If you mean sending Markdown to a separate ReadMe-hosted documentation project, that is a different workflow with its own action, credentials, and version requirements.
Choose what “sync the README” means
| Approach | Destination | Direction | What to set up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regenerate the repository README | A README file in the GitHub repository | Project data or code generates Markdown in the repository | A push-triggered workflow, a project-specific generation step, and a way to commit or publish the result |
| Upload Markdown to ReadMe | A separate ReadMe documentation project | One-way upload from repository files to ReadMe | ReadMe’s rdme integration, a suitable project-version action, and a securely stored API key |
| Keep repository and ReadMe content synchronized both ways | Both platforms | Bi-directional sync | ReadMe’s bi-directional sync, with the required repository permissions and branch protections considered |
For a README shown on the repository’s GitHub page, use the first approach. ReadMe’s rdme upload is not required to regenerate that file; it serves a separate publishing destination.
Regenerate a repository README on push
GitHub Actions uses the on key to declare workflow events. A push trigger can be narrowed to branches and, optionally, changed file paths. GitHub documents this syntax and the edge cases for push filters in its workflow syntax reference.
- Add a workflow file. Create a YAML file under
.github/workflows/, such as.github/workflows/update-readme.yml. - Choose the push scope. Use
on: pushto run for pushes across branches, or specify abranchesfilter if only particular branches should trigger the job. - Add path filters only when appropriate. A
pathsfilter can limit runs to changes that may affect the generated README. For example, a project might watch its data directory and the generator script. Replace example patterns with paths that match your repository. - Run the project’s generator. Add the commands or action that creates the README from the project’s source data. There is no universal README generator: the correct step depends on how your project produces its content.
- Publish the generated file. Decide whether the job should commit the changed Markdown back to the repository or publish it through another mechanism. A successful generation step alone does not update the repository’s displayed file.
- Check which file GitHub renders. Confirm that the generated file is at the intended README path, especially if the repository contains more than one README.
A minimal workflow skeleton shows the trigger shape, but the generation and publishing steps must be supplied for your project:

# Add your project-specific generation and publishing steps here.
This example runs on pushes to main; it does not generate or commit a README by itself. If you want other branches or every branch, adjust or omit the branch filter. Check the current GitHub Actions documentation for supported workflow syntax and behavior.
Use path filters carefully
Path filters are useful when only some repository changes can affect the generated content. They are not an absolute guarantee that every relevant change will be detected under every push condition. GitHub documents that pushes containing more than 1,000 commits always run, while a diff with more than 3,000 files can affect whether path-filter matches trigger a workflow. If missing an update would leave important documentation stale, consider whether filtering is worth the added risk and complexity.

Make sure the generated README is the one GitHub displays
A repository can contain multiple README files, but GitHub uses a location priority for its displayed README: .github first, then the repository root, then docs. The GitHub README guidance explains this selection. If a new or generated file seems not to appear, check for a higher-priority README before changing the workflow.
Upload repository Markdown to a ReadMe project
For a separate ReadMe-hosted documentation project, ReadMe documents a GitHub Actions workflow using a push trigger, checkout, readmeio/rdme@v10, an upload command, an API key secret, and a target branch. Its current syncing guidance applies to Refactored projects. Legacy architecture requires rdme@9, so verify which architecture your project uses before choosing the action version.

A simplified shape of the documented integration is:
name: Sync docs to ReadMe
on:
push:
branches:
- main
jobs:
upload:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- uses: readmeio/rdme@v10
with:
rdme: docs
key: ${{ secrets.README_API_KEY }}
branch: main
Treat this as a structure, not a drop-in command for every repository: confirm the upload arguments, source Markdown location, target branch, and action version against your project’s ReadMe architecture and the vendor’s current instructions. Store the API key as a GitHub Actions secret rather than putting it in the workflow file.

Decide whether one-way upload or two-way sync fits
The rdme upload flow sends repository files to ReadMe; it is not a mechanism for returning edits from ReadMe to the repository. If you need edits on both platforms to stay aligned, ReadMe describes a separate bi-directional sync option. Account for its repository permissions and branch protections when deciding whether it fits your workflow.
