For the 2026 U.S. lineup, the Ford Maverick is the smaller pickup with a standard hybrid on several trims and a lower published starting price; the Ranger is larger, has a bigger bed, and can tow more when properly equipped. The right choice hinges on whether you value the Maverick’s hybrid option and compact footprint or need the Ranger’s additional bed space and higher towing ceiling.

Which truck has the better powertrain and fuel-economy case?
Maverick: a hybrid option across core trims
Ford lists a 2.5L full hybrid as standard on the 2026 Maverick XL, XLT and Lariat, while EcoBoost configurations are also available. For front-wheel-drive hybrid models, Ford advertises an EPA-estimated 42 MPG city. That figure applies to those models; it should not be treated as the rating for every Maverick configuration.
Ranger: gasoline EcoBoost engines
The cited U.S. Ranger lineup uses EcoBoost gasoline engines: a 2.3L on XL, a 2.3L or optional 2.7L on XLT and Lariat, and a 3.0L V6 on Raptor. Ford’s cited page does not establish a comparable Ranger fuel-economy figure, so a direct MPG comparison cannot be made from these specifications.

How different are the beds?
The Ranger bed is longer and has more published volume. Its 59.6-inch length and 43.5 cubic feet compare with the Maverick’s 4-foot-5-inch length and 33.3 cubic feet. Width measurements also differ: Ford lists overall width separately from the narrower clearance between the wheel wells, so check the latter against bulky cargo that must sit flat.
| Bed measurement | Maverick | Ranger |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4 ft 5 in | 59.6 in |
| Volume | 33.3 cu. ft. | 43.5 cu. ft. |
| Overall width | 53.3 in | 62.4 in |
| Width between wheel wells | 42.6 in | 48.2 in |
| Depth | Not stated on Ford’s cited model page. | 20.6 in |
For a particular load, compare its dimensions with the bed’s usable space, including wheel-well clearance. A bed cover or other accessory must be listed for the truck’s model year and bed; one cover should not be assumed to fit both pickups.

Which can tow more?
Maverick towing limits
Ford rates the Maverick for 2,000 pounds of towing as standard, or up to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package. Ford’s towing guide says that package is required for trailers weighing more than 2,000 pounds. The maximum is not a blanket rating for every Maverick or every load.
Ranger towing limits
Eligible Ranger XL, XLT and Lariat configurations can reach 7,500 pounds with the Trailer Tow Package. The Ranger Raptor is a distinct case, with a listed maximum of 5,510 pounds—not the 7,500-pound figure. Package and configuration requirements apply.

Before towing, check the rating and equipment requirements for the exact vehicle in its owner’s manual and use its labels. Passengers, cargo and accessories affect the remaining capacity; do not treat a model-line maximum as permission to tow that amount with any truck.
Payload figures need a closer check
Ford lists maximum available Maverick payload of up to 1,500 pounds. For the Ranger, Ford’s 2026 page is internally inconsistent: its headline gives 1,767 pounds, while an FAQ answer says up to 1,788 pounds before detailing 1,767 pounds for a 2.3L 4×2. Those figures should not be collapsed into a single unqualified Ranger maximum. Check the payload label on the specific truck and its configuration-specific documentation before loading it.

Prices and trim choices
Ford publishes the following 2026 Maverick starting MSRPs. They are advertised starting prices, not transaction prices, and options or dealer terms can change what a particular truck costs.
| Maverick trim | Advertised starting MSRP |
|---|---|
| XL | $28,145 |
| XLT | $30,645 |
| Lobo | $35,930 |
| Lariat | $38,090 |
| Tremor | $40,645 |
A comparable Ranger starting price was not established in the cited Ford information, so these figures do not support a precise price-gap claim. Price the exact Ranger and Maverick configurations you are considering before comparing budgets.

Trim names also signal different equipment and intended uses, not interchangeable capability. Maverick offers AWD in selected configurations and Advanced 4WD on Lobo and Tremor; Ranger offers 4×4 across trims and includes it standard on Raptor. For specialty or off-road-oriented versions, compare the actual equipment and ratings—particularly towing—rather than assuming that the top trim has the same capacity as other versions.
Quick Recap
How to choose between the Maverick and Ranger
- Choose the Maverick if a hybrid option, Ford’s published city estimate for front-wheel-drive hybrid models, or its published starting MSRP is central to your decision.
- Favor the Ranger if you need the larger published bed dimensions or a higher towing rating and can select a configuration with the required package.
- Compare the exact trucks if payload, four-wheel drive, a specialty trim or a specific trailer is decisive. Check the vehicle labels and configuration-specific documentation, not only model-line maximums.
