Yes—Playwright can test one user flow through both direct API requests and a real browser. Use API calls to arrange prerequisites when setup is not what you are testing, let the browser exercise the user-visible action, and check the resulting server state through the API when that postcondition matters. Playwright’s API testing guide describes these setup and postcondition uses: API testing.
What does testing one flow at two layers mean?
It means pairing an HTTP-level check with a browser-driven end-to-end (E2E) check around the same behavior. The API layer can prepare data or verify a server-side result; the browser layer checks that the user can perform the action and sees the expected outcome. Playwright says it can provide access to an application’s REST API, and identifies preparing server state before visiting the app and validating server-side postconditions after browser actions as use cases.
This is a design choice, not a Playwright-mandated architecture. Keep the two sets of assertions focused: browser assertions establish what the user experienced, while API assertions establish the endpoint response or server state that matters to the test.
How to combine API setup, a browser action, and an API check
For example, suppose a signed-in user creates a project. If the test is about project creation through the interface, create any unrelated prerequisite data through the API, perform project creation in the browser, verify the visible result, and then query the server through the API if confirming persistence is important.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Arrange prerequisites through the API when appropriate. Use this for state that the scenario needs but is not itself under test. If the setup interaction is part of the behavior you need to verify, keep it in the browser instead.
- Perform the target action in the browser. Navigate to the relevant page and use the UI as a user would, such as opening the project form and submitting it.
- Assert the user-visible outcome. Check the UI result that demonstrates the interaction worked from the user’s perspective.
- Check the server postcondition through the API if it matters. For example, request the created project and assert that the response and returned data match the expected outcome.
The API testing guide demonstrates checking through the API that a resource created in the UI exists. That check complements the browser assertion; it does not establish that the UI was usable or displayed the right result.
Which request context should the test use?
Choose the request context based on whether the API call needs to share authentication cookies with the browser. Playwright documents two related options in its APIRequestContext reference:

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
browserContext.requestorpage.request: Uses the browser context’s cookie jar. This is useful when the API call should act with the browser context’s cookie-based session.- A standalone
APIRequestContext: Has separate cookie storage. Do not assume it automatically shares the browser’s cookie-based login.
Cookie sharing is the distinction documented here; it should not be taken to mean that every authentication mechanism is automatically configured or transferred. Ensure the chosen context has the credentials your application requires.
How do isolation and authentication affect parallel tests?
Playwright Test provides isolated browser contexts and pages, as well as an isolated request fixture. That helps separate test execution contexts, but it does not automatically isolate server-side records or accounts: tests can still interfere if they mutate shared data.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The authentication guide warns that a shared account is a poor fit when tests change server state in ways that can conflict during parallel execution. In that case, use distinct accounts or otherwise ensure each test owns the data it changes. Treat saved authentication state as a credential: Playwright recommends storing it in a git-ignored location because it may contain cookies and headers that can impersonate a test user.
How should the test handle HTTP errors?
Do not treat a completed request as proof that the application operation succeeded. According to Playwright’s Request reference, an HTTP response such as 404 or 503 can still be a successfully completed HTTP request. Explicitly assert the status you expect, then validate response data or the relevant server postcondition. This makes an API failure distinguishable from a browser-visible failure or a failed persistence check.

What should each layer prove?
| Test concern | Browser layer | API layer |
|---|---|---|
| Behavior under test | That the user-facing interaction and visible result work. | That an endpoint behaves as expected or the relevant server state exists. |
| State setup | Use when the setup interaction is itself part of the scenario. | Use to create prerequisites that are not the behavior under test. |
| Authentication | Uses the browser’s session. | browserContext.request and page.request share the context cookie jar; standalone contexts have separate cookie storage. |
| Failure diagnosis | Can reveal a failed interaction or incorrect visible outcome. | Can reveal an unexpected status, response, or server postcondition. |
A useful test name and assertions should make clear which behavior is the point of the scenario. If the browser action is the subject, avoid turning the API postcondition into a substitute for checking the UI; if the endpoint is the subject, a browser flow may be unnecessary.
