Yes. Chrome Safe Browsing can check some suspicious password-protected ZIP, 7z, and RAR downloads. Depending on your Safe Browsing setting, Chrome may check archive-content metadata locally or ask to send the archive and its password to Google for a deeper scan. The password prompt is for the archive—not your Google Account.
How Chrome scans a password-protected archive
Encryption can hide an archive’s contents from security scanners until it is opened. Google says Chrome may therefore prompt for the archive password when it considers a download suspicious, so Safe Browsing can examine the files inside. The prompt does not necessarily appear for every encrypted download, and it does not mean Chrome has determined that the archive is malicious. Google’s July 2024 explanation describes password-protected archives as one way cookie-stealing malware has been distributed; protected archives are not inherently unsafe.
The supported examples in Google’s help are password-protected .zip, .7z, and .rar files. Google describes the workflow in both Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing protection, with different data handling in each mode. See Google Chrome Help: Google Chrome blocks some downloads.
What happens in each Safe Browsing mode

These differences are documented by Chrome Help and the Chrome Security team. Enhanced Protection’s deeper scan comes with a disclosure trade-off: the suspicious file and its password may leave your device. Standard Protection keeps those items local, but its metadata check is not the same as opening and deeply scanning the archive.

What to do when Chrome asks for the password
- Check the prompt and download. Chrome’s warning may say, “This file may be dangerous.” Treat that as a reason to pause and consider whether you expected the file and trust its source.
- Know which password it wants. If Chrome asks to inspect the archive, enter the password used to open that ZIP, 7z, or RAR file—not your Google Account password.
- Consider your protection setting. Under Standard protection, the archive and password remain on your device while Chrome checks metadata. Under Enhanced protection, Chrome may send both to Google for a deep scan.
- Do not proceed just to get past a warning. If the download is unexpected, its source is untrusted, or you do not want to disclose the file and password under Enhanced Protection, cancel or remove it rather than opening it.
Chrome’s scan is a security measure, not a guarantee that every threat will be detected. A clean result cannot establish that a file is safe in every circumstance, and the warning does not prove that every password-protected archive contains malware.
What Google’s reported figures mean
Google’s Chrome Security team said in July 2024 that files sent for deep scanning were “over 50 times more likely to be flagged as malware” than downloads in aggregate. That is Google’s reported comparison, not an independent evaluation or a prediction about any individual file. In a February 11, 2025 post, Google reported that Enhanced Protection ran more than 300,000 deep scans of suspicious files per month and kept more than one billion users safe. Is this Chrome Password Checkup?
No. This feature concerns suspicious downloaded archive files and the password that opens an archive. It is separate from Chrome Password Checkup, which checks saved account passwords, and it is not a general password-strength scanner.
