Claude Code’s /compact command summarizes the conversation so work can continue with more room in the context window. Claude Code can also compact automatically as it approaches the context limit. Compaction keeps a recap—not a word-for-word record—so exact details from earlier turns are not guaranteed to remain available.
What Claude Code compaction does
A long session uses context as it accumulates conversation history. Compaction replaces earlier conversation with a summary, freeing room to continue the task. Anthropic describes automatic compaction as happening close to the context limit, but its Help Center does not publish a fixed trigger threshold or the complete summary instructions. That makes “forgetting” a useful shorthand, but not a precise description of a documented item-by-item process. Once earlier turns are represented by a generated summary, their exact wording and detail are not assured. The available Claude Code documentation does not establish a definitive list of which instructions, rejected approaches, tool results, or other details are always retained or always dropped.
What to expect after compaction
- The conversation is summarized so the current task can continue with more context available.
- The summary stands in for earlier history; it is not a guarantee that the complete exchange remains in active context.
- Anthropic does not document a stable numeric threshold for automatic compaction in the cited Help Center page. Treat exact percentages or token counts found elsewhere as unverified unless a current official Claude Code source specifies them.
- No official retention percentage or compaction-specific statistic is established in the cited documentation.
Choose the right context-management action

The distinction between the first two choices is important: compact when the same task should continue with a recap; clear when you want a fresh chat for a different task. The Help Center’s description of these commands is in Models, usage, and limits in Claude Code.

Keep important instructions outside the chat
If a requirement must remain exact—such as a project convention, a constraint, or a decision the agent should not revisit—put it in a durable project artifact instead of relying only on an old turn surviving compaction. Anthropic recommends CLAUDE.md for project context. Its guidance says edits made during a session are picked up at the next /compact or /memory opening, or otherwise in the next session. For work that changes code, use version control as a separate safeguard. A summary can help Claude Code continue, but it is not a substitute for a recoverable code state. Anthropic’s Prompting best practices recommends Git for state tracking and checkpoints.

Resume a session—and keep API compaction separate
The Claude Code CLI reference documents ways to continue the latest conversation or resume a conversation using its session ID. Command behavior can be version-sensitive, so consult the reference alongside the installed claude version when you need exact invocation details: CLI reference.
Do not infer Claude Code’s internal behavior from Anthropic’s API compaction feature. The API documentation describes separate on-demand and token-threshold mechanisms marked beta; it does not establish Claude Code’s automatic trigger or its summary instructions. See the Compaction overview.
