Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a personal setup or small installation, start with the fewest services that meet your needs—not an elaborate stack by default. Open WebUI’s quick start documents a single container that bundles Open WebUI and Ollama, while also offering a separate Open WebUI container that can connect to Ollama on another server. That makes “one process, not six” a useful starting hypothesis, not a universal rule: split services when you need their separate scaling, hardware, or operational boundaries.
What “one process” means for a self-hosted AI stack
It does not necessarily mean that every part of an AI system is literally one operating-system process. In this context, it means starting with a compact deployment rather than independently installing and managing a collection of services before you need them. The interface, model runtime, database, cache, vector store, and file storage are distinct concerns; a small installation may not need each as a separately operated service.
Open WebUI documents deployment as a Python process, a container, or a Kubernetes pod. Those approaches differ in orchestration, scaling, and operation, but the documentation does not establish that one is universally faster, cheaper, safer, or more reliable. The practical question is which components your use case actually requires and how you intend to operate them. Open WebUI’s deployment documentation describes the available patterns.
Can you run a local AI stack in one container?
Yes. Open WebUI’s official quick start provides a bundled Open WebUI-and-Ollama container example, as well as a CPU-only example. It also shows a separate Open WebUI container for connecting to Ollama hosted on another server. These are documented starting configurations, not performance comparisons. Follow the current commands and prerequisites in the Open WebUI quick start; choose the GPU or CPU example that matches your environment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A bundled container can reduce the number of separately configured components in a small setup. A split arrangement lets the interface and inference runtime live on different machines or be managed independently. The sources do not quantify the trade-offs, so choose based on the hardware and service boundaries you need rather than assuming one arrangement will be faster or simpler in every environment.
Where does inference happen?
The interface’s location does not determine where a model runs. Open WebUI can connect to local model servers, such as Ollama or vLLM, or to hosted APIs. Inference happens at the endpoint you configure, so prompts sent to a hosted provider leave your local machine even if Open WebUI itself is self-hosted. Check the selected provider and endpoint when deciding what “local” means for your setup. See Open WebUI’s provider and connection documentation.

Local inference runs on local hardware. Open WebUI’s examples include both GPU-enabled and CPU-only configurations; a dedicated GPU is therefore not a universal prerequisite. Whether local hardware suits a particular model and workload depends on requirements not quantified by these deployment examples.
How to choose a deployment pattern
| Pattern | What it suits | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Bundled Open WebUI and Ollama container | A personal setup or small installation that wants the interface and local runtime together. | Choose the documented GPU-enabled or CPU-only example appropriate to your system. The sources provide instructions, not a measured simplicity or performance result. Open WebUI quick start. |
| Open WebUI container connected to a separate Ollama server | A setup where the interface and inference runtime should be on different machines or managed separately. | Configure the connection to the other server and account for the additional service boundary. No comparative benchmark is stated. Open WebUI quick start. |
| Docker Compose integration with Docker Model Runner | An installation using Docker’s documented Model Runner integration with Open WebUI. | Use the documented Compose configuration and Docker’s requirements; this is another deployment option, not evidence that it outperforms the alternatives. Docker Model Runner and Open WebUI. |
| Python process, managed container platform, VM-based process, or Kubernetes | Operators choosing a deployment around their orchestration and scaling needs, including distributed installations. | These are different operational patterns. Open WebUI’s documentation does not provide a universal threshold at which one becomes preferable. Open WebUI deployment documentation. |
When separate services become necessary
You need multiple application replicas
Scaling Open WebUI beyond a single application instance changes the supporting architecture. Its enterprise deployment guide lists PostgreSQL, Redis, a vector database safe for multi-process use, and shared file storage as backing requirements for multiple Open WebUI replicas. These are not prerequisites for every personal single-instance deployment; they are requirements described for the multi-replica arrangement. Consult the Open WebUI enterprise deployment guide before designing one.

You need independent hardware or service management
Keeping inference separate can make sense when the runtime needs different hardware, must be upgraded independently, or should have a distinct failure boundary from the interface. Those are architectural reasons to split services, not documented guarantees of better reliability or performance. The appropriate boundary depends on what you need to manage independently.
Your deployment has more users and operational requirements
Before exposing a production deployment to users, Open WebUI recommends configuring authentication, persistence, backups, and monitoring. Treat those as operational work rather than assuming a compact container configuration alone is a complete production plan. The deployment guide covers the documented production considerations.

A practical way to start
-
Choose where inference should run. Decide whether you want a local runtime such as Ollama or vLLM, or a hosted API. The endpoint you select determines where inference happens.
-
Begin with a documented small configuration. For a local single-user or small installation, review Open WebUI’s bundled container and CPU-only examples in the quick start. If the model runtime belongs on another machine, use its separate-container pattern.

-
Add components for a concrete need. Separate the runtime when hardware, upgrades, or service boundaries call for it. Add shared backing services when moving to multiple Open WebUI replicas, following the documented requirements.
-
Prepare for the people who will use it. Configure authentication, persistence, backups, and monitoring before opening a production deployment to users.
The official examples establish that a compact starting configuration is supported; they do not establish a measured optimum for every workload. Choose a larger architecture when its scaling or operational needs justify the added components.
