OpenShift Container Platform 4.18 adds networking updates for traffic visibility, packet tracing, routing, and high-performance workloads. The headline changes include Open vSwitch (OVS) traffic sampling across supported network APIs, MetalLB BGP peer discovery with dynamicASN, and RDMA CNI configuration on SR-IOV. Some observability capabilities are documented for Network Observability Operator 1.8.0 and follow that operator’s independent release stream, while OVN-Kubernetes network event tracking is Technology Preview.
What’s new in OpenShift 4.18 networking?
The changes span several operational needs rather than a single new networking stack. The OpenShift Container Platform 4.18 release notes cover OVS sampling, routing configuration, SR-IOV and RDMA, bridge connectivity, and network attachment behavior. Separate Network Observability documentation for the 4.18 documentation set describes flow and capture tooling, including features documented for Network Observability Operator 1.8.0. Because the operator updates independently of OpenShift minor releases, check the installed operator version before relying on an operator feature.
| Area | What changes | Availability or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic visibility | OVS sampling exposes traffic for several network APIs; Network Observability adds flow enrichment and CLI improvements. | OVS sampling is in the OpenShift 4.18 release notes. Operator features are version-dependent. |
| Network events | Tracking for OVN-Kubernetes network policies, admin network policies, and egress firewalls. | Technology Preview. |
| BGP routing | MetalLB BGP peers gain dynamicASN for detecting the remote session’s autonomous system number. |
OpenShift 4.18 release-note item. |
| Performance and connectivity | RDMA CNI configuration on SR-IOV and Linux bridge interface use as an OVS default port connection. | OpenShift 4.18 release-note items; no specific hardware model is required by the described capability. |
| Multi-network operations | Multi-network policy support for IPVLAN and Bond CNI over SR-IOV, plus dynamic network attachment reconfiguration. | OpenShift 4.18 release-note items. |
| Flow matrix | A network-flow matrix for deployments in bare-metal and AWS environments. | Environment-specific; the notes identify bare metal and AWS. |
How do observability and packet tracing work?
Network Observability flows and captures
Network Observability’s packet translation (xlat) enrichment can expose translated endpoint information in flow data, including the backend pod serving a request. The 1.8.0 documentation also describes CLI improvements for metrics, flows, and packet captures:
- Capture metrics with filters.
- Run flow queries or packet captures in the background, then retrieve progress and logs.
- Enrich captures with machine, pod, and service subnet information.
- Filter using IP address, port, protocol, action, TCP flags, node selector, dropped traffic, or regular expressions.
These capabilities are documented in Network Observability Operator 1.8.0 material, not as a guarantee that every OpenShift 4.18 cluster has them. Verify the operator version installed in the cluster.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OVS traffic sampling
OpenShift 4.18 release notes identify OVS sampling as a packet-tracing aid. The documented network APIs include NetworkPolicy, AdminNetworkPolicy, BaselineNetworkPolicy, UserDefinedNetwork isolation, EgressFirewall, and multicast ACLs. The OVN-Kubernetes network plugin documentation describes using sampling alongside Network Observability Operator.
To use the documented OVN-Kubernetes sampling workflow, you need cluster-admin privileges, source and destination pods with traffic flowing between them, and at least one supported network API. Enabling the feature requires the TechPreviewNoUpgrade feature set. Follow the version-specific procedure in the OVN-Kubernetes documentation; enabling a feature set is a cluster-level change, not just a per-pod capture setting.

Network event tracking is Technology Preview
Network event tracking covers OVN-Kubernetes network policies, admin network policies, and egress firewalls. Red Hat labels the capability Technology Preview: its documentation says such capabilities are not covered by production SLAs, may not be functionally complete, and are not recommended for production use. Treat it as an evaluation feature rather than a production dependency.
What changed for routing and performance workloads?
MetalLB BGP peer discovery
The MetalLB BGP peer custom resource gains a dynamicASN field that detects the autonomous system number to use for the remote end of a BGP session. The release notes describe it as an alternative to explicitly setting spec.peerASN. This helps where the remote ASN should be discovered rather than entered as a fixed value.

RDMA on SR-IOV
The release notes describe configuring an RDMA CNI on SR-IOV for high-performance, low-latency communication between containers. This is relevant to workloads where container-to-container communication performance is a design requirement; it does not mean all workloads automatically use RDMA.
Linux bridge as an OVS default port connection
A Linux bridge interface can be used as the default port connection for OVS. This allows a network interface controller, such as a SmartNIC, to bridge the underlying network with the host. The release-note description does not mandate a specific hardware model.

Which features need extra planning?
- Technology Preview: Network event tracking is not recommended for production use under Red Hat’s stated Technology Preview terms.
- Feature-set change: The documented OVS sampling workflow requires enabling
TechPreviewNoUpgrade; confirm the consequences and procedure for your cluster before making the change. - Permissions and traffic: Sampling requires cluster-admin privileges and actual traffic between the selected source and destination pods, as well as a supported network API.
- Operator version: Network Observability functions documented for version 1.8.0 depend on the independently updated operator, not simply on running OpenShift 4.18.
- Deployment environment: The flow-matrix item applies to bare-metal and AWS environments as identified in the release notes; do not assume identical scope for other platforms.
What the networking expansion means for cluster teams
OpenShift 4.18’s networking story is a set of targeted capabilities: more ways to inspect traffic, a sampling path for tracing selected network API traffic, flexible BGP ASN handling, and support for performance-oriented networking configurations. Cluster teams should distinguish core release-note features from independently versioned Network Observability features, and should treat Technology Preview and feature-gated capabilities according to their documented maturity and operational requirements.
