Lowering Android’s three animation-scale settings can make menus and transitions finish sooner, so the phone may feel quicker to navigate. It does not make the processor faster or prove that apps compute faster. The settings are Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale.
What these settings change—and what they don’t
Developer Options is a built-in Android settings screen for configuring system behaviors, including tools to profile and debug app performance. Android’s guide says lower window and transition animation scales result in faster animation playback. In practice, reducing the scales shortens visible motion; it does not establish a phone-wide performance gain or fix an app that is slow to load or process work. Android Developers explains the settings and their behavior.
The three animation settings to adjust
| Setting | What it changes | How to choose a value |
|---|---|---|
| Window animation scale | The playback speed of window animations, such as a window appearing or disappearing. | Choose a lower available scale if you want the window motion to finish sooner; keep more animation if the shorter effect feels abrupt. |
| Transition animation scale | The playback speed of transitions between screens or activities. | Lower it to shorten those transitions, or leave it higher if you prefer more visible movement. |
| Animator duration scale | The duration of animator effects. | Try a lower available scale and judge whether the shorter effects feel better in everyday use. |
There is no universally best scale: the right setting depends on whether you value shorter transitions or more animation. Android’s documentation describes animation timing, not a measured improvement in processing speed or frame rate.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How to find and change the settings
- Enable Developer Options if needed. On Android 4.2 and higher, open the phone’s About section, find Build number, and tap it seven times. Follow any device prompts; the phone should confirm that developer options are enabled.
- Open Developer Options. The path varies by manufacturer. On Pixel phones, look under Settings > About phone; on Samsung Galaxy devices, the cited Android guide places Build number under Settings > About phone > Software information. If the menus differ, search Settings for “Build number” or “Developer options.”
- Find the animation scales. Search or scroll within Developer Options for Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale. Menu names, organization, and available values may vary by Android version and device maker.
- Lower the scales you want to change. Select a lower available value, then use the phone normally to see whether the shorter motion suits you. You can return to each setting and restore its previous value if you prefer the original pacing.
Why other Developer Options are not general speed switches
- Force GPU rendering forces GPU use for 2D drawing in apps that were not already using GPU rendering by default. That behavior does not establish a benefit for every app. Android’s Developer Options documentation describes it as a specific rendering control.
- Disable HW overlays turns off a system mechanism Android says lets apps use less processing power. It is not a blanket speed recommendation. Android documents the hardware-overlay option in the context of developer controls.
- Background process limit caps how many processes can run in the background at once. Android describes it as an app option, not a default consumer optimization. See Android’s explanation of background process limits.
