Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A Jira workflow condition controls whether a transition is available; a validator checks whether an attempted transition can complete. If a condition fails, Jira hides the transition. If a validator fails, Jira blocks the status change and does not run that transition’s post-functions. Neither rule type universally means “runs your code”—that depends on the specific extension or app.
Condition vs. validator: the practical difference
| Question | Condition | Validator |
|---|---|---|
| What does it decide? | Whether a transition should be available to the user. | Whether the attempted transition’s input or state is acceptable. |
| When does it apply? | Before the user can execute the transition. | After the user attempts the transition but before it completes. |
| What happens if it fails? | The transition is hidden in the normal work-item view. | The work item does not move to the destination status, and the transition’s post-functions do not run. |
| Typical use | Limit a transition to the reporter or to a user with a required permission. | Require or check information entered on the transition screen. |
Atlassian’s advanced work-item workflow documentation describes these distinct roles. In short, use a condition to decide who can see or take a transition; use a validator to reject an attempted transition whose details are not acceptable.
How the rules affect a Jira Cloud transition
Atlassian describes Cloud workflow rule types in this order: Restrict transition, Validate details, then Perform actions. A restriction can hide the transition when its criteria are unmet. A validation rule lets the user select the transition, then blocks completion if the supplied details fail validation. Perform-action rules run after the transition.
This difference matters when you want users to understand what to do next. A condition prevents the transition from being available; a validator is appropriate when users should be able to try the transition but Jira should reject missing or invalid details. Do not assume that every validator displays a particular explanation or correction prompt: that depends on the rule and its configuration. See Atlassian’s explanation of workflow rule types.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does a condition or validator run your code?
That is not a universal distinction between conditions and validators. Atlassian documents custom workflow conditions created through the plugin system, and notes that additional conditions may be available through installed plugins. This establishes that extensions can add custom behavior, not that every condition—or every validator—executes user-written code. The Cloud documentation defines validators by what they check, rather than claiming they always run code.
For a specific workflow rule, check the documentation for the extension or app that provides it. Confirm whether it supports your Jira deployment, what logic it evaluates, and what users see when it fails. Atlassian’s workflow configuration guidance provides the Cloud context for conditions, validators, and plugin extensions.

Check your Jira deployment before choosing an example or app
Jira Cloud and Jira Data Center examples are not automatically interchangeable. Atlassian’s article about requiring a comment during a transition is explicitly scoped to Data Center and describes a third-party validator in that example. It is not evidence that the same app or capability applies to every Jira environment. Check the app’s current compatibility and licensing for your deployment before relying on it. See Atlassian’s Data Center mandatory-comment example.

Which one should you use?
- Use a condition when the transition should be unavailable to some users or until a prerequisite is met.
- Use a validator when the user may attempt the transition, but Jira must check its details or state before allowing it to complete.
- Use a documented app or plugin when you need custom behavior, and verify that its rule type and deployment support match your requirements.
