Before buying a budget laptop, confirm it can run the software you need, then compare its memory, SSD storage, screen, weight, battery performance, ports, and support terms. For ordinary writing, browsing, email, video calls, and documents, a mainstream laptop is usually sufficient; specialist courses can require substantially more. Check your school’s requirements before choosing a model or operating system.

1. Confirm the laptop will run your school or work software

Start with the three most demanding tasks you expect to do. ASUS’s laptop buying guide recommends listing them before comparing models: ASUS laptop buying guide. Include required course applications, video calls, large projects, and the browser tabs and documents you tend to keep open.

Ask your school or institution whether it specifies an operating system, required applications, or compatible peripherals. Also check whether it provides software licenses, cloud storage, or loan devices. Windows offers broad compatibility across price ranges, while a Chromebook can work well for basic web-based tasks but may not support specialist desktop applications. Do not assume a course tool will work on a device just because it works in a browser for some users.

  • For writing, email, browsing, routine documents, and video calls, a mainstream laptop is usually enough.
  • Engineering, CAD, design, animation, and media-production courses can have higher requirements. Check the application maker’s requirements and your institution’s advice.
  • Most students do not need dedicated graphics for ordinary study. Consider a dedicated GPU only if required software or demanding creative work calls for it.

The University of Hertfordshire’s student guidance, dated 7 September 2026, discusses Windows and course compatibility in its laptop guide; its advice is useful, but your own institution’s requirements take priority.

2. Choose enough memory and storage for your workload

Memory: 8GB for light use, 16GB if you can afford it

For a budget Windows laptop used lightly, 8GB RAM is a reasonable floor. Choose 16GB if the price difference is manageable, especially if you multitask or expect to keep the laptop for several years. Microsoft’s Canada student guide describes 8GB as suitable for light browsing and most tasks and gives 8GB to 16GB+ as a student range; Hertfordshire calls 8GB a minimum and 16GB a better long-term option. These are recommendations, not a universal requirement for every operating system or workload. Microsoft student laptop guide

Check whether the exact model’s RAM can be upgraded. Some laptops allow it; others have memory soldered to the motherboard, making the purchased configuration effectively permanent.

Storage: prefer an SSD and check capacity

An SSD is preferable for a general-purpose student laptop. A 256GB SSD is a useful starting target; 512GB or more gives extra room for applications and local files. Microsoft describes 256GB to 1TB+ as a student storage range, while Hertfordshire recommends a 256GB SSD or larger. ASUS identifies 256GB as suitable for documents and browsing and 512GB as practical for many students. The right capacity depends on your applications, media files, and reliance on cloud storage. Check upgradeability and the exact listing rather than relying on a product-family name: manufacturers often sell several configurations under similar names. A lower-priced version may have less RAM or storage than a similarly named one.

3. Match the processor and graphics to actual tasks

Processor family names alone do not tell you how a particular laptop will perform. Hertfordshire lists Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 as a minimum and Core i5 or Ryzen 5 as a stronger choice for longevity and experience; Microsoft also places Core i5/Ryzen 5 and related tiers in its mid-level guidance. Compare the exact processor model and generation, alongside memory and the software you need, rather than treating “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” as a performance guarantee.

Integrated graphics are generally enough for ordinary study and office work. Dedicated graphics can matter for certain CAD, 3D design, animation, video-editing, or demanding gaming workloads. If you are considering one for a course, verify the application’s requirements first; a GPU adds cost and may affect battery life and weight.

4. Balance screen comfort, portability, and everyday usability

A screen that looks adequate in a store listing may feel cramped during a full day of reading or writing. Hertfordshire describes 14 inches as a balance between portability and usability. A 15-inch screen can suit design work and detailed editing, but usually adds weight. Compare screen size, resolution, display quality, and the weight of the exact configuration with how far you will carry it each day.

If practical, try the keyboard and screen in person. Check that the keyboard feels comfortable for extended typing and that the display is easy to read in the places you expect to work. ASUS also advises weighing display size, quality, and resolution against portability in its buying guide.

5. Evaluate battery life using realistic tests

Look for independent battery-runtime results for the exact configuration, not just a manufacturer’s advertised maximum. Battery capacity by itself does not guarantee a particular runtime. Processor efficiency, screen brightness, apps, performance settings, video calls, and wireless use can all change how long a laptop lasts away from a charger. ASUS explains these variables in its laptop guidance.

Consider your own day: a laptop used mostly near outlets has different battery needs from one carried between classes without a convenient place to charge. A school-device criterion should not be mistaken for a universal consumer target: New Zealand Ministry of Education advice for parents describes a six-hour school-day battery alongside other school-device minimums, but that is specific to its school context. 6. Check webcam, microphone, ports, and Wi-Fi

Inspect the ports on the precise model you plan to buy. Make sure it has the connections you need for charging, USB accessories, an external display, or classroom equipment. If you rely on a wired connection or a particular adapter, verify that before purchase rather than assuming every laptop in a product line has the same ports.

For online classes and meetings, check the webcam and microphone, and confirm Wi-Fi support meets your needs. Hertfordshire includes ports, webcam, and microphone among its student-laptop checks. An optional case or carry bag can be useful for a laptop carried to school; check its dimensions against the device.

7. Read the warranty, repair, return, and update terms

Compare the length and limits of the warranty, whether the battery is covered, how repairs are handled, and the retailer’s return policy. Also check how long the manufacturer promises security updates or support for that model. A low purchase price can be poor value if the laptop does not meet software needs, has too little usable storage, or comes with support terms that do not suit your plans.

The UK Department for Education’s standards for school and college procurement set five years of security patches/support and a three-year warranty for laptops and desktops. Those are institutional procurement standards, not guaranteed terms for consumer purchases. Read the terms that apply to the exact device, seller, and country. UK Department for Education laptop and desktop standards

8. Calculate the real cost before paying

Compare the price of the configuration you actually need, not just the lowest price attached to a model name. Before buying software or extra cloud storage, ask whether your institution supplies Microsoft 365 or other required licenses, cloud space, loan laptops, grants, or discounts. Student offers vary by location, institution, and eligibility; Hertfordshire’s guide names UniDays and the UK Education Store as examples, not universal entitlements. Compare retailers and confirm the offer’s terms before relying on a discount.

Use this checklist to compare shortlisted laptops:

  • Does it run the required course software and peripherals?
  • Does the exact configuration have at least 8GB RAM, with 16GB preferred if affordable?
  • Does it have an SSD with enough capacity for your files and applications?
  • Are processor and graphics capabilities appropriate for your actual workload?
  • Are screen, keyboard, and weight comfortable for your everyday use?
  • Are battery-runtime results credible for the exact configuration and your usage?
  • Does it have the webcam, microphone, Wi-Fi, and ports you need?
  • Do warranty, repair, return, and security-support terms make sense for the price?
  • Have you checked for institution-provided software, storage, support, or discounts?
