For large files and datasets, keep ordinary application APIs in charge of authentication, authorization, and transfer coordination—not bulk byte delivery—when your security and processing requirements allow it. Send bytes through a storage upload path using resumable or multipart transfer where appropriate, and bound concurrency and retries so recovery does not become a surge of extra traffic. If a service must inspect or transform the bytes, stream them through that service with explicit size and capacity controls.
Choose a transfer method based on failure cost and processing needs
There is no universal file-size cutoff for switching methods. The useful questions are how much work a failed transfer should force the sender to repeat, whether parallel throughput is valuable, and whether the payload must pass through an application service. A large transfer also still consumes network capacity; the architecture can reduce unnecessary hops and control bursts, but it cannot make the bytes disappear.
| Method | Recovery and size handling | Network behavior | Best fit and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-request upload | A failed request may require sending the object again. Google Cloud says the choice of upload method should account for how much time you are willing to lose if a failure occurs (Google Cloud: Object uploads). | One transfer request; it does not provide the parallel-parts approach used by multipart uploads. | Use when the object and the cost of restarting are acceptable. It is simpler to coordinate than a multi-part session. |
| Resumable upload | Continue after a communication failure rather than necessarily restarting from byte zero. Google Cloud supports streaming uploads of unknown size with resumable uploads (Google Cloud: Resumable uploads). | Recovery avoids resending already transferred data; it does not itself guarantee higher throughput. | Useful for large or interruption-prone transfers. The sender must retain and protect transfer-session state. |
| Multipart upload | Transfer an object as independently uploaded parts; failed parts can be retransmitted. AWS recommends multipart upload for S3 objects of 100 MB or larger, a service-specific recommendation rather than a general threshold (AWS: Multipart upload in Amazon S3). | Parts can be sent in parallel, potentially improving throughput while increasing simultaneous demand on the link and services. | Useful when part-level recovery or parallel transfer justifies the added session, completion, and cleanup logic. |
| Application-mediated streaming | Bytes flow through the service incrementally rather than requiring one whole-object request or response in memory. Actual buffering depends on the implementation. | Streaming can reduce full-object buffering, but still uses the application’s network path and capacity. Backpressure and concurrency limits must be implemented. | Choose when the service must validate, transform, or otherwise process the content in flight. Define acceptable request bounds; Microsoft’s Azure architecture guidance describes HTTP 413 for requests that exceed them (Microsoft: Web API Implementation). |
Google Cloud’s choice depends on connection and upload speed as well as how much time a failure could cost. Do not treat AWS’s 100 MB S3 recommendation as a universal switch point: choose and test a threshold against your own transfer patterns and failure tolerance.
Separate authorization from bulk transfer where possible
A common design is for the application to authenticate the caller, authorize a specific object operation, and then arrange controlled access to storage. The client transfers bytes to the storage upload path instead of making the application API relay the entire payload. Google Cloud describes signed URLs as a way for a user to access Cloud Storage without holding their own storage-account credentials; the URL’s permitted operation and expiration are set when it is created (Google Cloud: Best practices for Cloud Storage).

A signed URL is a capability, not a substitute for authorization. Treat it as sensitive while valid, scope it to the intended object and operation, and issue it only after checking that the caller may perform that operation. Establish expected metadata such as object identity, allowed size, and content type in the application flow; validate the stored result according to your requirements rather than trusting client-supplied metadata alone. The exact mechanisms for size enforcement and post-upload validation depend on the storage service and application design.
This pattern is not appropriate if policy or product requirements demand that application code inspect or transform every byte before it reaches storage. In that case, stream through the service and plan capacity for that data path.

Build the transfer flow around explicit state
- Authorize and describe the operation. Authenticate the caller, check permission for the intended object action, and establish the object’s identity and allowed size or type before starting a transfer.
- Select the upload protocol. Choose a single request, resumable session, or multipart upload based on failure cost, provider support, expected network conditions, and the value of parallel throughput.
- Transfer through the chosen path. Where the processing model permits, provide narrowly scoped, expiring storage access and let the client send the bytes to storage. Otherwise, stream them through the service with request bounds and backpressure.
- Track progress and recoverable state. Persist enough session or part state to continue according to the provider’s protocol. Protect session identifiers and upload URLs as sensitive values because they may grant access to an in-progress transfer.
- Verify and finalize. Confirm successful completion and check object integrity when appropriate, particularly for long-running transfers. Complete multipart sessions or abort them when no longer needed.
- Clean up abandoned work. Define how incomplete sessions and their retained data are expired or removed, and monitor for stale uploads.
Control concurrency and retries as capacity decisions
Parallel transfers can shorten completion time, but each additional in-flight part consumes capacity. AWS and Oracle both document multipart uploads with parts that may be uploaded in parallel (AWS multipart upload; Oracle Object Storage Multipart Uploads). Neither fact establishes a safe concurrency setting for every workload. Set a cap, then measure how it affects link utilization, storage requests, application capacity, and other traffic before increasing it.
Retries need the same restraint. A retry can recover a transient failure, but immediate repeated attempts or restarting whole objects can multiply traffic during congestion. Prefer the protocol’s resumable or part-level recovery, and use a retry policy that spaces attempts to avoid bursts. Google Cloud specifically advises against closing and reopening an upload merely because progress callbacks have stalled; a quiet callback is not by itself proof that the transfer should be restarted (Google Cloud: Best practices for Cloud Storage).

- Bound concurrent uploads and concurrent parts per upload rather than allowing callers to create unlimited parallel work.
- Set retry limits and delays appropriate to the service’s recovery protocol; avoid synchronized immediate retries across many clients.
- Distinguish a stalled progress report from a confirmed transfer failure, and consult session status or protocol guidance before restarting.
- Observe transfer duration, retries, failed parts, throughput, and competing network or service load so limits can be adjusted using measured capacity.
When bytes must pass through an application API
Streaming is useful when validation or transformation must happen in the service path, because it lets the implementation process data incrementally rather than first assembling an entire object in memory. It is not an automatic constant-memory guarantee: framework buffers, transformation stages, queued work, and the number of simultaneous requests all affect actual resource use.
- Set a maximum accepted request size and reject requests beyond it. Microsoft’s API implementation guidance identifies HTTP 413 as the response for a request that exceeds acceptable bounds (Microsoft: Web API Implementation).
- Apply backpressure so a slow downstream destination does not cause unbounded buffering upstream.
- Limit concurrent streams and account for CPU and memory consumed by validation or transformation, not just network throughput.
- Define cancellation behavior for clients that disconnect, and ensure incomplete downstream writes are not treated as completed objects.
HTTP chunking by itself does not define your application’s memory ceiling, request-size policy, or concurrency limit. Those controls belong in the actual server, framework, and service configuration.

Account for provider-specific session behavior and cleanup
Amazon S3
AWS multipart upload stores an object from independently uploaded parts, so a failed part can be sent again without retransmitting successful parts. AWS recommends multipart upload for S3 objects at least 100 MB in size; the recommendation is specific to S3 and is not a universal boundary (AWS multipart upload documentation).
Google Cloud Storage
Google Cloud resumable upload sessions continue after communication failure, and a session is pinned to the region in which it is initiated. Initiate close to the target bucket when using this service, and account for integrity checking on long-running transfers (Google Cloud: Resumable uploads).

Oracle Object Storage
Oracle documents multipart uploads and parallel part transfer. Its guidance also recommends lifecycle cleanup of uncommitted multipart uploads to avoid ongoing storage charges for abandoned parts (Oracle: Object Storage Multipart Uploads).
Azure API paths
The cited Microsoft guidance addresses API request implementation and oversized-request handling, including HTTP 413. It does not establish a provider-neutral upload threshold or a specific Azure storage upload protocol; select storage-transfer details from the documentation for the Azure service and configuration you use (Microsoft: Web API Implementation).
Place transfers near storage and measure the whole path
Region placement can affect latency and network use, and for Google Cloud resumable sessions the initiation region determines the session region. Keep initiation near the bucket for that service, and measure cross-region traffic and latency in your deployment rather than assuming that a transfer design behaves the same everywhere.
Capacity testing should reflect realistic object sizes, interruption patterns, concurrent clients, and other traffic sharing the link. Increase concurrency cautiously and verify both successful completion time and impact on unrelated services. Compression may reduce bytes for some payloads, but trades network use against processing work; its value depends on the data and workload.
