LUCIFER was the name used for the Large Binocular Telescope’s first near-infrared camera and spectrograph. The observatory now calls the paired instruments LUCI1 and LUCI2. They capture near-infrared images and split light into spectra, helping astronomers study objects that are difficult to examine in visible light.

What is LUCIFER on the Large Binocular Telescope?

LUCIFER was the historical name for an infrared instrument installed on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona. The observatory’s current name for the instrument pair is LUCI1 and LUCI2. Each is an infrared multi-mode instrument used for imaging and spectroscopy, according to the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory’s LUCI overview.

Imaging records how light is distributed across a patch of sky. Spectroscopy separates that light by wavelength, producing a spectrum that astronomers can analyze for features associated with an object’s properties. LUCI supports long-slit spectroscopy, which examines a narrow strip of a scene, and multi-slit spectroscopy, which can collect spectra from multiple selected objects in the field.

What can the LUCI infrared camera and spectrograph see?

The observatory lists a seeing-limited field of view of four arcminutes square for each LUCI unit. Its stated wavelength coverage extends to 2.44 microns, with the short-wavelength limit differing by instrument: 0.89 microns for LUCI1 and 0.96 microns for LUCI2. These are near-infrared wavelengths, beyond the visible range humans can see.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

“Seeing-limited” describes observations affected by atmospheric blurring rather than corrected to the sharper performance available through adaptive optics. The LBT also has adaptive-optics capabilities, but the four-arcminute-square field above is the LUCI seeing-limited specification; it should not be treated as a field-size claim for every observing mode.

How does infrared spectroscopy help astronomers see through dust?

Dust can obscure visible light from astronomical objects. Some near-infrared light passes through dust more readily, so infrared observations can reveal emission from regions that are difficult to study in visible wavelengths. A spectrum adds information beyond an image: by measuring light across wavelengths, astronomers can investigate spectral features rather than only an object’s apparent brightness and position.

The 2010 installation report described laser-cut slit masks for multi-object spectroscopy, allowing astronomers to gather spectra from several targets in one field. That report also described cooled instruments, cameras and filters; those are historical configuration details and should not be assumed to describe every current setup. In that report, LBT Director Richard Green said: “Together with the large light gathering power of the LBT, astronomers are now able to collect the spectral fingerprints of the faintest and most distant objects in the universe”.

When did LUCI1 and LUCI2 reach the telescope?

The two instruments arrived in stages, rather than as one simultaneous upgrade. The observatory’s history page says LUCI1 arrived at the telescope in 2009 and was released to users in 2010; LUCI2 was installed in 2013. The 2010 news story’s forecast that the second unit would arrive in early 2011 was not the final milestone.

Is the Large Binocular Telescope still the world’s largest optical telescope?

The phrase “world’s largest optical telescope” appeared in the 2010 news context, but the cited observatory pages do not establish a current world ranking. A comparison depends on what “largest” means: the diameter of an individual mirror, total light-gathering area, interferometric baseline, wavelength coverage or instrument capability.

The LBT has two primary mirrors, each 8.4 metres in diameter, mounted together. The observatory describes binocular observing and interferometric observations using a 22.8-metre edge-to-edge baseline. That baseline is not the diameter of either mirror and is not interchangeable with a measure of collecting area. The observatory’s observing access page describes telescope capabilities; access is limited to observatory members.
