The “latest ref pattern” in React is a manual technique for letting a long-lived callback read changing logic through a ref. For logic called from an Effect, React’s useEffectEvent is the dedicated API for reading the latest committed props and state without restarting that Effect. These approaches solve a stale-value problem in different contexts; neither replaces state for values that affect what the UI renders.

What the latest ref pattern means

A function created during a render closes over values from that render. If an interval or subscription keeps calling that function after later renders, it may continue to see the old values. The manual latest-ref pattern stores a callback in a ref and has the long-lived function call the callback currently held there.

A ref persists across renders, and changing its current property does not trigger a render. React’s useRef reference states: “When you change the ref.current property, React does not re-render your component.” That makes refs useful for mutable values that do not drive the rendered output, but not a substitute for state when a change should update the UI.

For Effect logic, consider useEffectEvent first

When an Effect installs an interval, listener, or subscription, it may need to keep that external connection in place while a callback reads current props or state. React’s useEffectEvent is intended for this case. Its returned function reads the latest committed values when called, without making those values restart the Effect. React documents: “When you call the returned Effect Event function, the callback always accesses the latest committed values from render at the time of the call.”

import { useEffect, useEffectEvent } from 'react';

function ChatRoom({ roomId, theme }) {
  const onConnected = useEffectEvent(() => {
    showNotification(`Connected to ${roomId}`, theme);
  });

  useEffect(() => {
    const connection = createConnection(roomId);
    connection.on('connected', onConnected);
    connection.connect();

    return () => connection.disconnect();
  }, [roomId]);
}

Here, changing roomId changes which room the Effect synchronizes with, so it remains a dependency. The notification can use the latest theme without reconnecting solely because the theme changed. This separation is valid only when a value truly does not need to restart synchronization. If changing a value should reconfigure the external system, keep it in the dependency list.

Effect Event boundaries

  • Call an Effect Event only from an Effect or another Effect Event in the same component.
  • Do not call it during rendering or pass it to a child as a general-purpose callback.
  • Do not add it to the Effect dependency array; Effect Events intentionally do not have stable identity.
  • Do not use it to conceal a real dependency or suppress dependency linting.

These restrictions are part of the official API guidance: Effect Events are for non-reactive logic invoked from Effects, not ordinary event handlers or component APIs.

When a manual callback ref may fit

Outside Effect-local logic—for example, when an API genuinely needs a stable callback identity while its implementation changes—a manually maintained callback ref may still be appropriate. The long-lived callback reads callbackRef.current when invoked, rather than retaining the original callback. The ref must be updated in a safe phase such as an Effect or layout Effect, not assigned during rendering.

import { useEffect, useLayoutEffect, useRef } from 'react';

function useLatestCallback(callback) {
  const callbackRef = useRef(callback);

  useLayoutEffect(() => {
    callbackRef.current = callback;
  }, [callback]);

  return useRef((...args) => callbackRef.current(...args)).current;
}

This example illustrates the mechanism, not a universal hook recipe: whether a layout Effect, a regular Effect, or another design is appropriate depends on when the callback can be invoked and whether an update must be visible before paint. React’s ref guidance cautions against reading or writing ref.current during rendering except for initialization. Prefer a purpose-built API when it matches the invocation context, and make sure stable identity is actually required.

Choose based on what the callback does

Need Approach Key constraint
Render output should change when a value changes State A ref mutation alone does not render again.
Effect-installed logic needs current values, but those values should not restart synchronization useEffectEvent Only call it from Effects or Effect Events in the same component; keep genuine synchronization dependencies.
A non-Effect API needs a long-lived callback to invoke changing logic Manual callback ref, when stable identity is needed Update the ref outside render and read it when the callback runs.
A parent needs a ref to a custom component Component ref API This concerns exposing a ref, not refreshing values captured by a callback.

React 19 ref-as-prop is a separate change

React 19 lets function components receive ref as a prop, so new function components that need to receive a parent’s ref no longer need forwardRef. This changes how a component exposes a ref; it does not keep a callback’s captured props or state current. See the React 19 announcement and forwardRef reference. The documentation says forwardRef is planned for deprecation in a future release, but does not specify a removal date. Keep compatibility needs in mind when supporting React versions before 19; the cited guidance does not provide a complete cross-version migration recipe.
