Clicks and pops at an audio edit usually happen because the waveform changes abruptly—for example, when a nonzero sample is cut directly to silence. Try moving the edit to a zero crossing; if that is impractical, add a short fade to an exposed clip edge or a crossfade where clips meet. Then listen to the edit in context: neither a zero crossing nor an automatic fade guarantees a clean result.

Why an audio cut clicks

A waveform has an amplitude at each sample. If an edit suddenly changes that amplitude—such as cutting from a nonzero value to silence—the abrupt transition can be heard as a click or pop. The same problem can occur where two clips meet if their waveforms do not join smoothly.

A zero crossing is a point where the waveform passes through its center line. Putting a trim, split, or selection boundary near one can reduce the abrupt change. For guidance on how edits and fades work, see the Audacity Manual’s Fade and Crossfade guide.

A practical workflow for fixing clicks

  1. Find and hear the edit. Zoom in around the cut, then play the area in context so you can identify the click without losing the surrounding sound.
  2. Try a zero crossing or quieter point. If the timing and performance allow, move the edit near a zero crossing or another low-amplitude region. Use your editor’s zero-crossing snap or selection command if available.
  3. Fade an exposed edge. If the cut is at the beginning or end of a clip that meets silence, apply a short fade-in or fade-out.
  4. Crossfade a join. If two clips meet, overlap or crossfade them using your editor’s available controls. Adjust the length and curve by listening rather than relying on a preset.
  5. Protect important attacks. Keep fades only as long as necessary. A longer fade can soften a transient, the start of a spoken word, or the onset of a musical phrase.
  6. Audition the result. Replay the edit in context and, when relevant, listen to the exported file. A waveform that looks smooth is not proof that the join sounds right.

Choose the fix for the kind of edit

Edit situation First approach What to watch for
A cut that can move without harming timing or content Move it near a zero crossing or quieter region. The sound may still click if the surrounding waveforms do not join smoothly.
An exposed clip start or end Apply a short fade-in or fade-out. Too long a fade can weaken an attack, consonant, or phrase onset.
Two clips meeting Try a crossfade and adjust its length and curve by ear. Choose a fade that smooths the join without changing the intended sound.
A stereo edit Listen to both channels and the combined result; consider a quieter point or fade if needed. The left and right channels may cross zero at different sample positions, so one shared edit time may not be a zero crossing for both.
A click at the beginning or end of the full track Check for DC offset and use the editor’s removal option if appropriate. A click at a track boundary may not be explained by a visible edit alone.

Account for stereo and DC offset

In stereo, the left and right channels can cross zero at different times. A boundary snapped to a zero crossing in one channel may therefore still produce an artifact in the other. Check both channels and the combined playback; if needed, choose a quieter point or use a fade or crossfade.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

DC offset can also contribute to clicks at the start or end of a track. The Audacity Manual’s editing FAQ notes that DC offset may cause a click at a track boundary. In Audacity, its suggested early workflow after recording or importing is to use Normalize with “Remove any DC offset” checked. In another editor, look for its corresponding DC-offset removal control and consult that version’s manual.

Logic Pro

In the Tracks area, use the Snap pop-up menu to enable “Snap Edits to Zero Crossings” for edits in the Audio Track Editor. Apple says this snaps trims and splits to zero crossings to help avoid unwanted sounds at edit positions. Availability depends on Logic’s complete-features setting. See Apple’s Logic Pro Audio Track Editor guide.

Audacity

The Audacity manual covers zero-crossing placement, fades, and crossfades between adjacent clips on one track or clips on separate tracks. Its editing FAQ also suggests trying a short linear fade, a crossfade, or Repair when appropriate. Exact controls can vary by version; consult the Fade and Crossfade guide and editing FAQ.

Ableton Live 12

In Arrangement View, Live 12 documents clip fades and crossfades. Its optional “Create Fades on Clip Edges” setting applies default 4 ms fades to eligible clip edges; adjacent clips can receive default 4 ms crossfades. Those are Live 12 defaults, not a universal fade-length recommendation. See the Live 12 Arrangement View manual.
