When code and its tests share the same mistaken assumption, they can agree perfectly and still fail on real input. The fix is to test the claim where it matters: use at least one input the implementer did not create, and check compatibility at the boundary the project says it supports.

Why can every test pass when real input fails?

Tests built only from hand-written fixtures may show that the implementation behaves as those fixtures expect. They do not necessarily show that the fixtures represent the formats people actually provide. If the code and test data encode the same mistaken premise, passing tests confirm agreement—not correctness against real input.

A DEV Community article’s GitHub Issues example makes the distinction concrete. The parser author expected scope paths to appear one per bullet, and wrote fixtures in that format. Actual Issues instead put comma-separated paths on one line inside a fenced code block. The parser treated the whole line as one path, then discarded it because the line contained whitespace. The author reports that eleven Issues consequently failed with the same error: the scope section was present but declared no path. DEV Community article

Adding more fixtures made according to the same assumption would not have exposed the mismatch. The missing test was an example from outside the implementation author’s own expectations.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How do you test the format people actually use?

Add an independently sourced input

For any code that interprets external input, include at least one regression test based on an input the implementer did not create. The example article proposes retrieving real Issue bodies and preserving one as a fixture. A fixture like this gives future changes a concrete check against an observed format, rather than only against a format designed to fit the parser.

Keep the test focused on the meaningful behavior: provide the real-style scope line and assert that the parser recognizes the paths. That makes the discrepancy visible and prevents a return to the original failure.

Keep the source and context with the fixture

A real-world sample is useful only if its origin and relevant context remain understandable. Record where it came from and preserve the structure that matters to parsing, such as the fenced code block and comma-separated line. Avoid silently rewriting the sample into the format the implementation already expects; that would remove the evidence the regression test is meant to preserve.

How should you test a compatibility claim?

Test the boundary named by the claim. If a README promises support for a minimum runtime version, running CI only on a newer version does not establish that the minimum works. The neighboring article recounts a project that claimed Node 22.6 or newer but tested only Node 25. CI exposed the gap. Its author says Node 22.6 required a flag for type stripping, so the project changed its stated floor to Node 22.18 and suggested a matrix including Node 22.18 and 24. This is that project’s account, not an independently verified Node compatibility recommendation.

The general lesson is about matching evidence to the promise, not about which Node versions to support. A matrix should include the lowest version the project claims to support, alongside other versions the project chooses to cover. Testing a newer environment alone can leave the advertised lower boundary untested.

A practical check before trusting a green test suite

  • Identify the claim: What exact input format, behavior, or compatibility floor does the code promise?
  • Inspect how the fixtures were made: Could they simply repeat the implementation author’s assumptions?
  • Find a boundary example: Use an actual external input for parsers, or the stated minimum environment for a compatibility claim.
  • Preserve the counterexample: Add it as a regression test that fails if the mismatch returns.
  • Keep the claim and check aligned: If the supported boundary changes, update both the documentation and the CI coverage.

The article’s author summarizes the input-testing principle as: “Anything that interprets input gets one test with input you did not write.” Its compatibility principle is: “Verify at the boundary you claim. If it says ‘N or newer’, test on N.”

What this example does—and does not—show

The reported eleven failures describe one project incident, not a general estimate of how often parser tests miss real-world formats. The lesson is practical rather than statistical: author-created fixtures can share a blind spot with the code, and a test at a different boundary cannot prove a claim about the boundary that remains untested. Independent examples and correctly targeted checks help expose those gaps.
