You can configure the Codex surface in the ChatGPT desktop app to send supported model requests to Amazon Bedrock. This does not route ordinary ChatGPT Chat or Work conversations through Bedrock: OpenAI documents Bedrock as a Codex model-provider option, and says the OpenAI-hosted Responses API is not in the request path. The same Codex configuration approach applies to the CLI and IDE extension. Your AWS account controls Bedrock credentials, model access, Region, quotas, and billing; a ChatGPT subscription or OpenAI API key does not authenticate this setup. Before you configure Bedrock
Check the client, model, Region, and AWS access first. OpenAI’s Configure Codex with Amazon Bedrock guide specifies these minimum client versions:
- Codex CLI 0.128.0 or later.
- ChatGPT desktop app or VS Code extension 26.429.30905 or later.
Version requirements and model availability can change, so confirm them in the live guide before setup. You also need an AWS account with Bedrock access to a supported OpenAI model in a Region where that model is available. Model access and regional availability can differ by account.
Choose a Bedrock model and Region
OpenAI’s guide lists these Bedrock model IDs: openai.gpt-5.6-sol, openai.gpt-5.6-terra, openai.gpt-5.6-luna, openai.gpt-5.5, and openai.gpt-5.4. It identifies openai.gpt-5.6-sol as the recommended default in that guide. Confirm that your AWS account can use the exact model ID in your chosen Region before putting it in the configuration.

Configure Codex in config.toml
Open ~/.codex/config.toml and add or update the provider settings below. Replace us-west-2 with a Region where your account has access to the selected model; change the model value if you chose another supported ID.

Choose one authentication method
Use either a Bedrock API key or AWS SDK credentials. Do not set OPENAI_API_KEY for the Bedrock provider.
Bedrock API key
Set AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK to your Bedrock API key in the environment Codex can read, and configure the Region in config.toml. OpenAI’s guide says a Region is required for this authentication path.

AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK=<your-bedrock-api-key>AWS SDK credential chain
For IAM-signed requests, Codex can use the AWS SDK credential chain, which can resolve standard AWS credentials, AWS SSO, or a named profile. If you want Codex to use a named profile, uncomment and set profile in the configuration, using the profile name present in your AWS setup. Ensure the selected identity has the necessary Bedrock permissions.
Make credentials available to the desktop app
A desktop app may not inherit environment variables from a terminal session. If it cannot see the credentials or Region you configured, place the required variables—such as AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK and AWS_REGION—in ~/.codex/.env, following OpenAI’s setup guide. Keep the file private because it may contain a credential.

Restart Codex and verify the setup
- Save
~/.codex/config.tomland, if used,~/.codex/.env. - Restart the ChatGPT desktop app, VS Code extension, or CLI process so it reloads the local configuration and environment.
- Start a new Codex session. In the CLI, run
/statusto check the active configuration. OpenAI’s guide does not specify an equivalent desktop status command.
Fix common connection and access problems
- Codex does not recognize the provider or model: Confirm the client meets the minimum version and that
model_provideris exactlyamazon-bedrock. Check the model ID for typos. - Bedrock rejects the request: Verify the model is available to your account in the configured Region and that the AWS identity has model access and required permissions. Check quotas and credential validity in AWS.
- The desktop app cannot authenticate: Confirm the desktop environment can read the bearer token or AWS SDK credentials. For desktop-only environment issues, check
~/.codex/.env, then restart the app. - A named profile is not being used: Check that
profilematches the configured AWS profile name and that the profile is available to the process running Codex.
AWS handles Bedrock credentials, access, quotas, regional availability, billing, and service-side errors. OpenAI support is the appropriate contact for Codex client setup and local behavior.

This is a Codex provider configuration, not a generic setting for ChatGPT Chat or Work. Although AWS offers OpenAI-compatible APIs, compatibility does not guarantee identical features or behavior across APIs and models. AWS says the bedrock-runtime endpoint is recommended for most new applications; model API support differs, and AWS also documents bedrock-mantle with a different capability mix. See AWS’s Endpoints supported by Amazon Bedrock, API compatibility, and Amazon Bedrock quickstart. Those endpoint options do not replace Codex’s documented provider settings or mean you should paste a generic OpenAI base URL into the ChatGPT conversation surface.

OpenAI lists several features as unavailable in the Bedrock configuration: image generation, voice transcription for input, the cloud plugin store, cloud configuration and policies, and Codex cloud agents, including review, security, and web agents. Availability can vary with the model, Region, API surface, account setup, and AWS release status. Consult OpenAI’s Bedrock overview for the current feature list.
