Space exploration in 2024 paired tangible milestones with groundwork for missions still to come. NASA’s commercial lunar program delivered science to the Moon, while Artemis teams prepared for future crewed exploration. Europa Clipper launched toward Jupiter’s icy moon, even as NASA’s Mars helicopter Ingenuity reached the end of its mission. ESA’s year also brought a new launcher, planetary-defence work and precision formation flying; meanwhile, the International Space Station remained a busy research laboratory.
What happened in space in 2024?
The year’s milestones spanned several kinds of work: robotic exploration, preparation for human missions, launch capability, planetary defence and research in orbit. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) offer useful institutional views of the year, but their retrospectives are not a complete account of every country’s space program.
| Destination or setting | 2024 milestone | Mission mode and year-end status | Organization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon | Nova-C delivered NASA science to the lunar surface in February; Artemis preparations continued. | Robotic lunar delivery completed; crewed exploration remained in preparation. | NASA |
| Mars | Ingenuity’s mission ended in January after three years and dozens more flights than planned. | Technology-demonstration mission concluded. | NASA |
| Jupiter’s moon Europa | Europa Clipper launched. | Deep-space mission began its journey to study Europa. | NASA |

Did anything land on the Moon in 2024?
Yes. NASA reported that Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander delivered NASA science to the lunar surface in February through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. NASA said the resulting data would help improve understanding of the lunar environment and the precision and safety of future landings. This was a robotic delivery, not a crewed landing. NASA’s 2024 achievements account describes the landing alongside the agency’s other milestones.
Artemis preparation was a separate part of the lunar story
NASA also reported work on Orion integration and testing, Space Launch System (SLS) stacking and launch-pad activities, and crew training. The agency identified nine potential Artemis III landing regions near the lunar South Pole. These were program preparations and planning steps: neither Artemis II nor Artemis III flew in 2024, and the nine regions were potential sites, not a completed landing selection.

What happened to the Mars helicopter Ingenuity?
NASA said Ingenuity’s mission ended in January 2024, after three years and dozens more flights than originally planned. Its mission closure marked the end of a long-running technology demonstration at Mars. It was a completed milestone, unlike Europa Clipper, which began a new journey later in the year. NASA’s annual account includes both events.
Why was Europa Clipper’s launch significant?
NASA included Europa Clipper’s 2024 launch among its major solar-system exploration milestones. The spacecraft is intended to study Jupiter’s icy moon Europa; the launch began the mission’s journey, not its investigation at the destination. NASA describes the launch in its year-end review. The mission should not be described as having discovered life or as a mission to find life.

What did ESA highlight in Europe’s space year?
ESA’s own year-end account emphasized a mix of launch capability, planetary defence and spacecraft technology. Its 2024 year-in-images feature, published December 16, 2024, called out Ariane 6’s inaugural flight, Proba-3’s laser-precise formation flying and Mars Express reaching 25,000 orbits. ESA’s Highlights 2024 publication also spotlights Hera and the Moonlight lunar communications and navigation program.
Ariane 6 and Hera
Ariane 6’s inaugural flight was a European launcher milestone. Hera, meanwhile, was among the planetary-defence work ESA chose to feature in its annual summary. These are distinct achievements: one concerns launch capability, while the other belongs to the effort to study planetary defence.

Proba-3 and Mars Express
Proba-3’s formation flying demonstrated coordinated spacecraft operations, while Mars Express’s 25,000-orbit mark reflected the longevity of an ongoing mission. ESA reported the orbit figure for 2024; it is not a count of new launches or discoveries.
What did astronauts and researchers do aboard the ISS?
NASA’s 2024 ISS review reported that 25 people lived and worked aboard the station during the year. Fourteen spacecraft visited, including commercial resupply missions, and more than 40,000 pounds of investigations, tools and supplies were delivered. NASA described the station as a setting for research and technology demonstrations, including Earth imaging, simulated robotic surgery, metal 3D printing, optical-fiber production and bioprinting. These examples show work conducted in orbit, not technologies already deployed for routine use on Earth. NASA’s ISS research review gives its account of the year.

Metal 3D printing
An ESA metal-printer investigation produced a small stainless-steel S-curve on May 30, 2024. NASA described it as the first metal 3D print in space. The result was a demonstration of in-orbit metal printing; potential future applications should not be confused with something already in operational use.
Optical fiber and other experiments
NASA reported that Flawless Space Fibers-1 produced more than seven miles of optical fiber in space between mid-February and mid-March 2024. Other examples in NASA’s review included simulated robotic surgery, Earth imaging and bioprinting. They illustrate the range of research aboard the station rather than proving that every technique is ready for practical deployment.

What figures and claims did NASA attach to the year?
In its December 2024 release, NASA said its latest Economic Impact Report underscored a $75.6 billion impact on the U.S. economy, society and taxpayer return on investment. This is NASA’s reported U.S. impact figure, not a measure of the global space economy. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson characterized the agency’s year by saying, “In 2024, NASA made leap after giant leap to explore, discover, and inspire – all while bringing real, tangible, and substantial benefits to the American people and to all of humanity,” in the agency’s December 6, 2024 release. That is NASA’s institutional assessment of its work. NASA’s release provides the context for both.
