URL. Therefore, local query execution alone does not prove an application has no network activity or that it works fully offline. Review the DuckDB UI documentation, including the asset configuration relevant to your deployment.

DuckLocal says it runs DuckDB on the computer, reads files in place, and does not upload them. Those are the vendor’s claims, not an independent audit: DuckLocal. DuckViz describes a local bridge between its CLI and browser app for SQL-based log analysis; verify the current deployment, network behavior, and privacy claims before using it with sensitive data: DuckViz log analysis.
- Check whether queries run locally or use a remote service.
- Review extensions, remote file sources, telemetry settings, and any UI assets fetched from the network.
- If policy requires no network access, test with networking observed or disabled in a controlled environment before using real logs.
Test with representative files
There is no established universal performance threshold for this workflow. File size, format, parsing steps, machine resources, and query shape can all affect runtime, so try representative files on the actual computer before relying on the workflow for an incident or a large archive. Likewise, do not assume that support for reading a file means the tool will parse its log grammar or handle multiline events correctly; validate extracted rows against the originals.
