The feature is also known as Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI) and requires hardware virtualization enabled in UEFI or BIOS.
What Memory integrity does
Memory integrity uses hardware virtualization to create an isolated environment that helps protect kernel code. This makes it harder for malicious programs to use low-level drivers to hijack a PC. The setting is available on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, but the controls shown can vary by Windows version and installed hardware. Microsoft’s Device security guidance describes the feature and its location.
Turn on Memory integrity
- Open Windows Security. You can also go through Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device security. Windows 10 may use different top-level Settings labels.
- Select Device security, then choose Core isolation details.
- Find Memory integrity and switch it on. Follow any prompt to restart; the change takes effect after a restart.
The Windows Security page and available controls differ by Windows version and installed components. Microsoft also documents the navigation in its device protection instructions.
If Memory integrity will not turn on
Check hardware virtualization
Memory integrity requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI or BIOS. Many PCs already have it enabled. To reach UEFI from Windows, use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In Windows 10, the route is Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Firmware menus vary by manufacturer, so use the PC maker’s instructions to find and enable the virtualization setting. See Microsoft’s guidance on accessing UEFI settings.

Resolve an incompatible driver warning
If Windows names an incompatible driver, first check Windows Update and the device or driver manufacturer for a compatible update. If no compatible driver is available, Microsoft says it may be possible to remove the device or app that uses it. Do not delete driver files manually; use the supported update or uninstall options. The driver may support a device or app function that will stop working if it cannot load.
What switching Memory integrity off means
Turning the setting off may allow a blocked driver to load, but it removes this kernel-code protection. On a Secured-core PC, disabling Memory integrity takes the device out of its Secured-core state. Changes require a restart to take effect, and a device or app function dependent on the driver may not work. Consider switching it off only when necessary to restore a required function and after weighing that security and functionality tradeoff.
