Some Reddit ads have been made to look like breaking financial news while steering people to fake AI-powered investment platforms, according to a June 4, 2026 investigation by Bitdefender Labs. A promoted post, familiar news logo, or polished website is not proof that a publisher endorses an investment. Verify the company and its regulatory authorization independently before sharing money or personal information.

What Bitdefender reported about Reddit investment ads

Bitdefender Labs researchers Andrea Olariu and Emanuel Puscasu reported promoted Reddit posts that impersonated the BBC, the Financial Times, and The Guardian. The posts presented fake financial or breaking-news stories and directed readers to platforms with names including Wencoin STX, Warrior Coin AI, and Nevo Coin. These are names from the reported scam campaign, not legitimate investment recommendations.

Bitdefender described cloned publisher-style websites, fabricated interviews and testimonials, fictional journalists, fake profit screenshots, manipulated banking documents, conspiracy claims, and pressure to act quickly. The report also described at least one video that appeared to be a deepfake news segment. That does not establish that every ad, video, or page in the campaign was generated by AI, or that AI generated all of its material.

Bitdefender’s investigation is the direct evidence for this specific campaign. The cited regulator and law-enforcement sources describe wider risks; they do not independently confirm these particular Reddit ads. The available sources also do not establish how common investment-scam ads are on Reddit or measure Reddit-specific losses.

How to tell whether a Reddit investment ad is suspicious

Assess the offer itself, the identity behind it, and the way it tries to persuade you. No single clue proves fraud, but several together are a reason to stop and verify.

  • It looks like a news article but leads to an unfamiliar domain. A copied logo, layout, or publisher name is not evidence of endorsement. Bitdefender reported cloned publisher designs and invented stories; compare the address character by character with the outlet’s real website.
  • It promises guaranteed, dramatic, or unusually fast returns. The FBI lists dramatic price increases and promises to cover losses among warning signs associated with investment-club fraud. Its April 2025 alert also describes pressure to act quickly.
  • It relies on celebrity endorsements, testimonials, or screenshots. Images of profits and glowing accounts can be fabricated. Bitdefender reported fake profit screenshots and fabricated testimonials in this campaign; a screenshot is not independently verified performance.
  • It claims a secret AI algorithm or says banks and regulators are suppressing the opportunity. Treat extraordinary technology claims and conspiracy narratives as persuasion, not proof. Check for independently verifiable evidence rather than relying on claims in the ad or its landing page.
  • It pushes a countdown or limited registration window. Urgency makes it harder to check the facts. Do not let a supposed breaking event or expiring offer decide whether you send money.

How to check whether an investment platform is legitimate

  1. Leave the ad and find the company independently. Do not use the ad’s link as your only source. Search for the firm by name and locate its official site through independent results.
  2. Check the domain and publisher identity. Compare the address carefully with the genuine news outlet or company site. Look for misspellings, extra words, or a different domain ending. A familiar design can be copied.
  3. Verify authorization with the relevant financial regulator. Check whether the firm is authorized to offer the specific service in your country. Bitdefender recommends checking licensing, and the European Securities and Markets Authority’s May 2025 letter to large online platforms called for measures to prevent promotion of unauthorised financial services. The letter signals regulatory concern; it is not a finding that a particular Reddit ad broke the law.
  4. Look for independent evidence behind performance claims. Do not treat testimonials, a news-style page, or screenshots as proof of returns. If you cannot verify the company, its authorization, and its claims from independent sources, do not transfer money.
  5. Pause if the seller discourages checking. A demand for immediate payment, secrecy, or trust in an “AI” system instead of verifiable information is a reason to stop the conversation.

How to report a suspicious ad on Reddit

  1. Open the ad’s overflow menu (the three-dot menu).
  2. Select Report, choose the reason that best fits, and submit the report.

Reddit’s reporting guidance says reporting also hides the ad and future ads from that advertiser account for you. This controls what you see; it is not a determination that the advertiser has been found guilty of fraud.

What to do if you clicked, paid, or shared account details

  • If you sent money or disclosed financial information, contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider promptly. Ask what steps are available to secure accounts or attempt to stop or dispute a transaction.
  • Report the incident through official channels. In the United States, the FBI directs suspected investment-fraud victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); the Federal Trade Commission accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These are US reporting channels. Elsewhere, contact your local financial regulator, consumer-protection agency, or law-enforcement authority.
  • Be wary of anyone who offers to recover your money for an upfront fee. The FTC says some investment-scam victims reported further losses to people claiming they could retrieve funds for a fee.

What the broader scam figures do—and do not—show

Social-media scam figures provide context, but they are not Reddit-specific. In an April 2026 data spotlight, the FTC said that, among people who reported losing money to a scam in 2025, nearly 30% said it started on social media; reported social-media scam losses reached $2.1 billion. The FTC also reported $1.1 billion lost to scams that people said began on social media—more than half of all money reported lost to scams initiated there. These figures come from FTC Consumer Sentinel Network reports, cover reported losses rather than all losses, and do not identify Reddit’s share.

The FBI said in 2025 that it had seen at least a 300% increase in victim complaints referencing ramp-and-dump stock fraud compared with 2024. That figure concerns complaints observed by the FBI, not all fraud or Reddit ads. Reddit separately said user exposure to spam fell by about 20% from January through March 2026 compared with the previous three months; that broad company metric does not measure investment-scam prevalence or validate the campaign Bitdefender described.
