Quantum algorithms are designed to solve particular computational problems by using quantum operations such as superposition, interference and measurement. They do not speed up every task: any claimed advantage depends on the problem’s structure, how its input is accessed, and what kind of cost is being counted.

This guide introduces the main algorithm families, explains what their theoretical advantages do—and do not—mean, and gives beginners a practical learning path using IBM Quantum Learning’s free lessons and simulators.

What makes a quantum algorithm different?

A quantum algorithm is a procedure that uses quantum states and operations to produce an answer to a defined problem. Its building blocks include qubits, gates and measurements. Superposition lets a state represent combinations of possibilities, while interference can increase or reduce the likelihood of particular measurement outcomes. Measurement turns the final quantum state into classical information.

That description does not mean a quantum computer simply tries every answer at once and reads out the right one. Measurement yields limited information, and an algorithm must be designed so that its operations make useful outcomes more likely. The relevant question is not whether a computer is quantum, but whether a particular algorithm can exploit the structure of a particular problem.

Many introductory results use a query model: an algorithm is given access to a black-box operation, often called an oracle, and the analysis counts how many times it must query that operation. IBM describes this model as useful for understanding quantum algorithmic ideas, while cautioning that its rigid assumptions do not accurately represent many practical problems. A better comparison asks what the algorithm assumes about its input and counts the costs that matter for the intended use.

How to evaluate a claimed quantum advantage

Before comparing a quantum and classical method, identify what each method is solving and how its performance is measured. A reduction in oracle queries, for example, is not by itself evidence of shorter total runtime on available hardware.

  • Problem and input structure: Is the task unstructured search, factoring, eigenvalue estimation or constrained optimization? These are different problems, and each algorithm relies on different structure.
  • Access assumptions: Does the method require an oracle, a unitary operation, a Hamiltonian or a particular way of encoding the input?
  • Cost measure: Query complexity, gate count, circuit depth, number of measurements and end-to-end runtime measure different things. An improvement in one does not establish an improvement in the others.
  • Output and success probability: What does measurement return? Does the algorithm need to be repeated, or does classical post-processing have to interpret the result?
  • Device constraints: Noise, circuit depth, hardware connectivity and the cost of hybrid classical-quantum iterations can affect whether a theoretical method is useful in practice.

What is Grover’s algorithm?

Grover’s algorithm addresses unstructured search: finding a candidate that satisfies a condition when the candidates have no exploitable ordering or other useful structure. Its oracle marks one or more satisfying states. Repeated Grover iterations use amplitude amplification to increase the chance that measurement returns a marked state.

In the oracle model, the number of queries grows on the order of the square root of the search-space size, rather than the number of candidates required by classical unstructured search. This is a quadratic improvement in query complexity, not a guarantee that a complete search will run faster in practice. The oracle itself must be implemented, and the full cost includes the circuit, repeated operations and measurements, and the comparison with classical hardware.

John Watrous, in his IBM Quantum Learning lesson on Grover’s algorithm, gives a pointed practical caveat: “The quadratic quantum over classical advantage offered by Grover’s algorithm is sure to be washed away by the staggering clock speeds of modern classical computers for any unstructured search problem that could feasibly be run any time soon.” The statement concerns feasible unstructured-search problems and reinforces the distinction between a theoretical query advantage and a practical wall-clock win.

How does Shor’s algorithm work?

Shor’s algorithm is a quantum approach to integer factoring, but its central computational step is not a direct search through possible factors. It reduces factoring to order finding: finding the period of a function associated with the number being factored. Quantum phase estimation helps extract information about that period. The inverse quantum Fourier transform (QFT) is used to turn phase or periodicity information encoded in the quantum state into measurement outcomes that can be processed classically.

This dependency chain matters: order finding is the key reduction, phase estimation supplies information about the order, and the inverse QFT helps make that information measurable. Shor’s algorithm is therefore not a magic factoring circuit that can be judged without considering how its component operations are implemented.

IBM’s official tutorial demonstrates an implementation by factoring 15 and focuses on the implementation and demonstration. A small example illustrates the method; it does not show that current quantum hardware can factor cryptographically relevant large numbers. The tutorial’s displayed requirements are Qiskit SDK 2.0 or later and Qiskit Runtime 0.40 or later. Those are setup details that can change, so check the live tutorial before following its installation steps.

What are quantum phase estimation and the QFT?

Quantum phase estimation (QPE) is a procedure for estimating the phase associated with an eigenstate of a unitary operation. In algorithms such as Shor’s, phase information encodes useful structure—in that case, information related to periodicity and order. QPE is a component used by larger algorithms, not a standalone promise of acceleration for any task involving phases.

The quantum Fourier transform maps amplitudes among computational-basis states in a way that can reveal periodic structure. In Shor’s order-finding process, its inverse is used as part of converting encoded phase information into outcomes that can be measured and interpreted. Understanding this relationship makes it easier to see how the algorithm’s pieces fit together rather than treating “the QFT” as a synonym for factoring.

What are VQE and QAOA?

The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) are hybrid quantum-classical methods. They use a parameterized quantum circuit to produce values, then a classical optimizer uses those values to update circuit parameters. The quantum circuit and classical optimization are parts of one iterative process.

VQE

VQE is used to estimate eigenvalues and has applications that include quantum chemistry. IBM’s tutorial describes it as a relatively short-circuit approach in response to noise that makes meaningful results from deep circuits challenging. The same material cautions that VQE is less scalable, so its usefulness for an application depends on the problem and implementation.

QAOA

QAOA applies a parameterized circuit and classical optimization to constrained optimization problems. IBM presents it as a potential approach, with that potential explicitly conditional rather than established as a general advantage. Its hybrid iterations and sensitivity to hardware noise are part of the practical cost, not details that can be ignored when assessing performance.

How should a beginner learn quantum algorithms?

You do not need advanced mathematics to begin, but basic linear algebra and some Python familiarity are useful. IBM Quantum Learning describes its undergraduate computer-science modules as suitable for introductory study and says that some linear algebra—potentially only 2×2 matrices—is enough to get started. Python helps with experimentation; it is not a prerequisite for understanding every conceptual explanation. The modules include simulator options.
