If a replacement plugin throws during setup, the host should not have to choose between a broken upgrade and losing the working plugin. Moult’s proposed answer is to prepare a new generation privately, verify it, and publish it only at a commit point. Until then, the old generation keeps serving. That is a lifecycle guarantee—not a sandbox, a general hot-reload system, or a promise that plugin state will survive.

Why replacing a plugin is more than assigning a new value

In a long-running editor, CLI daemon, developer tool, or agent host, a plugin may provide capabilities that other parts of the application use. A naive replacement can remove the current provider and then begin setting up its successor. If that setup throws, the host has already discarded the working capability: what is still running?

Luke Green frames the problem in his September 20, 2026 article with the question, “What if an upgrade fails halfway through activating?” Green’s article presents Moult as treating replacement like a transaction: keep the current generation active while preparing a candidate, and expose the candidate only after preparation and checks succeed.

The Moult repository README summarizes the design this way: “A replacement is prepared in isolation, committed only after successful preparation, and followed by disposal of the previous generation.”

How Moult’s replacement transaction works

1. Setup the candidate privately

The runtime creates a fresh resource scope for the candidate generation and runs its setup there. The existing generation continues serving during this work. If candidate setup fails, the candidate can be cleaned up without first removing the working generation.

2. Verify before publishing

Before commit, the runtime checks the candidate’s provided capabilities and conflicts. Capabilities staged by the candidate remain hidden from observers, so an incomplete candidate does not become the host’s active provider simply because setup began.

3. Commit the replacement

On success, the runtime publishes or swaps to the new generation at a single commit boundary. The repository describes this commit as atomic for staged capabilities. The documented protection applies to failures before that boundary: a failed candidate should leave the prior generation active and usable. There is no rollback after commit.

4. Dispose the old generation

After publication, the previous generation is disposed and its owned resources are released in reverse acquisition order—last in, first out. If disposal has trouble after commit, the replacement remains in place; the failure is recorded for inspection rather than treated as a reason to undo the commit.

What the transaction protects—and what it does not

  • It protects the active generation from a failed preparation. A setup or verification failure before commit should not displace the current generation, according to the project’s design and the tests reported by Green.
  • It controls capability visibility and lifecycle. The runtime coordinates staged capabilities, resource ownership, and cleanup around replacement.
  • It does not reverse arbitrary side effects. Code that writes to an external service, file, or other system is not made transactional merely because it runs inside a plugin lifecycle.
  • It does not automatically migrate state. Each generation receives a fresh scope; in-memory handles do not carry over. React component state, in particular, is not promised to survive. Durable state belongs behind a capability supplied by the host.
  • It does not rebind active dependents in v1. The project says provider replacement is rejected when active dependents would need rebinding, rather than silently switching those consumers to a new provider.

The repository explicitly describes plugins as trusted code: Moult is not a sandbox and does not enforce plugin permissions. It is also not a module loader or bundler, and it does not rely on a shared global runtime registry. Those boundaries distinguish lifecycle coordination from code delivery and isolation.

How this differs from HMR and module-sharing tools

Green discusses naive registries, Cordis, Vite HMR, and Module Federation as points of comparison, but the relevant question is narrower than which tool is “better”: what happens if a candidate fails during replacement, when are its capabilities visible, and who owns cleanup? Moult’s described role is lifecycle transaction handling. Vite HMR concerns updating modules, while Module Federation concerns sharing modules across builds; neither category should be treated as interchangeable with a plugin lifecycle runtime on the basis of this article alone.

For a host choosing an approach, evaluate the actual failure path: whether the old provider remains available after failed setup, whether staged capabilities stay hidden before commit, how disposal errors behave, and whether dependents are rejected, rebound, or explicitly handled through another mechanism.

What the reported tests and benchmark establish

Green reports nine replacement-transaction tests covering failed setup, failed validation, disposal ordering, and resource cleanup. The article also reports 145 tests run in both Node and a DOM environment, for 290 runs, and 15 documented invariants. These are figures reported by the article’s author, not independently verified test runs.

Green’s benchmark scenario averaged about 16 ms for a sequence that included installation, one failed replacement, and 100 successful replacements. The article estimates roughly 0.16 ms per successful replacement in that environment; 16 ms is the average for the full scenario, not the cost of one replacement. Green calls the result environment-specific, not a performance promise.

The article’s comparison harness included a naive registry, Cordis 4.0.0-rc.9, and @moult/runtime 0.1.1. In that harness, Green reports that Moult survived the failed-upgrade scenario without leaked resources while the other rows did not. That is a result for the article’s particular harness, not a general comparison of those projects or a claim about every configuration.

Project status and practical fit

There is a status discrepancy in the published materials: Green’s article refers to @moult/runtime 0.1.1 and invites readers to install it, while both the repository README and the runtime package README say the runtime is implemented or packaged but not yet released. Those documents do not establish current package-registry availability, so check the registry before relying on an installation instruction.

Moult’s approach is most relevant when a host needs to replace trusted plugins without removing the working generation before the candidate is known to be ready. It is not a substitute for a sandbox, loader, state-migration strategy, or dependent-rebinding design; those are separate concerns the host must address.
