Python does not think like a person, but control flow lets you write instructions that choose between options and repeat work. Start with if for decisions, use for to process available items, and use while when repetition depends on a condition.
What “teaching Python to think” means
In Nelly Triza’s beginner article, “Finally Teaching Python to Think 🐍,” published on DEV Community on September 20, 2026, the learning path moves from printing output to conditionals and loops. “Think” is a useful metaphor for giving a program rules; it does not mean Python reasons as a human does.
As Triza puts it: “Programming isn’t just about writing code. It’s about learning how to break a real-world problem into instructions a computer can understand.” Control flow is one way to do that: describe a choice, a repeated task, or a point at which repetition should stop.
How Python makes a decision with if, elif, and else
An if statement evaluates a condition and runs its indented block when the condition is true. Add elif to test another condition if earlier tests did not match. An optional else block runs when none of the preceding conditions matched.

print("Below C")Python checks these branches from top to bottom and runs the first matching branch. The order matters: if a broad condition comes before a narrower one, the narrower branch may never be reached. Comparison operators such as ==, !=, <, <=, >, and >= help express those tests. Use and when both conditions must be true, or or when either one is enough.
When to use nested conditionals
A conditional can sit inside another conditional when the second question only matters after the first answer. For example, a program might first check whether a username was supplied, then decide what to do next. This can make dependencies between decisions explicit, but deeply nested code becomes harder to scan; combine clear conditions or restructure the logic when nesting grows.

A login illustration that compares a supplied password with a password literal written directly in the code is only a demonstration of a conditional inside another conditional. It is not production authentication guidance: embedding a real password in source code exposes a secret and does not provide a secure login system.
How a for loop processes multiple values
A Python for loop takes items from an iterable, in its order, and runs the indented body for each item. It is a natural fit when you want to apply the same operation to every value in a list or another iterable.

print(total)Here, total is an accumulator: it stores a running result, updated as each transaction amount is processed. The figures are illustrative inputs, not published financial data. The same pattern can add scores, count items, or transform each value in a collection.
When a while loop is the better fit
A while loop repeats as long as its condition remains true. Unlike a for loop that naturally advances through an iterable’s items, a while loop relies on a condition that your program must eventually make false, or on another exit such as break.

For real input, validate the contribution: zero or a negative amount will not move savings toward a positive target, so this stopping condition may never be met. A program using user-provided values should also decide how to handle invalid amounts and whether a final contribution that passes the target is acceptable.

break exits the innermost enclosing for or while loop immediately. Use it when a loop should stop early after a condition is met, such as finding the first matching item. If no early exit is needed, the loop’s natural completion or condition is often clearer.

Choose the control flow that matches the problem
if,elif, andelse: choose among branches based on conditions.for: perform an operation for each item an iterable provides.while: repeat while a condition remains true; make sure the program can reach an exit.break: leave the innermost loop before it would otherwise finish.
These building blocks turn questions such as “What does this code mean?” and “What problem can I solve with this?” into practical exercises: name the decision or repetition in plain language, then express it with the control-flow construct that fits.
