Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Those marks are separate code points that a renderer places in relation to the preceding letters, creating the familiar stacked, crossed, or distorted look. It is not a special font or a separate alphabet.
What makes text look like Zalgo?
Unicode defines combining marks as characters intended to combine with a preceding character, called its base. A combining character sequence consists of a base followed by one or more combining characters. See the Unicode Standard, Version 18.0, Chapter 7 and its discussion of Unicode character structure in Chapter 3.
Many nonspacing marks have no baseline advance of their own. Instead, the rendering system positions them relative to the base glyph and may account for nearby marks and characters. Zalgo text exaggerates this behavior: a string contains ordinary letters with numerous marks placed above, below, or through them. The marks are not necessarily all diacritics, and the exact marks used can vary.
Is Zalgo text a font or a special alphabet?
No. The effect comes from a sequence of encoded characters, not a font file or single special character. A font can affect how the sequence looks, but it does not change the basic explanation: base characters are followed by combining-mark code points. “Zalgo” is an informal name for this deliberately excessive visual use; the Unicode mechanism itself also supports legitimate writing in many languages and scripts. For cultural context on the term, see this secondary overview of Zalgo.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why can the same sequence look different on different screens?
Unicode specifies the characters and their behavior, but it does not require every font and rendering system to draw a dense cluster of marks identically. The result depends on available glyphs, font support, shaping, and rendering implementation. Marks may appear to stack, overlap, pass through letters, or be clipped differently.
The Unicode FAQ explains that an appropriate rendering system can display a base letter followed by multiple marks as a glyph combination, while a font may not support that combination. A conformant system should still preserve and transmit the sequence without distortion. See the Unicode FAQ on combining marks. These principles do not establish a reliable app-by-app compatibility ranking.

Can Unicode normalization remove Zalgo marks?
Not in general. Unicode normalization converts text into one of four standardized forms: NFD, NFC, NFKD, or NFKC. NFD and NFC use canonical decomposition; NFC can then apply canonical composition. NFKD and NFKC use compatibility decomposition, with NFKC also applying composition. Normalization also orders combining marks according to their canonical combining classes. The rules are specified in Unicode Standard Annex #15.
These transformations can reorder marks and may compose some base-and-mark sequences into precomposed characters when the standard defines that mapping. Marks without a possible composition can remain, so normalization is not a visual cleanup or mark-removal operation. Compatibility normalization can also erase distinctions that an application may need to preserve. A specific string’s result depends on its code points and the normalization form applied.

How should an application handle excessive combining marks?
If a product needs to restrict text that renders poorly or is used abusively, it should define an explicit policy for its use case—such as which marks are allowed and how many may follow a base. Normalization can help put text into a standardized form, but it does not decide what a product considers acceptable and is not a universal sanitizer.
That distinction matters because combining marks are valid text, not inherently malformed input. Treating every mark as suspicious can damage legitimate writing. Applications should validate according to the languages and input they support, rather than assuming that the presence of marks signals abuse.
