Q-SETUN is a software project for running balanced-ternary operations and sensor anomaly detection on conventional binary microcontrollers. It does not turn an Arduino into a physical ternary computer. In the project’s example, “code apoptosis” is a metaphor for collapsing a state to zero when a sensor signal crosses a threshold—not an established safety method or proof that a device will fail safely.
What balanced ternary means
Binary digits have two values, 0 and 1. Balanced ternary uses three signed digit values, called trits: −1, 0, and +1. Like other positional number systems, it represents numbers using powers of its base; here the base is three.
The representation has a simple sign property: negation swaps each +1 trit for −1 and each −1 for +1, while zero stays zero. That symmetry is useful to understand the representation, but it does not establish that software emulation is faster or smaller on a binary processor.
The project’s historical framing invokes the Setun computer, which the article and repository describe as built at Moscow State University in 1958 by Nikolay Brusentsov. That account is attributable to those project sources; it is not independently established here by an archival or institutional history source. Likewise, the article’s point that three is closer to e than two is mathematical context, not evidence that a ternary implementation saves memory or execution time on an Arduino.

What Q-SETUN does on an Arduino
Q-SETUN runs as software on ordinary binary microcontrollers. The repository describes it as an integer-only core specialized for one-dimensional sensor anomaly detection, rather than a general-purpose tensor or machine-learning framework. The repository lists Arduino Uno/Nano-class ATmega328P boards and several other MCU families as compatible; that is the project’s compatibility statement, not an independent hardware test.
This distinction matters when judging claims of advantage. A specialized detector and a general-purpose TinyML framework may solve different problems. A useful comparison would need the same input task and data, as well as a named board, clock, compiler and optimization settings, latency measurement method, memory accounting, accuracy results, and tests of noise and failure behavior.

What “code apoptosis” means in the example
The DEV Community article uses “apoptosis” as design language for a terminal zero state. In its convention, +1 represents an active state, −1 an inverted or compensatory path, and 0 the terminal state. The author proposes collapsing a state machine to zero when noise or packet loss exceeds a threshold, then letting that value propagate through the logic.
This is a proposed state convention, not biological apoptosis and not, by itself, a safety case. Before using such a pattern in a real device, define the measured signal, threshold, downstream response to zero, fault reporting, and recovery behavior. For a safety-critical application, assess the complete system and its failure modes rather than treating a ternary value as a substitute for safety engineering.

Are the speed and memory claims established?
No independent performance result is established by the project article or repository. The repository reports “1.0 μs” inference latency for an ESP32 setup, along with an “84-byte” static state and “0 bytes” of dynamic allocation. These are project-reported figures reviewed in 2026, not independently replicated measurements. The article also claims no malloc/free use.
Those figures need their measurement context to support a meaningful comparison: board model and clock, compiler and flags, exact workload, timing method and distribution, and what the memory totals include. The article’s question, “How can emulating trits on a binary CPU be faster than native registers?”, is rhetorical; it is not evidence of a measured speedup. Its general claims that three-way logic avoids branches or yields deterministic timing are not demonstrated across the processor families it names. A branch-misprediction cycle estimate in the article lacks a processor-specific source and should not be treated as a universal fact.

How to install or try Q-SETUN
The project documents more than one route, and they should not be confused. Its repository describes downloading a ZIP, and a PlatformIO route from GitHub; it also names a PlatformIO Registry package. The DEV article says to find qsetun in Arduino IDE Library Manager, while the repository says to search for QSetun once the project is registered. The Arduino libraries documentation landing page does not establish that the library is currently indexed, so check the live IDE or index before relying on Library Manager availability.

- Arduino IDE route: In Arduino IDE, open Sketch > Include Library > Manage Libraries… and search for
QSetun(the repository’s stated search name). If it does not appear, the reviewed documentation does not establish a current Library Manager listing; use the repository’s ZIP instructions instead. - ZIP route: Download the project ZIP from its repository and follow the repository’s installation instructions. Confirm that the installed project version supports your board before compiling.
- PlatformIO route: Use the GitHub installation instructions or the named PlatformIO Registry package documented by the project. This is a separate package-management route from Arduino IDE Library Manager.
- Validate on your target: Compile a minimal example for the exact board and toolchain you plan to use, then test sensor inputs, threshold crossings, zero-state propagation, reporting, and recovery. Project compatibility statements and benchmarks are not substitutes for testing the target configuration.
