If the problem is navigating a crowded library, look at folder-based tools such as FileBird or Media Library Organizer instead. These solve different problems: folder browsing is not the same as searching filenames, alt text, captions, descriptions, or taxonomies.
The available evidence supports four meaningful options and two additional candidates, but not a defensible ranking of seven current search plugins. Rather than label unrelated cleanup software a search tool or invent a seventh pick, this guide explains what each candidate is documented to do and where important uncertainties remain.
First decide what “search media files” means
WordPress media discovery can mean matching text attached to an item or navigating a library organized into folders and categories. If you remember a filename, caption, or alt-text phrase, prioritize metadata search. If you know where you put a file, folder filters may be faster to use. Some plugins combine aspects of both, but their search fields and locations differ.
- Metadata search: Find attachments by filename, title, caption, alt text, description, or taxonomy values.
- Organization and filtering: Group items into folders or categories, then browse or filter those groups.
Before installing, check the plugin’s current WordPress compatibility, update history, and whether the feature you need is free or paid. The descriptions below come from plugin listings and are not independent test results.

Plugins to consider
1. Media Search Enhanced: broad attachment-field search
The plugin listing says Media Search Enhanced searches attachment ID, title, caption, alt text, description, taxonomies—including taxonomy names, slugs, and descriptions—and media filenames. It describes comma-separated multi-term searches in the Media Library list, the Add Media modal, and other admin screens. See the Media Search Enhanced listing on WordPress.org.
The listing also describes a WordPress Playground demo in which a sample term returns six results compared with three from core search. That is the plugin listing’s demonstration, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of results on your site. Confirm that the current version searches in the specific screen and fields you use.

2. Media Library Assistant: configurable metadata and taxonomies
Media Library Assistant (MLA) is suited to libraries that need a configurable workflow. Its author describes attachment taxonomies, custom-field mapping, searchable and sortable columns, and IPTC/EXIF mapping. Its [mla_gallery] documentation supports PDFs and other MIME types. David Lingren, the plugin’s author and developer, says, “The Assistant is designed to work like the standard Media Library pages, so the learning curve is short and gentle.” That is the author’s description, not an independent usability evaluation. Lingren also cautions that where-used reporting and ALT-text sorting or searching can require substantial database processing; the plugin documents a cache option for some where-used categories. Consider the processing implications if your library is large.

3. FileBird: virtual folders and name search
FileBird centers on virtual folders with drag-and-drop organization. Its listing says users can search file and folder names in the Media Library and while browsing media in the page or post editor. It also says moving an item between FileBird folders does not change its media permalink. Basic folder functions are distinguished from paid advanced sorting and broader integrations, so check the current plan details for any feature you depend on. 4. Media Library Organizer: folder filtering, with advanced search in Pro
Themeisle’s listing describes unlimited folders and subfolders, drag-and-drop management, and folder filtering in several Media Library contexts. It identifies advanced search by filename, alt text, caption, and description as a Pro feature. Verify the current plan and feature boundaries before choosing it for metadata search. 5. Enhanced Media Library: taxonomy filters, with a compatibility warning
Enhanced Media Library’s listing describes media categories and tags, custom taxonomies, configurable filters, MIME-type management, and taxonomy-backed dynamic galleries. It warns against combining the plugin with other plugins that add media categories or folders or manage MIME types because compatibility is not guaranteed. Its WordPress.org compatibility notice says it has not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases. The listing shows a July 15, 2024 release entry and mentions an early beta for version 3.0; check its current status and your site’s compatibility before relying on it. 6. HappyFiles: a folder-organization candidate
The WordPress.org listing identifies HappyFiles as a media folders and file manager plugin. The available listing information does not establish its current search fields, plan limits, or compatibility status, so treat it as a folder-organization candidate rather than a verified metadata-search option. How to choose among them

Choose metadata search when you remember words, not locations
For broad field coverage, compare Media Search Enhanced with MLA’s configurable approach. Check the exact fields you need: a tool that finds folder or file names may not search captions, alt text, or taxonomy descriptions. If your library depends on structured metadata, MLA’s mapping and column options may be relevant, balanced against its author’s database-processing cautions.
Choose folders when your workflow is organizational
FileBird and Media Library Organizer emphasize folder navigation and filtering. Compare where their folders or filters appear in your workflow, such as the Media Library or editor, and whether the search field itself matches filenames only or other metadata. Do not assume that adding folders makes every metadata field searchable.
Check maintenance and compatibility before installing
Compatibility and feature availability can change. Review the current WordPress.org listing and, for commercial features, the plugin’s current plan details. Enhanced Media Library’s stated testing gap is a specific reason to verify compatibility rather than assume it works with a current WordPress release. Avoid combining it with other category, folder, or MIME-type managers unless compatibility has been confirmed.
Why this is not a seven-plugin ranking
The available evidence does not establish seven distinct, current plugins that can fairly be ranked for searching media files. Media Cleaner is listed in the directory, but its described purpose is finding or removing unused or broken media—not retrieving a desired file—so it is not a suitable seventh search recommendation. A list of seven would imply comparable, verified search capabilities that are not established here.
For context, WordPress.org reported more than 70,000 active installations for Media Library Assistant in 2026. That directory count indicates adoption only; it does not establish quality, accuracy, or superiority over other plugins.
