Generative engine optimization (GEO) is work intended to improve a site’s visibility in AI-generated search experiences. In 2026, the evidence supports a measured approach—not a universal checklist or a promise of citations. Google says optimizing for its generative Search features is still SEO, while recent research finds that generative systems may select different sources from traditional search and can vary across repeated runs.
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO is a name for efforts to make a site more likely to be surfaced, cited, or mentioned in AI-generated search answers. The visibility signal depends on the product: a page may appear as a traditional search result, a cited source in an AI answer, or a brand mention without a linked URL. Those outcomes are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Google recognizes GEO and answer engine optimization (AEO) as terms people use for visibility work in AI search. For its own Search features, however, Google’s position is that the work remains SEO: “From Google’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google’s guide to AI features in Search explains that these features use core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages. It also describes query fan-out: generating related queries to gather additional information.
Does GEO actually work?
There is no established, dependable GEO formula that guarantees a citation or sustained visibility across AI products. Google’s guidance supports useful, distinctive content and foundational SEO—not a claim that a specific formatting trick, word count, or schema will earn placement. Its May 15, 2026 announcement presents the guide as a resource for site owners, SEOs, and developers, with emphasis on content quality, SEO fundamentals, and misconceptions around GEO and AEO. Google’s announcement is official guidance, not evidence of a guaranteed uplift from any tactic.

Researchers have begun testing how visibility in generative answers can be measured. The 2024 KDD paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” proposes impression measures and evaluates text interventions. It also says that optimizing visibility in generative-engine responses remained unclear. The paper is evidence that the problem can be studied, not proof that an intervention transfers reliably between engines or persists over time.
What does the 2026 research show about AI citations?
A SIGIR 2026 study by Grossman, Liu, Chen, Smith, Borcea, and Chen compared traditional Google Search, AI Overviews, and Gemini using a public benchmark of 11,500 user queries. It reports that these surfaces often retrieve different sources and that source selection in generative features can be less consistent across repeated runs. In the study’s comparisons, average source-set Jaccard similarity was below 0.2. That is a study-specific measure of overlap, not a universal score for current platforms.

The same paper reports AI Overview generation for 51.5% of its representative real-user queries and for 65.6% of all queries in its broader benchmark analysis. Those figures use different query samples and measurement definitions; neither is a universal current rate for how often Google displays an AI Overview. The authors’ findings are bounded by the benchmark, collection conditions, and platform versions. See “How Generative AI Disrupts Search: An Empirical Study of Google Search, Gemini, and AI Overviews” for the study and its methods.
The practical implication is that a result observed once is weak evidence of a durable change. A citation may differ with the query wording, date, locale, product, or run. The study does not show that a particular on-page GEO tactic causes lasting visibility gains across platforms.

How should you optimize a site for Google AI Overviews?
For Google Search, begin with the fundamentals in its AI features guidance. Google emphasizes content that is useful, unique, and not commodity material, alongside foundational SEO practices. Applied carefully, that means making pages valuable to readers and accessible to Search—not adding AI-specific flourishes on the assumption that they trigger citations.
- Offer distinct value. Publish information, explanation, or expertise that adds something beyond interchangeable summaries.
- Make the page clear and accessible. Organize information so people can understand it and Search can retrieve it; maintain sound technical SEO foundations.
- Do not treat a tactic as a guarantee. The cited guidance does not establish an exact word count, a required format, or a particular schema as a way to secure an AI Overview citation.
- Keep the scope Google-specific. Google’s advice concerns its Search features and should not be presented as a rulebook for Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or every other generative system.
How can you track whether AI search cites your website?
Google announced a dedicated Search Console view for impressions in generative AI features in Search—including AI Overviews and AI Mode—and generative AI features in Discover. The announcement says those data are included in the overall performance report. This is a Google-specific visibility reporting capability; it is not a cross-platform citation tracker and does not, by itself, establish clicks, conversions, or revenue. See Google’s Search Console announcement.

For broader observation, use a repeatable log rather than relying on a single search. This is a practical measurement routine based on the documented variation in sources, not a validated formula for increasing visibility.
- Define a relevant query set. Include the questions your audience actually needs answered, and preserve the exact wording of each query.
- Record the context. For every observation, note the platform, date, and geography or locale when known. Record whether an AI answer appeared and whether it cited your URL, cited another page, or only mentioned your brand.
- Repeat observations. Recheck queries on different dates and, where relevant, across platforms. Separate changes that recur from one-off appearances.
- Keep metrics distinct. Track traditional Search impressions and clicks separately from AI-feature impressions, citations, and brand mentions. Do not infer business impact from a visibility signal alone.
What GEO metrics can—and cannot—tell you
| Surface or signal | What it indicates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional Search rank, impressions, or clicks | Visibility or traffic in conventional Search results. | Whether a generative answer cites the same URL. |
| Google Search Console generative-feature impressions | Reported impressions for Google generative AI features in Search and Discover, as described in Google’s announcement. | Cross-platform citations, clicks, conversions, or revenue on its own. |
| A cited URL in an AI answer | That the page was selected as a source in that particular observed answer. | Stable visibility across runs, queries, dates, locations, or other products. |
| A brand mention without a link | That the brand appeared in the observed answer. | That the site was cited, received a visit, or generated a business outcome. |
These signals answer different questions. Search Console’s generative-feature reporting can inform Google visibility analysis; manually recorded citations can show what appeared in sampled answers; neither alone proves that GEO work caused a business result.
