Tailscale makes self-hosted apps more useful away from home by connecting the server that runs them to approved devices on your private tailnet. Instead of making each service a public internet endpoint, you can reach its dashboard, files, photos or media over that network. Here are six documented examples—not an official ranking or a list of six dedicated Tailscale integrations.

What Tailscale adds to self-hosted apps

A self-hosted app runs on a computer, NAS or server you control. Tailscale supplies the network connection between that host and devices admitted to your tailnet. Its Docker documentation describes remote access to connected services without public exposure; the app itself still handles its own accounts, permissions and features.

That distinction matters: Tailscale is the networking layer, not a replacement for an app’s login system, nor evidence of faster app performance. The examples below are named in Tailscale’s guides, but their deployment patterns vary. Home Assistant has a documented app setup path; the other services are examples of apps you can reach when their host and client are connected appropriately.

Six self-hosted apps that benefit from private remote access

App What it does Useful remote resource Access pattern
Home Assistant Home automation Interactive home dashboard Documented Home Assistant app and Tailscale Serve setup
Plex Media server Personal media library Connect the server host and viewing device to the tailnet
Grafana Dashboards and monitoring Hosted dashboards Reach the service from a tailnet-connected device
Immich Self-hosted photo organization Photo library and shared access Owner or invited users, depending on sharing and access configuration
Nextcloud Files and collaboration Files and related web services Reach the installation over the tailnet
Jellyfin Media server Personal media library Connect the server host and client to the tailnet

Home Assistant: control your home dashboard remotely

Tailscale’s Home Assistant guide describes installing the Tailscale app in Home Assistant, joining the tailnet, enabling MagicDNS and HTTPS certificates, configuring reverse-proxy trust settings, and enabling Serve. Serve makes the dashboard available to tailnet devices. The guide warns that Funnel makes the setup public; if the goal is access only for Tailscale-connected devices, use Serve rather than Funnel.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The setup details can change. The guide, updated in July 2026, notes that Home Assistant 2026.8 moved HTTP proxy settings into the dashboard’s standard settings, so follow the current instructions for your installed version rather than relying on older screenshots or menu paths.

Plex: reach your media server away from home

Tailscale names Plex in both its Docker guidance and its NAS and media-server guidance. The practical benefit is reaching the Plex service hosted at home from a device on the tailnet. This is a networking use case, not a claim that Tailscale changes Plex’s features or improves streaming performance.

Grafana: check dashboards outside your network

Grafana appears as a self-hosted application example in Tailscale’s Docker documentation. If Grafana is hosted on a machine connected to the tailnet, a connected device can reach the service remotely without making the dashboard a public endpoint. The source supports this general access pattern, not a special Grafana integration.

Immich: access and share a private photo library

Tailscale’s sharing guide uses Immich as an example when discussing sharing self-hosted web apps with friends and family. Whether another person can reach the service depends on how you configure tailnet sharing and app-level access; being able to connect to the host does not by itself grant permission to view every photo.

Nextcloud: reach files and collaboration tools

The same sharing guide names a Nextcloud installation as an example of a folder-oriented self-hosted app. Tailscale’s role is to provide a route to the installation from an approved device, including when that device is away from the home network. The guide does not endorse a particular Nextcloud deployment or configuration.

Jellyfin: connect to another self-hosted media server

Tailscale’s NAS and media-server guidance explicitly includes Jellyfin among services that devices on a tailnet can reach. As with Plex, the relevant benefit is private remote connectivity between the server host and a client—not an asserted feature, security or performance advantage over another media app.

How to reach a self-hosted service over a tailnet

For many services hosted on a NAS or another server, Tailscale’s documented pattern is to install Tailscale on the host and on each device that needs to connect. With MagicDNS enabled, use the server’s Tailscale hostname; otherwise, the server’s Tailscale IP address is another documented way to reach it.

  1. Connect the host: install and sign in to Tailscale on the NAS or server running the app.
  2. Connect a client: install and sign in to Tailscale on the phone, computer or other device that needs the service.
  3. Open the service: use the host’s Tailscale hostname if MagicDNS is enabled, or its Tailscale IP address, together with the app’s normal address and port.
  4. For Home Assistant, use its specific guide: configure the integration, HTTPS and reverse-proxy trust settings, then enable Serve for tailnet access.

These steps describe the networking pattern, not a one-click installation recipe for every app. Container networking, NAS operating systems and individual application settings can differ.

Who needs access—and what hardware is involved?

For personal use, connect the devices you own to the tailnet. If friends or family need a shared service such as Immich, use the applicable Tailscale sharing and access controls as well as the app’s own permissions. Do not treat network reachability as authorization to use an account or view data.

A NAS or always-on server can host media and file services, but the right hardware depends on the chosen app and workload. Tailscale’s guides establish the NAS as a supported hosting pattern; they do not compare NAS models, drive configurations or performance tiers.

What this six-app list does—and does not—mean

These are useful examples cited across Tailscale documentation, not the definitive six best apps, a performance ranking or a claim that each app has a dedicated Tailscale plugin. The common advantage is simpler private reachability for a service you host. Your choice among automation, dashboards, photos, files and media should depend on what you want to run and who needs access.

Tailscale’s Home Assistant guide says its Personal plan supports up to six users on a tailnet. That is a vendor plan detail, not an enduring technical limit; check the current Tailscale quickstart and plan terms before relying on it.
