AI can generate frontend code—including page layouts, interface components, and functions—and can help edit, test, debug, and explain existing code. The useful distinction is between producing a plausible first draft and delivering a reliable website: the latter still depends on clear requirements, project context, browser testing, and human review.
What AI can do with frontend code
AI coding systems can turn a written description into frontend code, complete code as you type, and help modify an existing interface. Depending on the tool, they can also generate tests, assist with debugging, and explain code. Google Cloud documents these capabilities for Gemini Code Assist, while OpenAI describes using GPT-5.4 for frontend interface work and visual design tasks.
That means a request such as “build a React pricing page with three plans” can produce a starting implementation. It does not mean the generated result will match your product, work correctly in your project, or be ready to deploy without review.
How to get a useful first implementation
Describe the page and its behavior
Give the model the page’s purpose, audience, required content, interactions, framework, and constraints. For example, specify whether a navigation menu should collapse on mobile, what a form should validate, and whether the code must use existing components. A vague request for a “modern website” leaves major design and behavior choices open.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OpenAI’s March 20, 2026 guide says that underspecified prompts can lead models to rely on common patterns, producing generic structures and weak visual hierarchy. A detailed brief makes the output more relevant; it does not guarantee correctness.
Provide relevant project and visual context
For an existing site, include the relevant code, component conventions, framework, and any error or behavior you want changed. If appearance matters, supply a design reference or describe the layout, typography, colors, spacing, and responsive behavior. OpenAI’s guide also discusses image understanding and image tools as ways to support visual direction.

Request a focused revision
Start with an implementation, inspect it, then ask for specific changes: for example, “keep the layout, but make the form error message visible to screen readers” or “adjust the mobile navigation so it does not cover the page title.” Focused requests are easier to check than repeatedly asking for a complete redesign.
How to check AI-generated frontend code
- Review the code in its project context. Check that the implementation uses the required framework and existing conventions, and that it does not omit required states or interactions.
- Run the project and inspect the rendered page in a browser. Check the actual desktop and mobile layouts rather than relying on a code snippet or screenshot alone.
- Exercise the interactions. Submit forms, open menus, follow links, and test the states the page is supposed to support.
- Run appropriate tests and fix failures. AI can help generate tests or debug, but a generated test passing is not proof that the test covers the right behavior.
- Review the final changes before relying on them. Google Cloud warns that Gemini Code Assist may produce output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect, and recommends validating it before use.
OpenAI likewise recommends tool-assisted inspection, testing, and verification. Treat those steps as part of using AI, not as optional polish after the code is supposedly finished.

Can AI build a website or generate React code?
It can generate website interfaces and React code, but “build a website” can mean very different things. A static demo, a component integrated into an existing application, a tested feature, and a production deployment have different requirements. The cited materials establish that AI can assist with generation and iterative development; they do not establish that AI can independently deliver every production application or that generated projects are generally production-ready.
Framework support and editing matter alongside initial generation. The 2025 DesignBench preprint evaluates frontend tasks in React, Vue, Angular, and vanilla HTML/CSS, and includes generation, editing, and repair. Its dataset contains 900 webpage samples across more than 11 topics, nine edit types, and six issue categories. Those figures describe the benchmark, not the number of real-world sites AI can build.

What benchmark claims do—and don’t—show
In 2025, OpenAI reported that its testers preferred GPT-5 to o3 in 70% of side-by-side frontend web-app comparisons. That is a company-reported, model-specific preference result—not a market-wide ranking, a general success rate, or evidence that 70% of AI-generated sites work in production. OpenAI also described its examples as “cherry-picked.”
The available benchmark and vendor materials do not establish what share of frontend code AI can write or how often AI-generated frontend applications are production-ready. A model comparison, benchmark dataset, or attractive example should not be read as a substitute for checking the particular code and requirements you care about.

Choosing an AI coding tool for frontend work
There is not enough comparable independent evidence in these sources to rank current products overall. When evaluating a tool for your project, compare:
- Framework and project context: Can it work with the framework and codebase you actually use?
- Editing and repair: Can it make focused changes to existing code, or is it mainly useful for creating a first draft?
- Visual direction: Can you provide design references or other visual context when the interface needs to match a specific look?
- Testing and inspection: Does your workflow let you run the code, inspect the rendered page, and verify behavior?
- Review effort: How much checking and correction does the generated code require for your task?
Availability can change. Google Cloud’s Gemini Code Assist documentation says that, starting June 18, 2026, Gemini Code Assist IDE Extensions and Gemini CLI stopped serving individual, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra tiers, which were directed to Antigravity and Antigravity CLI. Check the current product documentation before choosing a tool or relying on a specific plan.
