A flaky microservice test passes and fails on the same relevant code version because some part of its execution is nondeterministic. A retry can confirm that outcomes vary, but it cannot tell you why. Preserve the first failure, compare it with passing runs, and follow correlated evidence across service boundaries before changing the test or treating the build as healthy.

What makes a microservice test flaky?

A test is flaky when repeated executions produce different outcomes even though the relevant code version has not changed. That is different from a consistent regression: a regression generally continues to fail under the same relevant conditions, while a flaky test may turn green on a retry.

In a microservice system, a test can cross service, network, dependency, orchestration, and data boundaries. That creates more places where timing, independently changing dependencies, partitions, or shared test data could affect an outcome. These are hypotheses to investigate, not proof that any one of them caused a particular failure.

Gruber and colleagues’ 2023 multivocal review covered 651 sources—560 academic articles and 91 grey-literature articles and posts—with its review corpus extending through April 2022. It reports several organization- or study-specific figures: a 2017 open-source-project study found 13% of failed builds were due to flaky tests; Google reported around 16% of tests were flaky in 2016; and GitHub reported that 9% of commits had at least one flaky-test-caused red build in 2020. Those figures use different populations and definitions, so they are not a common prevalence benchmark and cannot diagnose your suite.

How to investigate a flaky failure

1. Preserve the first failure

Before rerunning, record enough context to compare executions and reconstruct what happened. Capture:

  • The test name, suite, shard, and build identifier.
  • The commit and relevant service, dependency, and configuration versions.
  • Failure and event timestamps, test output, and any trace, transaction, or correlation identifier.
  • Whether nearby tests failed, and any visible resource pressure or service restarts.

Then repeat the test in a controlled way and compare a failing run with a passing one. A green retry demonstrates variability; it does not establish that the test or service is healthy. There is no universal rerun count that proves flakiness or rules out a regression.

2. Decide what behavior the test should prove

Identify the behavior under test before choosing a fix. If the test is meant to verify local business logic, isolate that logic from remote services. If it is meant to verify interactions, keep the necessary boundary in scope and make the environment as controlled as practical.

Test level Behavior and boundary Use it when Trade-off
Unit Local logic, without requiring a live network of services. You need fast feedback on a focused behavior. Google Cloud recommends unit tests for the bulk of testing. It cannot validate real cross-service behavior that lies outside its boundary.
Component or integration A service or component interacting with its dependencies. You need to check behavior at a service boundary or with selected dependencies. The additional network and environment dependencies create more setup and potential variation than a local test.
Contract Expectations across an API boundary. You need to check whether services agree on an interface without making every test a full user journey. It checks the agreed contract; it does not by itself prove every runtime interaction works end to end.
End-to-end A cross-service user journey. The journey’s combined behavior matters and cannot be established at a smaller boundary. More services and infrastructure participate, so failures can require evidence from several components to locate.

Toby Clemson’s foundational 2014 guidance on testing in a microservice architecture distinguishes unit, integration, component, contract, and end-to-end approaches, and explains why network partitions call for reconsidering monolithic testing strategies. No single level replaces all the others. Keep selected higher-level tests for interactions or failure modes local tests cannot validate, rather than making every behavior depend on a full distributed deployment.

3. Correlate evidence across services

Use a test-run or transaction identifier and timestamps to align test output with service telemetry. Google Cloud’s observability guidance describes the roles this way: metrics show aggregate behavior such as request rate, error rate, and latency; logs capture discrete events; and traces show a transaction’s journey across applications or components. Together, they can help locate where an error occurred or where time accumulated.

Check whether the failing run correlates with service restarts, dependency errors, delayed or reordered work, shared data, resource saturation, or a deployment or configuration change. Compare those signals with a passing run rather than assuming a coincident event caused the failure. Google Cloud recommends monitoring service interactions for rising errors or latency; Google’s SRE guidance discusses race conditions and flakiness in large test systems.

4. Repair the identified cause and stabilize the setup

Change the assumption or setup that the evidence implicates, not merely the symptom. Depending on the failure, practical changes might include controlling test data and cleanup, isolating shared state, making asynchronous completion conditions explicit, pinning dependency versions, or provisioning a repeatable environment. These are possible interventions, not universal fixes.

AWS Well-Architected DevOps Guidance recommends “rigorously investigating and resolving” root causes, refining test design, and ensuring the environment is stable and reproducible. For higher-level integration and system tests, Google Cloud recommends automated checks; infrastructure as code can help teams create and tear down dedicated test environments and resources where practical.

How to handle a test that is still flaky

If the cause cannot be resolved immediately, make the test’s status visible instead of silently discarding failures or presenting a retry-passed build as equivalent to a clean deterministic pass. AWS recommends a policy such as quarantining flaky tests until they are resolved. A useful team policy should identify ownership and the route back into the suite; the sources do not prescribe universal deadlines, escalation rules, or gating values.

Retries are useful as an observation: they can show that the result varies. They are not a substitute for root-cause investigation or a repair. Preserve both the original failure and retry outcome so the variability remains visible to engineers reviewing the build.

When the test is exposing a real resilience requirement

Not every intermittent failure means the test is invalid. A failure during dependency or infrastructure disruption may expose a legitimate system behavior worth testing deliberately. In that case, design a controlled recovery test with a defined scope, safety measures, monitoring, and rollback preparation. Google Cloud’s recovery-testing guidance includes scenarios such as regional failover, release rollback, and data restoration, and recommends measuring recovery against recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO).

That is a planned resilience exercise, not repeated execution of an unexplained functional test. Google SRE’s testing chapter also gives an illustrative calculation: under its stated assumptions, 42,000 test results would each need individual correctness above 99.9999% to keep the aggregate false-rejection rate below 1%. This is a worked example, not a measured reliability rate for test suites.
